DOSBox Respin – antiX 17.5 – 32-bit – ONLY for old DOS games

antiX 17.5 core respin – only for ONE thing – to play old DOS games.

Rationale:

My oldest computers still ‘living’ are pretty much useless, except to do offline (i.e., NON-ONLINE) tasks.
The ‘regular’ antiX live USB works for ‘useful’ offline tasks… but what about the frivilous?

This USB boots DIRECTLY to DOSBox, you play your game(s), then you turn it off.
This is not meant to be installed – only run from USB stick.
This is not meant to use the internet.

I’ve included a small set of freeware DOS games, as proof-of-concept. Please add your own!
Just add your favorite games & edit the menu (or make something completely different).

Passwords are: demo/demo & root/root – just like default antiX. (But I can’t think of any reason you’d ever need to use them.)

This was imaged on a 1 GB USB drive, to make it small enough to fit on the majority of USB sticks out there.
If your stick is larger, gparted (from a regular antiX system) may be able to make it fill the rest of the drive.
It’s an ‘.img’ file – just “burn” it using Live USB Maker or dd. (For LUM, change the file search to “all files” instead of “ISO files”.)

It’s not made on a “read-only” file system, so using LUM in ‘dd mode’ will be fully writable like a normal antiX live USB. However, it WON’T work as a “full featured live usb” (LUM throws an error), but this USB _WILL BE_ “full featured,” using “dd mode.”

The way it’s set up, no persistence is needed. The games are kept on the /home/demo/Live-usb-storage/dos directory.
To add or remove games, just add them to the Live-usb-storage folder on the USB, from your “normal” system.
Adjust the menu, too, obviously. The pattern should be easy to follow.
If dosbox just doesn’t work (as I’ve configured it), adjust the settings in the ‘dosbox-0.74.conf’ file, also found in the /home/demo/Live-usb-storage/dos directory.

Again, this can all be easily done from your normal (antiX) system.

Maybe this is a good use for that too-old, too-weak, 32-bit computer that no longer has a working hard drive…

I downloaded it, used live-usb-maker to put it on a cheap usb2 stick and played tetris and sudoku.
Great fun.

Just a couple of points.

1. I had to remove the splash=v line in the boot menu for it to completely boot to dosbox
2. I wasn’t sure how to exit the tetris game. Q and Esc failed, then it hung.

I removed the splash=v parameter & am re-uploading. Hopefully that will be more compatible (mine works either way).
Regarding Tetris: haha. Yes. I came across that quitting issue, too. If you “lose on purpose,” it will give you the option to quit. 🙂

I also added 3 more games; Pacman, Spear of Destiny and Wolfenstein.
The first 2 work, but I haven’t got wolfenstein to open yet.

Hello Christophe.

This idea of yours is very good. Have you considered using an even older edition of antiX? Perhaps antiX 16 or 13, as the consumption of RAM memory will be even lower and the compatibility with older computers will be even greater.
You might be interested in the MS-DOS Applications and Games Launcher that PPC created.

I would very much like to have found antiX at the time of MEPIS and at the very beginning of antiX.

Esta sua ideia é muito boa. Você já pensou em utilizar uma edição ainda mais antiga do antiX? Talvez o antiX 16 ou o 13, pois o consumo de memória RAM será ainda menor e a compatibilidade com os computadores antigos será ainda maior.
Talvez você possa se interessar no Lançador de Aplicativos e Jogos do MS-DOS que o PPC criou.

Eu gostaria muito de ter encontrado o antiX na época do MEPIS e bem no início do antiX.
