      One other possibility:

If the system was abruptly turned off, such as an unexpected power blip or power failure, the file system may require a file system check and repair to remap inside values to the appropriate disk block.

, Maybe this was mentioned and I missed this point in the discussion; otherwise try doing a filesystem check on the partitions in question using fsck.

Looks like you DID perform fsck and it failed. This needs to be done in single user mode and the filesystem cannot be mounted. If it’s not even accessing the data when it’s NOT mounted then the association between the inodes and the file blocks have been compromised.

With health repair AND fsck complete, the data has been damaged, if those checks were properly performed, the final thing to see is whether the drive works at all.

        Last two things to try:

        1. Attempt to restore from backup.
        2. Force install another system in place of the previous one.

If neither work, then indeed there’s a hardware failure.

        Do these thoughts make sense?

[Remember that filesystem checks MUST be done when the drive is NOT mounted. IF it WAS mounted, attempting to write over it caused corruption.
Restoring or replacing MAY work IF the corruption was caused by the filesystem check when already mounted.
If that wasn’t the case, then there is at least one failed component, probably the SSD or removable drive.]

I ran through as many of the above suggestions as I could this morning.

ran smartctl -a /dev/sdc1 found errors, see listing

ran smartctl –health /dev/sdc1 found errors, see listing

ran fsck /dev/dc1 and /dev/sdc2 reports both clean

Disk manager can mount and unmount these volumes now but reports unknown devices on a subsequent attempt.

When I run Gparted it fails to list sdc1 and sdc2 among the available devices for action.

tripped up yet again trying to upload text files!

Following a cold reboot after the above checks device sdc no longer appears, but device sdd is now reported and mounted as sdc.

It looks as if the original device sdc is terminal now.

Hi roland, I am not sure if smart readout is affected when you add a partition
to the path. Correct is path and device only.

Please repeat the command just giving drive c

              sudo smartctl -a /dev/sdc

If you get the same warnings and errors you might try to update the drive firmware
              before further testing.

An update is available for the given serial number, see
              https://www.seagate.com/de/de/support/kb/barracuda-720012-firmware-update-213891en/

There is a freedos ISO available to download so no more absolute need for a windoze
              rechner.

Maybe useful: Just also found that there is a bootable/portable version of seagate seatools which can be used with a USB stick.
              https://www.seagate.com/de/de/support/downloads/seatools/

Or contact the seller giving him the readout and ask for replacement, he will probably
ask if the firmware has been updated..

I made bootable pen drives out of Barracuda12-ALL-CC49.iso and SeaToolsDOS112.ISO but was not able to get this pc to boot from either despite setting up the boot priorities in the bios as they were for the initial install. I did not have chance to try them on another pc, nor to try a known good iso pen drive on this pc.

Unfortunately I have to leave this problem due to sudden illness in the family, so thanks for all contributions. I’ll return to it when circumstances allow.

best wishes for your family probs!
When you’ll be back, I’ll ask you whether your pc is bios or efi 🙂

RE: Family problems: Praying for the best for all.

                    I’ve been facing similar issues:
                    1) My mother fell down several weeks ago, hit her head, and had some “brain bleeding” observed.
They found low blood pressure, which MAY have been an influence in her “fall”, sense of balance, and recovery.
She’s now in a “recovery treatment” to regain movement and the ability to get up, dress, move, and walk.
She can’t be released until she has at least some degree of mobility, but in essence, she has lost most of her independence.
My mother is in her middle nineties, so she has had a good, long life.

                    2) My in-laws have a similar situation. The husband of my sister in law’s mother also recently had a fall and was hospitalized; he’s now back home.

                    3) Several people from the area in which I grew up have recently passed away; several of them are younger than me; others were once active, vital members of our local community.

Aging does happen. I live in a Senior community myself, and there is rarely a month that goes by in which we avoid hearing ambulances or seeing notices of someone either getting hurt or passing away. On the other hand, many of these fine people have also lived relatively healthy lives for a good, long time. Nevertheless, it is a sad moment whenever we hear of a major hurt or a family loss. To anyone facing such things, my heart feels and senses pain, even though I don’t even know most people well; it’s still sad to witness pain and loss. Comfort and prayers to all either witnessing or experiences such loss. Such things supersede any efforts to experiment with elector-mechanical devices.

@roland @Brian Masinick, sorry to hear of the family health problems. I hope only the best for you both.

Yes, computer troubles hardly seem important in the whole scheme of things. All the best,

                      Seaken64

Yeah, just like our disk drives and our cars and computers, they age, we age, and over time we all “wear out”.
My Mom is actually doing better, from the standpoint of returning to a more “coherent state”, aware of things around her, speaking with the intelligence she’s had all her life, and physically looking better. She still, however, has at least a couple of weeks of physical therapy to return to anywhere near where she was a few months ago; due to her illness, she’s lost the ability to walk and care for herself, though the prognosis looks good for at least a short term improvement in these matters. The reality though is that she’s nearing the day of rest; we just don’t know when that will be.

Last summer we made it a point to visit her, which was a good thing. At that time, though she has a “walker”, back then she frequently picked it up and could balance on her own, which is no longer the case. Once she’s finished with rehab, we intend to visit once again; should her health take a sudden backward turn before then, we’ll drop what we’re doing and see her sooner.

We’ve had more than one person disappear from this place; I’m thankful for those who have departed and I continue to be thankful for those who have joined us. May we experience joy in whatever we do now, for none of us is assured of another day or another year; be kind and helpful, sharing good things, happiness and helpfulness while it’s still possible to do so!
