I’ve an old Asus laptop currently running AntiX. I’d like to install Dietpi on the same pc as a boot option. Can this be done and if so, how exactly? With some other distros there’s an automatic option at install to create a dual boot system, but AFIK not with AntiX.

::antiX uses grub, which checks for other installed OSes. So antiX does multiboot routinely. 🙂
BUT.
I was just reading on the dietpi site.
https://dietpi.com/docs/install/Dietpi erases the hdd when you install it. It takes over the whole thing.
So, the answer is (probably) “no,” unless you are willing to experiment on your own.
Maybe install dietpi FIRST, then use gparted from antiX live-usb to cut off a piece of the hdd, to install antiX. And the grub from antiX may be able to boot the dietpi. But OBVIOUSLY that’s an experimental thing. Don’t do that unless you like to experiment.
If you do that, you void the antiX money-back guarantee. 😉 😉
But seriously. It sounds like fun. If you do try it out, please let us know how it goes.

::Yes, it’s mainly for fun and out of curiousity that I ask. I discovered yesterday when I launched it from a live USB, that Dietpi 7.6 will overwrite the existing AntiX installation, so I didn’t do it. I didn’t realize AntiX looks for other installs. I will give your suggestion a try when I have some time, thanks.

::You can probably install DietPI first, then liveboot antiX and add/adjust partitions… then choose a different partition when installing antiX. Followup by booting to antiX and run grub update (aka ?grub-repair ?boot-repiar)

Re: Dual Boot on Old PC: AntiX + Dietpi?
Post by Joulinar » Mon Sep 27, 2021 11:10 pmprobably a question for AntiX on how to modify grub bootloader to allow a 2nd system. Basically DietPi is nothing else than a Debian. Means, you could use Debian netinstall and setup a plain Debian first. Once done, use our PREP script to install DietPi on top.
@rhizome, check this earlier topic in DietPi forum: Diet-Pi in Multi-Boot environment

::Thinking lateraly you could, should dietpi wreck the multiboot system on updating, as an alternative just run antiX from a
good USB stick or memory card. With an USB 2.1. port the boot is about as fast as internal ssd on my not exactlyThe post over at dietpie forum saying antiX is the problem with multiple boot rather than their installer,
cheeky to say the least.
Mixed antiX with all sorts of other systems on same disk as usual grub detects other OS or multiple OS and does its job.September 29, 2021 at 1:48 am #68031Anonymous
::@Moddit, FWIW, I didn’t read it as sassy/cheeky, and one of the DietPi developers posted a helpful followup today

Yes DietPi images always fill the whole drive as they include the bootloader. You can manually extract and flash the partitions only, but note that a grub update during first boot might override the bootloader again. So at best use the Automation_Custom_PreScript.sh (create it at first FAT partition) to purge the grub packages to prevent this. Note that there are some DietPi scripts trying to configure grub (console resolution in dietpi-config at least) which will then fail.If you install (and boot) DietPi first, do the same (purging grub packages) before installing AntiX or any other OS which includes and shall control the bootloader.

::Thanks Skidoo & ModdIt. For the moment, I’ve installed Rpi Desktop OS as it recognizes the existing AntiX installation. It required modifying the grub to show “=menu” on boot up” but works fine for either OS:)
However, when booting into AntiX, it takes longer (than before installation of Rpi Desktop OS) and I get the message briefly displayed after a 15-20 second blinking cursor: “gave up waiting for suspend/resume device” before it launches the login interface. Is there a fix for this? Not a major issue, but I like a fast boot 🙂
When I get time, I’ll try installing dietpi.September 29, 2021 at 2:57 pm #68072Anonymous

websearch query: debian “gave up waiting for suspend/resume device”(not a brush-off response. Several possible causes exist, you’ll need to investigate)

::Aah, good point, thx, shoulda searched first.
BTW, I can run a script to convert Rpi OS to Dietpi 🙂September 29, 2021 at 7:39 pm #68085Anonymous
::
If Rpi OS” means “Debian Buster with Raspberry Pi Desktop (released 11th 2021)“, a conversion might be feasible. Posting to the DietPi should land you a definitive answer.

by Joulinar » Thu Dec 17, 2020DietPi is not an own Operating System or Distribution. DietPi is a bundle of scripts on top of a standard Debian [net.iso/mini] installation. Means the whole software update process is done the same way as on all other Debian distribution. Basically you could turn a normal Debian into a DietPi by just running 1 script. Depending on your SBC, DietPi is using different base images. Mainly used images are Armbian, Meveric or for PRi boards Raspberry OS.
