I, like most people, am flat broke, even so I like watching videos on Youtube (for free) and even, now and then, Netflix (with a friend that has an account).

Although I like watching Youtube without commercials in Smtube, sometimes I miss the continuous roll of related videos the default interface provides… And my netbook is too crappy to use Firefox to play Youtube in a decent way.
      Enter “ElectronPlayer” (https://github.com/oscartbeaumont/ElectronPlayer )
It looks like a simple Youtube player app, just like most phones have, No web address to deal with, just the site’s Window. On my low specs netbook, the 360dpi videos stream just right, smoother than in Firefox (and start faster than in Smtube)- I get the full Youtube experience (adds and all).
But ElectronPlayer is, by default configured to allow you to access the most used (paid) streaming sites in the World, like Netflix and Disney+, selectable from the main menu… We tested Netflix on my single core, 1gb of RAM netbook, and gess what? It played incredibly well (the non HD Netflix version my friend springs for). It does take a few moments to start streaming, but it’s smooth sailing from then on – nothing to configure, just click the logo of the streaming service you want to use, from the main menu (of course initially you have to enter your account’s credentials) and you’r set.

The only cons? ElectronPLayer is packaged in .appimage format only, and it’s 64bits only. and, I guess you figured it out by it’s name, it’s an Electron wrapper around the streaming site’s…

Thank you PPC for highlighting this app… Out of curiosity I just installed it (appimage) and am trying to test it…
        My first impressions:
        – It starts up playing rather quickly as you mentioned, without delay such in SMTube. No video URL’s. Seems to play rather well.
        – It is playing in rather small window on my screen, likely due to 360 dpi only. I have been looking where to change to something like 720 but do not see this yet. This comes as a disadvantage to SMTube, which can play through mpv (and without adds, method which you posted in the past).

So comparing to SMTube, what are the actual advantages of ElectronPlayer for Youtube except being able to offer related videos and being able to play on lower powered machines, which is an advantage versus Firefox… My limited understanding is that the main purpose of ElectronPlayer is serving as a player for Netflix (etc.) otherwise missing for Linux environment…

@olsztyn – this app’s main feature is, in fact, the aggregation of Streaming services.
Smtube displays a webpage that shows youtube videos and then opens those videos on a media player – on older devices, media players, that use less system resources than a modern web browser, are able to play videos much smoother. The only downside is that it takes some moments to begin loading the video that is displayed in the media player window. Since ElectronPlayer is basically a mini chromium browser with DRM extensions included, it starts to display the streamed video a bit faster (since it does not have to start downloading it).
Also, using EP, you can log on to your Youtube account and follow the channels you subscribe to, etc, without any fear of also being logged to google services in your real web browser (you can also access Youtube’s page directly from Smtube, but it’s less straightforward to open a video on a media player if you do that).
For some reason both Youtube and Netflix play much smoother in EP than in Firefox…

If all you want are the “related” videos then try this.

“pipe-viewer is a lightweight, but yet feature packed application for browsing and watching videos from YouTube.”
