Go to the Control Centre from the main antiX menu >> desktop tab >> Preferred Applications and Click the button.

You should see the familiar list of your default programs for each option, but now, you should also see the program name (translated if your screen is not in English). When you use the pulldown for an application, the reasonable choices for that application should be shown based on the Categories entry and possibly MimeType entries in the .desktop files.

If you find any problem with the program or translations, please let me know.

      # Categories = Values in .desktop files used to select. Any entries including NoDefault will be excluded
      # Terminal – TerminalEmulator (excluding root entries thanks to PPC)
      # Web Browser – WebBrowser
      # File Manager – FileManager
      # Email Client – Email
      # Text Editor – TextEditor
      # Image Viewer – Graphics Viewer (must include MimeType image if any)
      # Video Player – Video Player (must include MimeType video if any)
      # Audio Player – Audio Player (must include MimeType audio if any)

Credits: Dave for the original code, Marceocripe and Robin for translations and testing, and PPC for borrowed translation code, as well as anticapitalista for getting it implemented with all the desktop changes that drive it.

Hi Bob! I just tested the app, after updating one of my antiX 21 boxes- it seems to work great! I have only 2 minor “complaints”:

-In the old version, the names of the available Application Categories (Terminal, Web Browser, File Manager, etc) where perfectly localized to pt_pt- now, they come up in English… Can the old pt-pt localization file be used? Do I need to adapt it and send it over to you? I just noticed it what up for localization on transifex, but I’ve been a bit more off line than usual… So I did not help to localize it…
-In the “File Manager” options list “rox-filer” does not come up- if you want I can try to tweak your script and add it to the File Manager’s list “by hand”… Having rox on the list can by handy for people wanting to use a non “rox-…” desktop but still wanting to use rox-filer as their FM…

Great job, Bob, as always! It makes antiX even easier to use (and specially for the people than need it the most, newbies that know nothing about .desktop files)

        P.

There were no changes to the translated texts in the program, but because the line numbers changed, the translations need to be made to match up. I don’t really understand the details, but Marcelocripe or Robin would. I think the results of that need to get to the repos.

The Rox-filer should appear automatically (along with any other FileManager desktop files) if you have the latest rox-filer.desktop file which included FileManager; on the Categories line.

PS: the FileManager; entry got left off the categories line in rox-filer.desktop, so I’ll email anticapitalista to see if he can fix it, thanks

            PPC, desktop-defaults-set translate in Transifex.

              Dear developers,

              What is going on?
Everything is in English for fr_BE!
It’s the same for the applications, they are all in English.

              Best regards,
              Wallon

Its my fault, the translations had to be recalculated due to the line number changes. The words are the same, but on different lines, and I didn’t understand that would cause the picture you posted above.

Anyway, that did not get sent to anticapitalista with the code, and so that did not make it to the repos yet.

Which version implements these changes (and how would I check what I have installed)? I ran the antiX-updater from Control Centre today and my system is up to date, but SeaMonkey, which I have added to antiX-22 386 full does not show up as an option under Web Browser. The .desktop file seems to have text/html among the MimeTypes and Categories=Application:Network:Email

                  Categories=Application;Network;Email;
                  MimeType=text/html;text/xml;application/xhtml+xml;application/xml;application/vnd.mozilla.xul+xml;application/rss+xml;application/rdf+xml;x-scheme-handler/mailto;x-scheme-handler/http;x-scheme-handler/https;x-scheme-handler/ftp;

Robin’s latest includes the fix you need.

I have what is perhaps a naive question.
When exploring this topic I noticed that the usr/share/applications directory has an antix sub-directory and only the items in the sub-directory are offered in the options for preferred applications.
What determines if a .desktop file appears in the antix sub-directory?
Can I just move a .desktop file into the sub-directory so that it appears in the preferred applications options or is there a neater / more correct way of doing this?

hugh, it could be in either, or your personal folder, ~/.local/share/applications

Make a copy of the .desktop file that you expected to appear in ~/.local/share/applications, and post another copy of it here renamed .txt so the forum website will allow it to post here, and tell us what application your were expecting to see it under.

I knew I wasn’t thinking straight. I do have access to all the .desktop files. Sorry for wasting your time…
