      I have an 64GB exfat formatted microSD card to collect data for my wildlife camera. However, when inserted
      into the USB-2 ports on my Asus laptop, it is not recognized by antiX 21, as it does not show under either the file
      (PCMan) or partition (gparted) managers.

      I should mention that the microSD is not corrupted, as it is recognised by another laptop (Lenovo), running an
      Ubuntu-based distro, that has USB-3 ports.

      Is the failure to recognize the exfat SD card down to an issue of USB-3 vs. USB-2, or some missing software in
      antiX 21?

      Many thanks in advance for your help.

        Not an expert, but exfat support is not included in my vanilla install. Have you checked or installed such support? The package is available in Synaptic, or you can try:

        sudo apt install exfat-fuse exfat-utils

            @punranger
            Thank you for your suggestion. However, the software you indicated is already installed, i.e:

            dpkg --list exfat*
            Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
            | Status=Not/Inst/Conf-files/Unpacked/halF-conf/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend
            |/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
            ||/ Name           Version      Architecture Description
            +++-==============-============-============-==================================>
            ii exfat-fuse 1.3.0-2 amd64 read and write exFAT driver for FU>
            ii exfat-utils 1.3.0-2 amd64 utilities to create, check, label >
            un exfatprogs <none> <none> (no description available)

            Needless to say, I still get the notification shown below. I then went a bit further
            in trying to solve this. I dual-booted my present install of antiX21 with LXLE Focal (based
            on Ubuntu 20.04.04) – the SD card doesn’t show any mounting error on LXLE, its files being readily
            accessible. The only difference in the exfat-fuse and exfat-utils installed on LXLE is
            that it has version 1.3.0-1, instead of 1.3.0-2 in antiX21.

                Try the 5.10 kernel

                Thanks anticapitalista for this idea, which I followed, but found that my 14-year-old Asus laptop (2008) wouldn’t boot with 5.10,
                after installing the antiX version of 5.10 64bit from cli-aptiX.

                LXLE Focal comes with kernel 5.4 by default (which does boot on my Asus) and, as I said above, the SD card works with LXLE,
                though obviously It would be good to get it working with antiX.

                Any more ideas/comments greatly welcomed …

                  Hi mikey777,

                  I’m using antiX 19.2 ans I mount my external exfat disk using disk manager ( available into the control center).

                  In antiX 21 I do not see it. It is available in the MX repositories.

                  Hope this can help.

                  Regards

                      This might be important when I formatted the microSD with exfat: it was formatted using the formatting setting in my wildlife camera, not in Linux (antiX).
                      I did wonder about this as the microSD card’s UUID has only 8 digits – is this normal?

                      The UUID of the microSD card is represented by /dev/sdc1 in the terminal output below:

                      $ sudo blkid
                      /dev/sda1: LABEL="root-antiX21" UUID="5be186e2-1238-44c6-81e8-ef635ca05595" BLOCK_SIZE="4096" TYPE="ext4" PARTUUID="24eeb1fe-01"

                          Thanks iznit, for your offer of help. I tried what you suggested, adding exfat to the allowed_types list, but
                          unfortunately it didn’t fix the problem. I should mention that the kernel I’m using is 4.9, as anticapitalista mentioned kernel.

                              Maybe the way the camera is formatting the device isn’t normal?

                              Try formatting the device with the PC under antiX Linux. Copy some files to it and see if you can red them back. If that works, then try putting it in the camera and adding files to it. Shut it down and try it in the PC again to see if the files are readable.

                                If you can re-format as exfat in LXLE or Windows, then give BobC’s idea a try. I think there’s a good chance the camera will work with fat32 as well. (But make sure you can redo exfat formatting, just in case.)

                                  Try this (for kernel-version, just type the 4 and it should auto-complete)

                                  sudo dkms autoinstall -m exfat-dkms -k <kernel-version>
