      Hi,

Recently I entered this world of linux (yes, I am still a noob) and some time later I found out light distributions for old computers, (I have a Toshiba NB55D) which has 1g of ram and a 2-core processor at 1ghz, and I discovered antix, but what I want to install is antix with LXDE, that is the reason why antix-net.

Now, trying to install it and marking “y” when it asks me if I am running Antix-net, the following appears:

      Reading package lists...Done
W:Failed to fetch http://mirror.cedia.org.ec/mx-workspace/antix/buster/dists/buster/InRelease Temporary failure resolving 'mirror.cedia.org.ec'
W:Failed to fetch http//deb.debian.org/debian/dists/buster-backports/InRelease Temporary gailure resolving 'deb.debian.org'
W:Failed to fetch http://ftp.br.debian.org/debian/deists/buster-updates/InRealease Temporary failure resolving ''ftp.br.debian.org'
W:Failed to fetch http://ftp.br.debian.org/debian/deists/buster/InRealease Temporary failure resolving ''ftp.br.debian.org'
W:Failed to fetch http://security.debian.org/dists/buster/updates/InRelease Temporary failure resolving 'securiry.debian.org'
W:Some index files failed to dowload. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

I’m following some tutorials and they do download all those files. On the other hand, the first time I tried to “install” it, I ignored said problem, and when I finished and restarted the pc without the usb where I have the antix iso, nothing appeared. I don’t know if it is due to the problem specified above. In case something, I am connected to my router via an Ethernet cable, could it be that the fault is there, that I am not really connected to the internet as specified by antix before installing it? And if this is the case, how do I check if I don’t have anything installed on the pc?

Hope someone can please advise how to resolve this so I can get antiX running on this old laptop.

      Thank you for your help.

You could have started with antiX 19.3 core, that has drivers/firmware for wireless, but this doesn’t matter right now (as the error would be the same).

Note: If you log in as “demo”, use sudo where I use it. If logged as “root”, don’t use sudo, I think).

If you were using antiX core, I would recommend you check with ceni if your ethernet connection is set up.
        sudo ceni
Select Ethernet and see if it connects properly.

As you are using antiX net (which I have very little experience with, and that has almost nothing I know how to work with), I think everything is even more difficult.
try to see what interfaces are available
        ifquery --list
You should be able to see eth0 (or whatever name the ethernet interface has) there.
Now try connecting to it with
        sudo ifup eth0
Where you need to substitute “eth0” for the correct interface name you saw in the ifquery list output
It should tell you if you get connected or not.

You cannot ping to check if internet is working, you cannot wget ether, so hopefully sudo apt update gives you now the correct output and no errors.

I will keep investigating, but meanwhile try to do what I listed above.

Edit: The only alternative I found (I am not knowledgeable in net, as I stated before) is to use a whois command
        whois google.com
It it outputs a correct message (and not “No whois server”), then internet works.
The next step would be to edit the /etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian.list to default debian sources. For example:
        sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian.list
and edit the two active (blue) entries to:

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian buster main contrib non-free
        deb http://security.debian.org/ buster/updates main contrib non-free

and the antix.list to defaults with:
        sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list.d/antix.list
and edit the only active (blue) entry to:
deb http://la.mxrepo.com/antix/buster buster main nonfree nosystemd
Save with Control+O and exit with Control+X
Run again the apt update and see if it works
        sudo apt update

Hopefully someone with more experience explains what is going on with antiX net.

          Hi Xecure,

Thanks for your time. I’m going to review and try everything you told me.

Your Internet connection didn’t work (for some reason).
Boot live antiX-net, login as root (password root) and do apt-get update.
            Does Internet work?
If it doesn’t it could be due to your network not being found (unlikely) or the repo used is down or unreliable.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

Hello everyone, thanks for your help.

I already did, Xecure said and immediately executed the command that anticapitalista mentioned. But I still get the same error. I think that in the end it will make the pc not recognize the connection as the anticapitalista said. I am attaching a screenshot of what I get on the screen.

Well they did not want to upload the images. However the error is the same as above only with the repositories Xecure mentioned.

Try to see if you get something different with antiX 19.3 core instead of net. It is also no-gui, but brings a few terminal applications (like ceni) that help with connecting (even ethernet connection).

antiX net is for real experts on linux. Core is a bit easier.

The instructions yo are following will also work with antiX core, so give it a try. you only need to check ethernet connection with ceni and that should work out on its own.

                    Hello everyone,

I found the “error”. I gave to enter the BIOS and it turns out that the “Built-in LAN” option was disabled, so I enabled it and tried the command

                    apt-get update

And it already worked. Thank you all for your help and your time !!

Yes, with the NET version it’s all about making sure you have a good internet connection before anything else. I’ve used the Debian NET version and it is similar.

But I don’t think you have to worry about starting from scratch if you don’t want to. If you have enough hard drive space you can add LXDE to the standard FULL antiX version.
