      Hi,
how to set file manager from screen shot?
This one appears when a location for savings sth must be chosen.
Looks different from my current fm.

This manager and some parts of the system, like buttons for exit sessions(screenshot), have different style from the one is chosen for the system. Is it possible to set it for everything?

Go to antiX control centre > desktop > preferred applications.

Change the file manager shortcut to be zzzfm.desktop. The default is desktop-defaults-follow-fm.desktop. The zzzfm.desktop file is in one folder/directory up from the default one.

I hope that’s clear enough to follow. 🙂

Thank you for the response 🙂
          It is clear.

Still after setting zzzfm.desktop file manager does not look like the one from “select file” (it is on your screen with choosing zzzfm as fm).
I prepared new live installation and also did not get desired look on clean system…

For me it looks like that there is some hidden fm that appears only when one tries to save sth and cannot be easily set.
It looks different as it has different layout and icons…
Some parts of the system has independent style/look (maybe thanks to a library used for these apps) – mentioned folder chooser or buttons to close/logout and so on…

Not a hidden file manager. “File Chooser” is not even a full file manager. It is a component of gtk or Qt….. or depending on which program, it might even be a java component. Basically, we do not have a “One Ring To Rule Them all” no single place to apply a style [[[fonts and colors]]] to govern all programs.

If you install a full “desktop environment” [[[mate, or kde or cinnamon…..]]] AND you stick to using only programs installed as part of that desktop environment, then you can have a “One Ring”.

This one appears when a location for savings sth must be chosen.

Another week, another user with a question that I never ever thought about asking…

As previous stated, what you get when you use the “file picker” from antiX’s window manager’s is not a part of any “hidden file manager”- it’s simply a window that allows you to pick what file to load or where to save a file- it does not allow you to manage your file (copy, move or delete them).
But zzzfm/spacefm file managers can be configured to have a very similar look and feel to that window… The ft10-transformation package includes a script that reconfigures zzzfm so it has the bookmarks most people are used to (documents, images, music, downloads, etc) with familiar icons.

antiX does not include, out of the box a file picker that is just like the default file manager, because antiX, for the sake of less resource usage, does not use a Desktop Environment, that includes, from scratch every single detail that makes up the OS “front end” (the file manager, the file picker, the window manager, the log in manager, etc).
antiX’s “Desktop” is created from a patchwork of carefully selected applications, to provide the fastest, lightest, yet full functional system possible.

So, short answer to your question: you can’t set as default the same file manager used in the file picker window, because, well, it’s not a file manager, it’s just a window that displays paths and/or files (to help you save or load a file).
What you can do is configuring the file managers that come with antiX to look similar to what you get in that window or install any other file manager that you like…

              P.

For many people the “antiX way” is difficult to understand because the user is familiar only with using a distribution that uses a “Desktop Environment”, such as XFCE or KDE, etc. antiX does not work that way. It uses a technique where tools are gathered into a “Desktop” from non-uniform sources and these sources are not “curated” by a team that is focused on a “Desktop Environment”. Yet these sources are complimentary in that they are chosen to achieve a reasonable result without unnecessarily using precious and limited system resources.

The sacrifice to this “antiX way” is that there is no complete uniformity between the different tools chosen for the “Desktop” session. However, the user can manipulate the visual and action results by choosing alternate tools and create their own “theme” to meet their own preferred aesthetic or work habits. In a “Desktop Environment” these “themes” are curated by the developers of that “Environment”. This is also true of antiX in that the look and feel has been selected by the developers into various “Desktops” that can be chosen at will from a menu of said choices. The difference is that the tools used in each “desktop” are not always configurable with exactly the same theme. This allows for using tools that are more precise in action although they may be less configurable to a particular theme.

With a little effort a user may achieve results that are very close to a themed Desktop Environment. But in the “antiX way” this is primarily the responsibility of the user and not curated entirely by the antiX developers. antiX does tend to be more concerned with use of resources and doing the job needing to be done rather than presenting everything with a uniform “theme” and with a pleasant, and subjective, level of eye-candy. There is nothing inherently wrong with eye-candy and a subjectively pleasant theme but it is not the focus of antiX which is more concerned with productivity and getting results without needing a huge amount of resources. The “antiX way” is my personal preference.

Where is this “file picker” script? Whats its called? I cant find anything in /usr/local/bin.

                  How is the script triggered?

You can right-click and have folders shown first, followed by files. That makes it easier to use, in my opinion.

its not a script, it is a component

another component, seen less frequent in antiX because few Qt programs are preinstalled

And this is part of the secret what makes antiX that fast and stable on even week machines. Instead of running heavy and resource wasting full »desktop environments« with all their hidden background tasks and services, this is built up by a very sophisticated and well thought out selection of single components, only using the amount of resources actually needed to run something properly. (Fast machines profit from this strategy also, not wasting a good pint of their power for pointless OS internal management tasks like a bloated public or enterprise administration)

Windows is like a submarine. Open a window and serious problems will start.

Completely off-topic, but antiX already has officially available the ft10 transformation pack, that I think really is as close as possible to have a “Desktop Environment” without installing any D.E., just by adding a few apps and scripts to any of the 3 default Floating Window Managers. If you select a W.M. theme and a matching GTK theme, you’ll get an almost perfectly uniform looking System (for example, I use FT10, with DarK Grey as main background color, Fluxbox with a “Numix” Style, and arc Dark for Window Gadgets).
And, like I said in my previous post- and more related to O.P.- FT10 allows you to get zzzfm to look and feel a lot more like the File Managers included in D.E.’s (complete with Bookmarks and Trash can)

Edit: I just uploaded a screen grab showing zzzfm on the left and geany’s “file picker” window on the right… As you can see, they are pretty similar…

PPC Thank you for your answer.

Using one component for showing the same kind of data is not very weird so assumption, that there could be another file manager that has the same view like file picker is for me quite natural.
