Currently antiX includes two file managers: SpaceFM and RoxFiler. As much as they are a reasonable choice for a minimal antiX implementation a significant deficiency of these is that they are not capable of seeing network data.
In trying to replace with another file manager it appears that Thunar might be a reasonable resolution of this deficiency, however upon installing Thunar in antiX it fails on network data with message ‘Failed to open “/ on”, operation not supported. Googling it appears it needs installing a few gvfs files as well, among which gvfs-smb, however such gvfs-smb appears to be missing from antiX repositories.
Any help or suggestion will be greatly appreciated…
      Thanks and Regards…

        look for gvfs-backends instead.

This package contains the afc, afp, archive, cdda, dav, dnssd, ftp, gphoto2, http, mtp, network, sftp, smb and smb-browse backends.

I did do it beforehand. However gvfs-backends did not resolve this problem though.
I think I installed all gvfs files I found as recommended from searching web on the error Failed to open “/ on”, except gvfs-smb, which seems missing from antiX repositories. I do not know for sure if this missing file will resolve this issue though as there might be something else missing that prevents Thunar seeing network in antiX.
          Thanks again…

Would pcmanfm work for you? I have no previous experience with network shares, so I am not sure what to recommend.
It is possible that you need to launch Thunar with dbus support, as this user went thorugh to get mounting in pcmanfm:

pcmanfm does have network access. You find network access on the Go menu.

                Would pcmanfm work for you?

Reading the post on pcmanfm I think it was about accessing media such as USB. I have no such problem that would fall into this category. The only thing on top of SpaceFM I do need is capability of seeing network data -SMB shares, which seems unrelated. Perhaps underlying conditions are similar but I do not think so, as I have no problem addressing SMB network data via Connectshares, after which such network share does show in SpaceFM. It is just that SpaceFM is not capable of seeing network data by itself, like other file managers such as Thunar or Nautilus.
So my intent was to try Thunar as possibly lighter than Nautilus as file manager. However strangely I cannot seem to make it work in antiX although reportedly it works fine in MX. I believe if it works in MX it must be possible to make it work in antiX, which would be another step to bring antiX to the same level as mainstream Linux distros.

Thank you. Just installed, although do not see it in any menu. Will try to remaster my Frugal install and reboot. Or perhaps remove Thunar first, should there be some conflict…
Edit. See it now. Will try network capabilities in more depth but at first glance it seems I am getting on Go > network message ‘Operation not supported. I will revisit the thread Xecure recommended for any clues.
But in any case it does not seem full fledged network support the way Thunar does.
                  Thanks again…

I am able to access all my shares in SpaceFM, Roxfiler, and MC. I’m not sure why you can’t see your shares but it is not an antiX problem. I also can access my FTP server.

You can mount your shares in your startup scripts.

IIRC, in spacefm you will need to edit udevil.conf to enable it (I have a set in fstab for shares when needed)
I think this is set by right clicking the devices pane and going into the root submenu.

                          Edit:

I do not know if you need keith’s plugin, I think you can load a network share via smb:// or nfs:// in the url bar

Yes. As I mentioned in one of my posts above currently I do access SMB shares through SpaceFM as well but only after running Connectshares. The only deficiency is that these file managers do not have the capability of network shares detection themselves as e.g. Thunar does.

This would be great. I was not aware of this capability. Not exactly detection and browsing of network shares by file manager as e.g. Thunar or Nautilus but good to know network shares can be at least addressed from SpaceFM this way.
So if such access of shares can be done by SpaceFM then running Connectshares beforehand would not be needed in antiX after all, it seems…

I confirm that SpaceFM has access to network shares. At least in antiX 19.2 full, SpaceFM can do this just from the box, without any additional settings and using of Connectshares. I tried smb://<server>/<share> and nfs://<server>/<share> in the url (path) bar, and both protocols worked fine.
