So, here I am with my first AntiX installation running.
      Why AntiX? Totally by chance.
Being retired, I offer my help to a local charity. They have an help desk for people in trouble with internet bureaucracy. You know, nowadays the public administration mostly runs on internet, and many people, older ones or just not skilled, are not able to use smartphones or PC. To make it short this help desk needs a second working place with a second PC, and I decided to use an old old one I had on my shelf, equipped with a slow WinXP. Of course, I decided that it was a perfect situation to switch to Linux, maybe a light version. First attempt with Lubuntu. Ok the live version, but after install it didn’t start. Why so? Don’t know, I decided to just try a different distro, and googling around I found AntiX, that succeded at first attempt, that’s why.
Guess what? When the PC was almost ready, with Italian Libreoffice, the PC just died. Totally died, not even the green battery led. Made a voltage check with the tester on the power plug, and 20V is proudly there, but….
Ok, let’s try with another old PC.
Guys, AntiX is a charm! Easy and fast install, fast running!
Had some trouble with Teamviewer, fast install (it’s on the repo!) but no communication. Opens with no ID and no PWD, just a dash. And never connects to another PC.
Why so? No time and no will to investigate, let me try with Adydesk.
Hm, no available on the repo! Ok, download the DEB file and install it.
WOW! It works! And it’s fast!
So, thank you all for your welcome and your words.
So far the PC is ready for delivery, I still could investigate on the reason why TV doesn’t start up with ID and PWD and doesn’t connect, but not today.

I have taken several old machines and extended their lifetime by installing antiX. Sometimes because I needed a machine for something special, but sometimes just for the fun of it. But it warms my heart to see stories like this, where “obsolete” technology is put to use for the common good. I wish you all the best in using antiX. No doubt you will run into some problems. As always, when asking questions here: search old forum posts, and include system info by using the inxi command or getting system info in the control center. Buona fortuna!

          Dear salvuzzo,
I agree with your results: according to my opinion antiX now in by far the best (may be the unique) complete distro for old to very old pc/mac.

If you prepare old pc for other people, please take into account the possibility to install PPC’s ft10, that you can find in antiX repositories or in “Installatore softwares”. I did it in almost all the cases in which I prepared old pc(s) for windows refugees and the final users appreciated very much.

I had also recovered some 32 bit pc > 15 years old: in this case the used ram when idle after the boot is <90 Mb!

          Enjoy your antiX

Thanks Madibi. I installed FT10 and, yes, it seems to be easier for people used to w10 and similar. I don’t think I’ll use for myself, because I’m keen with the original AntiX default desktop (blue ice?) where I installed the wonderful metro background coming from Antix17.

Just a question: on FT10 there is the Wtrr program that shows weather related to Piemonte region, whilst I live in Lombardia. How to modify the location? I didn’t find anything on Google. Maybe should I ask to ChatGPT 😀 😀 😀

            Thanks again

The best answer can be given by @PPC
What I’ve just discovered is that if I write in chrome’s address bar “wttr.in”, I get the weather from Vinovo and that’s very good for me because I live in Torino.
So I tried to write “wttr.in/Milan” and I got the Milan’s weather.
Now your job should be to find where to write that localisation 🙂

                Good luck

                    What should work.
Open the script of the weather app with
                    sudo geany /usr/local/bin/antix-weather.sh

Now change in the first long line

                    geoip="$(wget -O- -q http://geoip.ubuntu.com/lookup)" ; area="$(sed -r 's/.*<RegionName>(.*?)<\/RegionName>.*/\1/g' <<< $geoip)"; corrected_area=$(echo "${area// /_}"); langu=$(locale | grep LANG | cut -d= -f2 | cut -d. -f1); l1=$(echo $langu |cut -d_ -f1); WINID=$(wmctrl -lx | grep 'Wtrr.in' | awk 'NR==1{print $1}'); if [ $WINID ]; then wmctrl -ia $WINID & else roxterm --hide-menubar --title "Wtrr.in" --zoom=0,85 --geometry 130x40 -e bash -c "curl 'http://wttr.in/Lombardia'; read -N1;" & fi

the last part like shown above to Lombardia.

Hmm, is there really heavy snow tonight in Mailand?
