The old laptop I use antiX on has developed the habit to go dark from time to time, as in, 10% or so screen brightness.

So I had the idea to put the buttons (FN)<F9> and (FN)<F10> to work but so far I found no way to do it on the installed system (antix-17).

The buttons also don’t work under any KNOPPIX I have (debian-based, tries to avoid systemd), not even the newest, not under the old Debian and some other old Debian-based distributions, but I found that they work under Artix OOTB and also -surprise- they work under the newest MX. But not the newest antiX-19b2. All of these booted from CD/DVD.

Now what? I noticed that the ones where these buttons work have systemd in it (not sure to what extend systemd is used on MX) but if that’s the only way to get it to work, I’m going to scream!

Help, please? ó_ò What can I do? The laptop is an HP EliteBook 8730 if that’s of use.

Do you have xbacklight install ? on antiX

          Thank you!
I tried xbacklight some time ago and it failed. Then I found the reason for the failure on the Arch Wiki: It needs Intel graphics and my laptop has NVIDIA graphics. (Btw., I think I managed to set the backlight value by hand at some point by writing an integer value into some file but if the backlight is (nearly) off I can’t see what I type so that’s not a real option and I didn’t investigate that direction any further.)

My actual state of belief is that these buttons are supported by means of the BIOS and all that would be needed is letting these keypresses through or forwarding them to the BIOS.

An update – meanwhile I found some more distributions where these (FN)-Buttons work, one of them being Redcore, based on Gentoo and using OpenRC or sysv-init. So it’s not systemd.
The common factor seems to be LXQT.
So I tried to install LXQT on antiX, the installation succeded but then I was told that LXQT is not supported, I could not select it as a window manager.
What is needed to do this, or is it not possible at all?

Hi tlaloc77, I can’t help you with lxqt,
but did you already try to add kernel-parameters to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX-line in /etc/default/grub, like

              acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor

              on antiX ?

I use a tool called ‘light’ not xbacklight in bspwm. Here are the keyboard shortcuts I use: XF86MonBrightnessUp light -A 10 –or— XF86MonBrightnessDown light -U 10

                Details are here: https://github.com/haikarainen/light

                I hope this helps.

                  Running antiX 17.2 with i3 on T430 Lenovo I have xbacklight 1.2.1.1+b2 and backlight is working fine. Fn+F8 & Fn+F9 (non-systemd)

I also run Debian 10 on the same machine after installing xbacklight 1.2.1.1+b2 backlight is working fine here too.. (systemd)

It is the same story with my Lenovo X220 working with both antiX & Debian..

Thank you, but xbacklight is by now known to not work and the reason why it’s not working is also known. No point in trying further.

It might – ‘light’ looks promising – thank you very much, I try this later. Just wanted to say that I had a look at url and read some about it.

Yes, while trying to get xbacklight to do something, also “acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=” (nothing behind the “=”, this was also suggested somewhere). Meanwhile I forgot whether this was a tweak for xbacklight or something standalone. Anyway, no success with it. It might be worth trying with ‘light’, so thanks for reminding me.

                      Did you try adding:

                      acpi_backlight=native

                      on the kernel command line?

                      I found other options here…

                      https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Backlight

Also, maybe running nvidia drivers might help, but I would be careful making that change because I have had problems removing that once installed on other systems.

I just don’t know why it is not work for you as you have all the right components. I only have intel on my laptops.
Have you tried updating the bios according to HP Updates F20 Dec7,2011 3.5mb
Or maybe ask on the gentoo forums..
Sorry can not help you with LXTQ..

                        Hope you get it sorted..

                          GOT IT!!!

Took a bit of fiddling to get “light” compiled and installed… and… IT WORKS, YAY!

Then it took a bit more fiddling to get the key bindings right but now it’s working. 🙂

Well Done glad you have seen the light.

light_1.2_amd64.deb you could have just downloaded the deb file..and run sudo dpkg -i light_1.2_amd64.deb
