I have successfully installed the legacy 304xx nvidia driver on both my antiX-17.4 and antiX-19.3 installs to hard disk.
After rebooting after the driver install finished I noticed the menu fonts on the IceWM menu are very small and poorly rendered. I can fix it by selecting a Theme from the Themes menu. But why does this happen? I noticed this also after I powered back on from a cold start. Should I be setting up a Theme in my startup file? If so, how do I do that? I’ve never played with Themes before. Maybe it’s in the desktop-session folder?
Oddly, this did not happen when I was using the nouveau driver, but only after switching to the nvidia driver.

::Hi seaken64
in the hidden folder ~/icewm you will have a folder called themes in which the themes of your choice
can be stored. You will have or need to create a text file called theme in which you state which theme to use
my text file looks like below using the BobC theme antiX-Magic-Small”. # in front causes icesh to ignore line.#Theme=”Clearview Blue Medium/default.theme”
Theme=”antiX-Magic-Small”
#Theme=”Simplest_black-Small”You can find literaly hundreds of icewm themes in the net. I just recommend and use the one created by BobCto use screen
space as efficiently as possible, others have different tastes. Its good we have so much choice.- This reply was modified 2 years, 1 month ago by ModdIt.

::Thanks moddIt, I’ll try that. Like I said, I’ve never played with themes before. I always just use the default. But it seems that I need to be more proactive to set a theme since installing the nvidia driver.

::I guess I don’t yet understand where to put the default theme. I do have a file named “theme” inside my ~/.icewm. Inside that file are five lines, all of them commented out except the first one. The line that is not commented is the name of the theme I had chose from the menu. But when I reboot and IceWM starts up the Theme does not take. I get very small and poor fonts. If I select the Theme from the menu it is fixed. But then it does not work again the next time I reboot.
Where do I find the config file that selects the IceWM theme at start up?
Thanks,

::I have a text file ~/.icewm/theme where I select the theme I want. Any others such as the standard icewm theme hashed
so they do not start. That is where I change the theme for automatic usage at startup.A folder /home/demo/.icewm/themes containing folders with the downloaded themes
I have had issues with defective downloaded themes in the past, otherwise everyting has always just worked.
Getting very small and poor fonts may mean you do not have the required fonts for the selected theme installed or they are
wrongly linked in the theme. While testing within icewm # $ icewm – -restart is useful to see if things work as expected. Minus minus restart as I
expect the forum software to strike again. If you are still stuck pls post again, maybe BobC can give further help, he built the theme I use and has a lot more in
depth icewm knowledge than I have.Be a help if you could also point us to the theme so we can test with it.

::Both the theme file(s) and the decoration pixmaps live in a single subdirectory under ICE-LIB/themes, where ICE-LIB is either the IceWM system directory or a users’ .icewm directory. Themes then appear in the “Themes” item on the program menu. The default theme on startup is set in the theme file or by the -t option in the command line.
That quote was from https://ice-wm.org/themes/ which is referred to by the official IceWM FAQ document. I do not have a “themes” directory in my ~/.icewm folder, only a “theme” file. Where does antiX hold the Themes?
I found an icewm folder in /usr/share wherein is a themes folder. Inside of that themes folder are several other folders that match the names on the |Settings|Themes menu. I think that is the default location for the themes. My ~/.icewm/theme file selects “BlueDay-Large”. And while it does come up with the colors and icons the fonts are not good until after I re-select the BlueDay-Large theme.
I tried switching to the Clearview Blue Large theme and rebooted. Same symptom appears – the icons and colors are correct for the chosen theme but the fonts are bad. If I re-select the theme it is fixed.
There is something wrong with how my IceWM startup theme is being implemented. But I don’t yet know what it is. Something to do with nvidia maybe. But I don’t know how to track it down. Why would the fonts be bad when using the nvidia driver but not when using the nouveau driver? How do I learn how a video driver affects the system fonts? And why does selecting the theme manually fix it. The fonts are obviously supported. But they don’t show until after selecting from the menu.

::I do not have a “themes” directory in my ~/.icewm folder, only a “theme” file.
Then pls just create one and copy in your theme packages, set the one you want on your
desktop in the theme file. sample as in earlier post.in that place changes are safe from system updates and at least in all the user installations
I look after have never given issues. I have frequently changed themes, never used usr/share
which is overridden by the individual setup in desktop icewm folder. This applies to antix 19 and Bullseye alpha one and 2 when using icewm.
I use Nvidia legacy, it has made no difference to icewm themes in more than one
year of using antiX.,April 5, 2021 at 7:26 pm #57116Moderator

::If you choose another theme from the menu , this should stick after a reboot.
The same if you change your dpi-settings with the set-dpi from control-centre, it should still last after a reboot.
Does it help to restart icewm from menu > lougout ?
Could you post the /var/log/Xorg.0.log ?April 5, 2021 at 11:44 pm #57137MemberRobin
::Maybe this strange behaviour is caused by the patches you probably didn’t apply while installing the 304 legacy driver? I have an nvidia 6600 GPU also, and for me it was the opposite way around: only after installing the original nvidia driver the screen was bright and sharp at once, without any milky fog again (as seen with nouveau driver). No problems with font sizes or sharpness here. So my idea would be to look for differences in the procedure of driver installation in the first place.
Maybe moreover you want to look into nvidia-settings from antiX menu (submenu “settings”), or just type nvidia-settings in a terminal window. It should be present and functioning if the driver is installed correctly. There are some controls you might want to play with around a little. I had to adjust some of them also.
Windows is like a submarine. Open a window and serious problems will start.

How old is that machine? Did you ever solve it?
I have the same issue with system fonts being too small (apps display just fine) when using the NVIDIA driver recommended when installing through the Control Centre- the one from the standard repros, not seaching for newer versions- I reset the DPI from within the Control Centre, but it doesn’t persist over a reboot. That’s with an NVIDIA GeForce GT 635 and a pretty old Acer running 19.4 that originally shipped with Windows Vista, I have antiX 19.4, Mint Cinnamon 20.2, and the most recent build of Windows 10 on it. antiX is the only one that has issues with my NVIDIA card. Also on this older computer, the sound craps out when running the NVIDIA driver. Running the Nouveau I get onboard sound, but still no HDMI audio. MX-Linux displays the fonts fine, but has no audio whatsoever, from the card or onboard, regardless of the driver being NVIDIA or Nouveau. I uninstalled the MX-Linux.
Interestingly, I just installed another GT 635 in a newer computer I built in 2016 or so, also running 19.4, and I only had to set the DPI once, and it persists, and I have onboard audio (and maybe HDMI too but the monitor on that one doesn’t have speakers).
I’m beginning to think antiX/MX just don’t like certain hardware paired with NVIDIA.

::RickyRacoon, could you post the /var/log/Xorg.0.log of the system where the fonts are to small after every reboot ?
Maybe it’s the same problem mentioned in this thread.

Perhaps it was just a minor setting error with pulseaudio in pavucontrol.- This reply was modified 1 year, 8 months ago by caprea.

Perhaps it was just a minor setting error with pulseaudio in pavucontrol.Sure thing!
Hope I’m doing this right… I don’t see a Preview, so I’ll leave the code at the bottom.
I’m not booted to antiX atm, but I’ve bookemarked that thread you mention and will try it, thanks!
As for the MX, I might try it again and see if it still messes the sound up. antiX won’t connect to the NVIDIA card audio, but it’s no problem personally, as I prefer using the integrated sound anyway. Getting the DPI to persist would be nice, though. It remembers my menu selection- I don’t have to rescroll through the choices, but I do have to run the change DPI utility each time I boot to antiX. Thanks for the link I’ll give that a try soon.

because the driver uses the EDID Dpi https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extended_Display_Identification_Data which is obviously wrong.

::How old is that machine? Did you ever solve it?
I’m beginning to think antiX/MX just don’t like certain hardware paired with NVIDIA.
@RickyRacoon,
I was not able to fix this until today, following Caprea’s input on your querry. It turns out that it is not a problem particular to antiX/MX but rather how the default driver responds to the Edid DPI settings. Probably some of those other distros addressed this for you in the settings and in antiX you have to catch it and make them config edits yourself.
This machine is an old Dell Dimension R521 with AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600+ and a GeForce 6600 PCIe graphics card. Here’s the inxi output:

I read thru that thread you posted and followed the directions and viola! The DPI is now set as 120×120 and the menu fonts are coming up normally after reboot.
Thanks Caprea!
So, apparently the IceWM menu font does not respect the DPI setting from the Control Panel but uses the settings in the Xorg nvidia driver. I learned something new.
Topic SOLVED.
