      I decided to look at Seamonkey, since it is supposedly a lighter browser. Not only was there a recommended update on the Seamonkey start page, there was an update available from the Help menu. BUT there is a warning that I don’t currently have permission to update Seamonkey. So then, what do I do to update Seamonkey, assuming that updating is desirable with antiX?

      EDIT: Played the video at YouTube in Seamonkey. No sound. Is this the pulse audio problem? But no doubt about it, there is no video lag in YouTube stream using Seamonkey. There’s no video lag, but there’s also NO SOUND.

      Have sound in firefox, no sound in seamonkey

      Okay, that edit fixed Seamonkey sound. The add-ons for SM are obsolete, not even an ad blocker!

        I got tired of my wireless connection dropping, so now I have ethernet connection. Big improvement, BUT still see video lag when streaming YouTube, so I guess I am going to have to modify xorg.conf

        I wonder if 64-bit antiX would play video better, maybe reduce or eliminate the video lag?

          The video lag, when video is out of sync with audio, is a player specific problem, the culprit are all the malfunctioning web players they use nowadays per default on these streaming web sites. When playing the streams in an external player like mpv, you can simply press the key shortcut ctrl + and ctrl – in order to adjust and correct the A/V lag, each button press will change the delay 1/10 second.
          Moreover you can select a stream bandwith which fits to your internet connection and to your hardware performance both. Additionally it makes use of GPU instead of CPU whenever possible, while the web players don’t care. Resulting in having only 10% CPU load and scatter free display when playing a stream in the external player while having 100% cpu load and constantly disrupted playback in web player. You can even run video streams flawlessly via wlan this way (given your place is not overcrowded in terms of wlan activity already).

          I wonder if 64-bit antiX would play video better, maybe reduce or eliminate the video lag?

          Simple answer: No. I run all videos and streams flawlessly under 32 bit on single core CPU, but as said before: Avoid using these disastrous web players.

            still see video lag when streaming YouTube

            Try using smtube to stream youtube videos – on computers low on resources, it provides much better results than streaming inside a browser window.
            smtube is provided, out of the box in antiX full, and is available in the repository. Think of it like the “You Tube” application that is usually offered in mobile devices…

              The video lag of which I speak is not only behind the sound, it is very choppy, like it is showing a reduced frame rate, like skipping frames to produce a jumpy sequence. The perceived continuity in presentation of frames is very poor. Where is the setting to select a preferred player for streaming YouTube videos?

                Just tried your link.
                Simply use right click to copy the link to your clipboard.
                Then open roxterm (a terminal emulator) and type
                mpv https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SF8ST5YEts
                That’s all. It’s enough to type mpv and then paste the copied link from clipboard, either using right click or ctrl+shift+v in roxterm)

                I’ve just tested it on a 20 years old 32 bit Pentium M @1,7GHz with 2GB RAM installed, antiX 19 full most recently updated and kernel upgraded to 4.19.0-222-antiX-686-smp-pae, connected via WLAN.
                Result: no dropped frames, no choppy display no sound delay. Everything fine. CPU load is around 20% while playing the video even fullscreen on secondary tv-out of the graphics card, and typing this answer the same time on the primary screen.
                AV: 00:06:20 / 01:34:37 (6%) A-V: 0.000 Dropped: 0 Cache: 328s/18MB

                For comparison: When trying to play the link directly in browser: no fun, the web player is blocking my system completely (100% CPU load immediately, choppy display and myriades of dropped frames)

                So simply copy the link to your console-window and precede it by the characters mpv (or whatever player you prefer). That’s all what is needed. Really.

                  Robin’s suggestion may work for videos that are not in high resolution- unless you have mpv configured to always open youtube videos on a predetermined resolution (like 360p or 480p), mpv may try to stream the video on a resolution that’s higher than your computer can render…
                  That’s why I made the suggestion to use smtube – where you can select to open videos on mpv and also the resolution you want your videos to be played in.

                  Mpv also has a GUI mode – launch mpv from the menu and drag and drop any Youtube link to mpv’s window, and, after some moments, it will begin playing.

                  But we can suggest all we want, it’s up to the OP to follow our suggestion or not…

                  Edit: reading back from this thread I noticed that you ask some questions that are surprising – like suggesting to have a right click open on a file and being able to select the application that will be used to open that file (already implemented) or asking if, when selecting the Default applications, a .desktop file or an executable file should be used – just looking at the application window, you can see all options point to the application’s .desktop files… so… why ask that? Specially because you can try changing that setting and see if it works…
                  My advice (that you did not ask for)? Don’t try to reinvent the wheel… Start from the basics, read the sticky forum posts to get a better handle on antiX, then try customizing it to your licking… To me, it seems you are trying to build the house starting from the roof, not it’s foundations… And that’s probably the reason that you don’t get answers for some of your questions…

                    may work for videos that are not in high resolution

                    Good point, PPC, this is true. So either he’ll have to use smtube as you have implied (which I didn’t suggest since he talked about having a link in browser already) or he needs to append some options to make mpv select a specific stream, fitting to the CPU/GPU power and internet line capacity available:

                    mpv --ytdl-format='best[tbr<=1000]/bestvideo[tbr<=1000]+bestaudio' 'https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SF8ST5YEts'

                    You might want to experiment with the value 1000 (always in both positions). E.g. on my 32 bit Pentium M is a value of 3000 fine for distortion free playback via WLAN and a default DSL internet connection. (Btw, this is the exact command aCSTV uses for determining the correct stream in terms of bandwidth.) The command will select the stream with highest bandwidth available below the given value, whatever format or resolution it has.
                    Didn’t mention this option in the first answers, since I didn’t want to make things look to much complicated šŸ™‚

                      To my helpers, I do admit to being a bit flummoxed by the restrictions imposed by permissions. For example, I am accustomed to downloading a video to target, in my data partition where the file will ultimately reside, but because that action is not permitted, I must download to Download folder, and then transfer the file to the data partition. My current quest is all about convenience. As I mentioned, Seamonkey can play/stream the Youtube video without any distortion. But Seamonkey has a deficiency of Add-ons, so I must put up with pre-video Youtube ads, and I’m not sure there is a downloader Add-on for SM. (I don’t know if you’ve ever tried to use the downloader in Pale Moon, but I never figured it out.) If Seamonkey had those convenient ad-ons, I would drop FF in a flash. I would prefer not to use command line for YouTube activity, but it’s good to know how pick a player from terminal. I am always going to use VLC to playback videos I have downloaded, that reside on my data partition. As far as I know, there aren’t many players that can disable embedded subtitles, change playback speed, and play all the formats, mkv, avi, you name it. About the right-click context menu, are you saying the capabilities I desire are there? Well, I didn’t see it. By the way, what does “Shift Open” mean? Comment: When I asked the dumb question, I honestly didn’t recall that the Preferred Application program browsed for desktop shortcuts. I’m still looking for a setting to associate a player for YouTube streaming. Not there, has to be done manually? Is Firefox picking the player, then there must be a setting in FF? You say there’s all kinds of inadequate players. Who’s picking the player?

                        Hi dugin, please slowdown as others have suggested, you write I must download to Download folder, and then transfer the file to the data partition.
                        That is not the case, just a permissions issue, you can change to fix that.
                        Why watch youtube with a Browser which sucks CPU and GPU. There are way better tools included in the distro. Others try to help you but it looks like dug in is sort of fitting.

                        AntiX is way more powerful and efficient than windoze, but you have to be open to different ways. File permissions are to protect you or the system from harm. Take a read on users and groups, it is not difficult to understand. And pls do not be afraid of the terminal, most of the pretty boxes you see call bash scripts. The time it takes to write such long posts would be much better invested reading in the forum and trying different tools. More enjoyable in the end too.

                          I tried to boot up frugal antiX 32-bit, but got an unexpected problem just before booting:

                          Non-Fatal Error
                          Could not enable required root! persistence
                          c = continue
                          p = power off
                          r = reboot

                          I tried again, got same error, then deleted the current frugal install, and replaced it with a backup. When I booted up the backup, I got the same error. What happened? By the way, I can see and edit the entire antiX-frugal folder. FYI, I custom set the persistence file to be 8 GB in size.

                            Here’s my plan. I don’t think antiX frugal can coexist with other frugal installs on the same partition. So I am going to frugal install antiX on a dedicated 8-GB usb drive. I guess I need to do some reading on how to prepare this usb drive for an installation. I sure hope grub2 isn’t involved.
                            Here’s what I want to accomplish.
                            1- I don’t want antiX on my hard drive, no save to or boot from hdd
                            2- everything antiX goes on a single usb drive
                            3- no grub installation on my hard drive
                            4- boot from usb
                            5- persistence save to usb
                            6- run in RAM, as in toram
                            I generated a live usb by running Live USB Maker. I booted from live usb, but couldn’t proceed because the USB could not be used as a boot device since it was mounted. So does this mean I have to perform the first boot from liveDVD? There’s no F8 Save option if I boot from liveDVD.

                                If you boot from dvd, you can create the live-usb via the Live USB Maker program. If you make it this way, then you can save options with the F8 key. (Otherwise you can’t.) The live usb is designed to be self-contained: no installing grub, persistence saved to usb, option to run in ram.

                                Important note: You’ll want to REMASTER your live usb system periodically. You’ll need more space on the usb than just your persistence file. (But I already mentioned this earlier in this thread; I won’t bother you with it again — I hope). šŸ˜‰

                                A handy thing to keep in mind: The antiX live system is a different paradigm than most other Linux live systems. Do not think it is the same as Puppy or Ubuntu, etc.

                                  I have viewed dolphin oracle’s antiX liveUSB setup video 5 times, and watched 10 other videos by him. He doesn’t address the circularity that I encountered above. I know the issue isn’t insoluble because I am using the live-usb right now with Failsafe Boot. The boot program looks for a boot device, lists my logical drives, but the USB drive(s) are highlighted and unselectable because they are mounted. The tutorial does make a helpful distinction, that so-called frugal install options refer to saves to hdd, so I should not be selecting Frugal-Root, as was recommended earlier. Rather, I should be selecting some variant of Persist-. What is the recommended Persist option?
