Recently I tried a frugal install on an external SSD drive that is MBR, but it failed. I have MX Linux installed on my internal HDD drive, and used its grub. The frugal antix correctly showed up in the initial GRUB boot up screen, but clicking on it brought up a long list of errors. It basically couldn’t find the frugal install. Note I AM experienced with customizing the custom 40 file in grub, as I have done that with other distros. And I use the generated code for grub that antix created. So I suspect that frugal installs simply cannot work on external drives?? Also my internal drive is GPT, but the external is MBR.

Have you checked whether the external drive is visible to grub at boot time? Might be a bit tricky to find out the proper grub drive identifier. Try to check out on grub console.

In case it’s about an external drive connected via USB it might be possible you need special BIOS settings for USB to allow the drive to get accessed by grub.

Windows is like a submarine. Open a window and serious problems will start.

Thanks for the info, and I liked the linked page. But at this point I’m going to give up on it, although i might well try again later this year or the next. For now I’ll probably just install antix on my slower, internal, classic HDD.
