Forum for users of antiX Linux. Mean and Lean and Proudly anti-fascist.
Question: to use an old iMac as an ftp at home server using antiX, do I need to tweak it so that the hard drive never spins down? (If so, how do I do that?) Thanks!
Hi arp,
Maybe the console command hdparm provides what you are looking for. It has a -Z option, but I’m not sure whether it works on all types of spinning hard drives. man hdparm only mentions Seagate… Possibly there are some other manufacturer specific tools you need to apply, or you should look for a setting in Open_firmware/BIOS/EFI of the Computer. I was used to find power saving default settings in BIOS always, including a spindown setting (60 min, 30 min … 5 min, never). Again, not sure whether these still exist, or whether you can locate them in apples open firmware BIOS.

Windows is like a submarine. Open a window and serious problems will start.
