[solved] Gnome-core black screen on reboot

Antix 19.4 apt upgraded to latest.

Installed gnome-core using the package installer for other desktops.

(Latest GIMP requires gnome & has .psb support, which are just large psds that are now standard.)

Went to other desktops & set spacefm-iceWM back on because gnome had weird default driver settings & didn’t want to mess with them.

Rebooted, can get passed GRUB, but then it hangs with a black screen & no login or prompt.

I think I need to switch back to slim from gnome, but can’t get a prompt.

Any ideas?

Update: so it black screens after loading from grub and the last thing I see is it is loading ram disk.

If I press Ctrl + alt + F11 I can briefly get some terminal text that’s too fast to read & then back to black screen.

Also in grub console I can run videoinfo, but videotest will black screen hang after the first test screen.

It looks all black with some color quads top left & a dialog overlay with some brown fox fence jumping text.

Then after pressing a key it black screen hangs.

From researching online I think the non-open source Nvidia drivers are incompatible with gnome.

Need some sort of non-gnome safe mode to put slim back & remove gnome-core.

Hi PenguinGuy,
your quickest and surest way back is to reinstall from your last working system snapshot.

Going the hard way, If your system is not encrypted you can access /var/log/apt/history. logs which will
give information on changes you made and need to revert. Not best way as changed config files can still be
in the way even after using purge command. You will not need a gui, just terminal access.

Can you plz explain or link how to do this?

I can only see how to use the GRUB console. There is no other options like in live boot with F6.

You need to edit your grub parameter so you can boot in to a text console.
I think below link should help get you there.
You may need to experiment.
In any situation like the one you have I just
use my backups so not practiced the method for a long time now.

Access the var log history logs from a live stick. If you have no backups,
use a live stick and copy your important files or documents from home to an
off computer media of some kind before further rescue/repair attempts.

[SOLVED] Update: Use the live thumb stick to boot & select video safe mode.

Then I copied the xorg.conf from the live boot into my HD folder (renaming the older xorg.conf 1st).

When I rebooted the HD it appeared to be in ‘video safe mode’ & I was able to install the latest Nvidia driver without issue.

Then I opened the old xorg.conf & copied some settings so I didn’t have to reconfig the driver manually.

It would probably be helpful if there was a script or tool that did this in the future.

Ended up just clean installing to antiX 21 from 19.4 with a thumb drive.

However, once I removed the Nouveau driver & blacklisted them during an install I got the Black Screen Hang on boot again (while trying to install the latest drivers from Nvidia).

This didn’t happen previously when on 19.4 I blacklisted & installed the Nvidia driver (before installing Gnome-core) — maybe this is linked to an antiX update (less than a year old)?

Adding ‘ 3’ & purging did not work at all & it would just hang with a black screen. I’ve seen online this might be an issue with Wayland, but it says ‘unknown Nvidia device’ before going all black.
