      Hello

I have been testing antix for 2 days. And some questions have come up. Here are three of them:

First question: I installed the tool “Grub-Customizer” on the current version of antix-full, with icewm. The application runs correctly when I start it from the terminal and have previously done sudo su. But if I want to start it from the menu, nothing happens. The application starts in Q4OS Distro and opens a small window where I can enter the root password. Can I get that on antix too?

Second question: If not, is there a similar tool for antix, i.e. GUI, not coding?

Third question: antix runs quite slowly with Chromium. Are there any applications that are in autostart and occupy RAM? I only have 1GB. Can I stop such applications or remove them from autostart?

      many thanks πŸ™‚

Remove chromium and install Brave ( also based on Chrome, Is 3x faster and Half the ram
Furthermore, Waterfox G3 ( latest edition ) is lean and mean ( on my Lenovo Laptop, but not fast on my Compaq laptop.
Is your laptop not updatable to 2Gb ? Most of them are ! Will be a benefit for all Internet related things
        Good luck

Is there a .desktop file for Grub Customizer in /usr/share/applications? If there is you can edit that to change the launcher to use the sudo utility. Look at other *.desktop files to get the idea.

1gb is more than enough for antiX. You need to share your info with us so we can help you sort it out. Open a terminal and type

          inxi -Fxz

and then copy the output to the forum.

Also, yes, you can disable some start up services. You can also use software that uses less memory. And you can tweak the settings in some program, like Chromium, to handle memory better.

There is lots of info on this subject here in the forum. Do a forum search on “light weight browser” or “memory resources” or something like that.

              grub-customizer
But if I want to start it from the menu, nothing happens.

I installed it to test and found the same result.
from commandline “sudo grub-customizer” did launch the UI.

              ~/.desktop-session/startup
Here you can outcomment items which are slated to autostart at the beginning of each graphical desktop session

              sudo sysv-rc-conf
This enables you to specify which services will be autostarted.
Booting typically brings you to runlevel 5 (starts SLiM + desktop-session). Editing the autostarts for other runlevels would probably be moot. Really, none of those “services” consume a significant amount of memory though.

Are there any applications that are in autostart and occupy RAM?

              sudo htop
              sudo ps_mem.py
These tools enable you to see which processes are running, amount of memory consumed, etc.

                !) Grub customizer
This is a policykit related issue. You need to install policykit-1-gnome and enable in ~/.desktop-session/startup the line:

                # Use pkexec (you need to install policykit-1-gnome)
                /usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 &

Or simply launch it from terminal using sudo and forget about launching from the menus.
                sudo grub-customizer

                  Many thanks to everyone πŸ™‚

Now I’ll work my way through the answers step by step.

It would be great if I could find a good browser that used less ram than Chromium, or could configure Chromium better. I’ll know more soon.

antix runs very well. It takes some getting used to with the graphical user interface, but it works πŸ™‚

                  have a nice weekend!

Will look around for another 1GB Ram, of course. It’s a Toshiba Satelite, from 2010, nearly unused! Got it fro free πŸ™‚

You should definitely try Opera! It runs the best of all I’ve tried so far! Apparently Opera handles the memory much better than Chromium or Firefox. The options in the settings are strong, there is a built-in add blocker. I am really surprised by Opera πŸ™‚
