      Just loaded Antix on and old HP510 laptop with a 32GB PATA SSD / 2GB RAM

      The installer all looks good and completes without error 🙂

      However on first attempt at booting I get a grub error;

      error: attempt to read or write outside of disk 'hd0'
      Entering rescue mode...
      grub rescue >

      I can list contents of discs like this;

      ls (hd0,msdos3)/

      which give me a full root listing etc

      Any tips on how to boot this puppy?

        I believe your machine has a 1024 limit issue.

        In this case, if the boot files that grub or other bootloaders look for are too far “down” the disk. Some old BIOSes require these within the first 1024 cylinders of the hard disk. This is fixed by making a small partition (1 GB) at the beginning of the hard disk and placing the necessary bootloader files and kernel files there.

        An internet search will pull up many discussions of this.

        Here is one link that describes how to deal with it: https://askubuntu.com/questions/397485/what-to-do-when-i-get-an-attempt-to-read-or-write-outside-of-disk-hd0-error.

        hope that helps.

          Sorry to say that link was one of the first I read, amongst many similar. Not one of the suggestions worked. Spent hours on it.

          I have moved on since then [installed Q4OS] so this can be considered CLOSED
