So I want to install Antix 19.2.1 386 Base on my 20 year old PC to make it available again. During the installation process everything went fine, except at the end when “Grub installation failed” appeared. I chose “autoinstall using the entire disc” and I used the default boot method settings (MBR). I did not uncheck “Install GRUB for Linux and Windows”, though there’s no Windows left on the PC…
So what should I do now? Is there a way to fix grub or do I have to reinstall?
      Thanks for any advice!

Boot antiX live and use Boot Repair tool to reinstall grub

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

What did you have installed on the hard disk before? If I were you I would use the LiveUSB and then run “gparted” to repartition and reformat the hard drive. Use EXT3 for formatting. Then reboot and install antiX from there. It’s okay to let the installer do everything. It will partition and format again but at least you are starting from a fresh drive.

            Thanks for the replies!
Windows XP was installed on one partition, the other was files. I simply wanted to format the whole disk and I suppose the installer took care of that already. I will first try Boot repair and hope it’ll work. If not I can reformat.

I chose “autoinstall using the entire disc”

That means that there is no longer a boot loader for your system. anticapitalista’s solution is the way to go.

Boot antiX live and use Boot Repair tool to reinstall grub

Control Centre > Maintenance > Boot Repair > Reinstall Grub > MBR, etc.

I think the installation option to install Grub should be better worded. For your case, you must see it as:
“If you have no other boot manager installed in your system, or you only have Windows, you need to install GRUB to boot into antiX.”
