::Thanks Brian for carefully weighed analysis. Indeed as you describe – choices are there for those who want to learn how to and pursue options. Easier with boot loaders. Much harder with implementation of init system options. Much needs to be invested in re-architecting for that.
This is where much credit to anticapitalista should go for implementing Runit init for antiX. Unfortunately we lost the key developer of Runit – Xecure, so I do not know how much further enhancement can be expected…
So antiX provides a choice of init systems, precisely in the spirit of choice. I am not aware of any other distro that provides a choice of init system. Has this been even noticed and appreciated by any ‘distro reviewers’?…
From such perspective the spirit of antiX is not totalitarian as other distros but rather republican in nature (I cannot use ‘democratic’ term here due to straying to totalitarian and oppressive restriction of freedom standing behind this word nowadays). Respecting the notion of freedom of choice and making this easy to users is what antiX is about:
– Freedom of choice of init system
– Freedom from pre-cooked DE’s which force on users their own composition of software and making it hard or even impossible to replace their software with other, often better options. Just as example – try to remove Konqeror browser from KDE. Or try to remove PCManFM from LXDE to replace with another file manager. On the other hand antiX provides modularity, freedom of choice of four supported WMs, choice of file managers, etc.
– Freedom of operating modes, such as traditionally installed, Live or Frugal modes. I should emphasize that MX is another one here…Just my opinion…

::@olsztyn: again, good comments, and thank you for your complement.
Regarding our choices, the Net, Core, Base, and Full use and installation choices are great.
Many years ago, I built, ironically enough, a desktop version of antiX using Core, not because I had to; I also had ANOTHER installed version of antiX, I simply wanted to demonstrate the capability; a few years later, when MEPIS ceased active development, the MX Linux team picked up the MEPIS pieces and initially created an Xfce version of MX Linux. I never shared an ISO image of my antiX Core creation, but it was actually an Xfce implementation that was remarkably similar to the first instance of MX Linux (probably just a coincidence).
I haven’t been doing anything with Net, Core, or Base lately because I’ve been able to use our tools in other ways to create instances of antiX that are just right for my current needs. The point of this whole conversation is that our distribution really does have a LOT of wonderful choices and options; we’re not limited to the default selections because the release kits, packaging tools, and repositories are so rich with options that it’s comparatively easy to create whatever you want; the longer you work with antiX, the more you realize the many ways it can be expertly tuned or honed to each person’s needs or interests WITHOUT having to earn a PhD in order to be successful in creating the perfect personal system for yourself or to make an entirely different one for a spouse, friend, or loved one!

::๐ Just found this official doc statement right under my noseโฆ.
file:///usr/share/antiX/FAQ/index.html
If users are happy with their present bootloader, grub-legacy, grub2 or whatever else, then it is best to install grub to the root partition or donโt install it at all and then make the necessary changes after installation.
If you are installing only antiX over another OS, or dual booting with windows, then install grub to the MBR.ps: Brian – “Xfce implementation” these days has grown more bloated year on year – Yikes…
Is Xfce implementation now heavier than MATE? There used to be a jumbled list on Debian web page.
If you are going for Heavy just go for latest Gnome – it’s just so professional in looks and in use ๐
No need to tell y’all of my choice ๐ Just Joking ๐- This reply was modified 5 months, 2 weeks ago by banned.
