A few weeks back I was having an unrelated problem between antiX & my phone. That problem is solved now,but in the interim I had replaced antix on my main laptop with MX linux. Now that my problem is solvedI want to re-install antiX on my main laptop & start using my secondary laptop for experimenting/tinkering & causing more un-needed chaos & headaches. Before doing my re-install of antiX, I need to remove all my files, but have found that I can’t see my usbs/external drives from Gui from any port. I’ve tried several different usbs & hard-drives. I can see them in the terminal using “sudo fdisk -ls”. Also when I run the format usb program & the live usb program, I can see all usbs no matter which port, in those gui. I’ve tried “mkdir” named /dev/sdb in media which has worked for me before in the past, but not now. Since I can see them in the terminal, I’ve tried the “cp -r” & “mv -r” commands to move my files to a usb or external hard-drive, but that doesn’t work either. Any suggestions?
I should add that this is a very new problem & had been using my usbs & hard-drives with now problem. I have no idea what I have done to cause this.

::If you have antiX full or base, try SpaceFM or the new zzzFM.

::If we are still talking about antiX, and you are using one of the default file managers,
Case 1: You expect the device to automount and the file manager to pop up once you connect an external device.
Control Centre > Disks > Configure Automount > Automount External Devices (enable) [I am not sure if you ned to restart the session or if it works out of the box without log-out).Case 2: You are using Spacefm and cannot see the external devices on the left pane.
Launch SpaceFM > top-left drive icon (show Devices, or in the top menu, Devices > Show Devices)If non of the above, use Mount Connected Devices to manually mount them (but this shouldn’t be happening).

::@Xsecure and BobC
My apologies, I guess I wasn’t clear. It’s not with antiX that I was having the problem, it’s with MX Linux, which I want to replace with antiX, that I’m having the problem. I don’t have SpaceFM or a Control Center, only Thunar & PCmanFM. After reading your (Xsecure) suggestion about auto-mounting, I searched online for suggestions on mounting from the command line, but none of those suggestions worked. Although I can see the usb from the terminal, when I try to mount it with a command such as “udisksctl mount -b /dev/(device name)”, in my case the terminal tells me is /dev/sdb, I get a message that there is no directory there. I tried a couple of other suggestions as well, but got the same message.
I should add that I can run a live usb on the same laptop/MXlinux with no problem, which tells me that the usb can be seen.July 17, 2021 at 1:39 pm #63173Moderator

::Have you tried booting with an antiX live-USB to access the hdd?

::SpaceFM is just a newer fork of PCManFM with a bunch more features. They are quite similar, but SpaceFM is more capable. It can be installed on MXLinux with Synaptic.
I’m not really sure at this point what you are trying to run and do.
I’ll boot up MX 19.4 and have a look
…. I booted MX 19.4. After it booted I plugged in an antiX USB,, and Thunar opened a window with it.

::In Thunar, under Edit, Preferences, there is an advanced tab where you can check volume management, and it has an option to configure removeable drives, devices, and media

::Do I understand what your intent is – to save your data files then wipe MX off the computer, replacing it with antiX?
If so, I think just booting with an antiX live-usb would enable you to do all of that, all at once.confirmed antiX frugaler, since 2019

@Christophe Prior to seeing your reply, I had only tried with another distro I had available on a live usb at the time. After seeing your reply, I quickly made an antiX live usb & gave it a try. I couldn’t see anything either time, but it’s probably because I don’t know how. All I can see are the files that are there because of the live install & nothing else. How would I check my own home folder on the hdd? I assume I should be able to see another usb as well, so I can move my files? Now I’m so curious….

::A simple solution would be to boot the antiX USB, and then use SpaceFM to mount the MX partition of the HDD and copy the files you want to save to a separate flashdrive. My screenshot above shows the settings to see the HDD volumes

Yes, I want to save my files, then wipe MX, replacing with antiX. If I boot with antiX, it will wipe all my files? When I booted with MX, I did it the simple way, putting home & root together, then encrypting it. Although I know how to make separate root, home, swap partitions, I only just recently learned how to encrypt them that way.July 17, 2021 at 2:19 pm #63183Anonymous

@BobC
though I knew I could install it, I didn’t realize that it might make a difference….. I’ll give it a try…[quote quote=63176] I’m not really sure at this point what you are trying to run and do.

Yes, and up until a couple of days ago, Thunar would do so for me. This problem just occurred.

Forgive the messiness with all the quoting, I’m learning on the fly how to do it. I’ll try to be neater….. I just took a look at the Thunar advanced preferences, It is enabled, but there’s a message that says that there are missing dependencies,that it looks like there are missing gvfs, then it left me a link to read. So, I’m fixin’ to read through it & see what it says.

::Just use SpaceFM from antiX USB. Click my screenshot up above and check all the boxes I have checked, and all your drives will appear (like mine do on the sidebar). Double click the one you want files from to mount and open it.
