Hi, I’m trying to use Hardware acceleration with Intel 865G chipset in order to use Kodi media center.
$ lspci | grep VGA 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)On a fresh antix21 install kodi launches but displays a green screen where one cannot recognize the selected menus although moving the mouse moves some pixels.
Here is the error while launching kodi in the console :display: :0.0 screen: 0 libva info: VA-API version 1.10.0 libva info: Trying to open /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/dri/i915_drv_video.so libva info: va_openDriver() returns -1 libvdpau-va-gl: Device::Resource::Resource(): gl error 1280 Error creating VDPAU device: 25Same error whith command vainfo
Indeed there is no file named i915_drv_video.so in /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/dri/, but only i915_dri.so. I tried to install some packages that may contain it whithout success (libvdpau-va-gl1, i965-va-driver, intel-media-va-driver, firmware-misc-nonfree). Actually it looks like it is not shipped with any package at all https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=704801
I also tried
export LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=i965wich leads to a similar error message :
$ vainfo libva info: VA-API version 1.10.0 libva info: User environment variable requested driver 'i965' libva info: Trying to open /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/dri/i965_drv_video.so libva info: Found init function __vaDriverInit_1_8 libva error: /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/dri/i965_drv_video.so init failed libva info: va_openDriver() returns -1 vaInitialize failed with error code -1 (unknown libva error),exitTrying to symlink i915_drv_video.so to i915_dri.so doesn’t work.
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/dri/i915_dri.so /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/dri/i915_drv_video.sogives
$ vainfo libva info: VA-API version 1.10.0 libva info: User environment variable requested driver 'i915' libva info: Trying to open /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/dri/i915_drv_video.so libva error: /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/dri/i915_drv_video.so has no function __vaDriverInit_1_0 libva info: va_openDriver() returns -1 vaInitialize failed with error code -1 (unknown libva error),exitwould this mean my chipset doesn’t support hardware aceleration or this feature is not supported under linux by now ?

::I’m afraid your graphic is not supported for hardware acceleration, did you have a look at this thread ?

::Oh thank you, this brings a lot of clarity to the issue ! I was not able to find this thread while searching for various keyword in this website. Now even the complete thread name returns no result… Would I have missed an alternative search form ? I used the one on the top right.
This issue commonly arises when someone tries to use a recent kodi with an old GPU needing the i915 driver. I don’t clearly understand whether the bug comes from new kodi development practices or the driver’s packaging, but it may be fixed by using an older version of kodi, wich is sufficient for my needs.
My intel chipset seems pretty old though. I will run some tests, but for the time being it is only able to play videos up to 720p quality.December 2, 2021 at 6:24 pm #72124Moderator

::Thank you for the screenshot.
I can’t manage to install an older version of kodi on antix21. I was able to find here some .deb packages that fit my architecture, but I had to downgrade up to 17.3, and the huge number of dependencies required for this would certainly break my installation. The latest kodi version reported to work with my chipset was 18.4 Leia, wich may have less dependencies issues, but I can’t find any binaries for Debian and checking the compiling process on github was terrifying.
Any idea of how I could manage to install it ? Maybe some appimage lying around ?
