I have a Macbook 13″ 2008 with UK keyboard layout similar to:
https://www.macworld.co.uk/cmsdata/features/3504584/Mac-Keyboard_thumb800.jpg
As you can see, there is no visible hash # key so how do I type it?
The system keyoard is set to Mac laptop, GB UK layout. None of the obvious key combinations produce the # character.
I could insert it from LibreOffice Writer, then copy and paste it but that is a major hassle.
I tried Lxkeymap, and installed xbindkeys plus the xbindkeys-config GUI but those apps are not intuitive and as clear as mud.
So how do I map the <Alt> and <3> keys to produce the # character?

::You may be able to change to other keyboard layouts using setxkbmap.
Not having a similar system I am unable to answer more directly.September 29, 2021 at 3:07 pm #68074Memberwatsoccurring

I would try:
Ctrl + Shift + U then type 0023September 29, 2021 at 4:49 pm #68080Memberstarnutter
::I appreciate the speedy responses.
Left <Alt> + <3> —> No visible character when typed into Geany editor.
Right <Alt> + <3> —> Produces a small 3, in algebra it is the 3 written in the top right of “X cubed” or “X to the power of 3”.
<Ctrl> + <3> —> No visible character when typed.
Switching keyboard models to “MacBook/MacBook Pro (intl.)” solved the problem. Many thanks ModdIt and watsoccurring.
I had previously missed this keyboard model in the keyboard selector app because the keyboard list has an irregular and somewhat random sorted order.
Now, in order to produce the # character:
Right <Alt> + <3> —> #
On a related matter, does any one know how to associate the media key functions? I know that with some other Linux distros, the media keys are automatically setup if the machine or keyboard can be identified.

Each of the window managers {JWM,IceWM,fluxbox} consults an editable plaintext “keys” configuration file, ala
~/.jwm/keys
~/.icewm/keys
~/.fluxbox/keys
Within each of these preinstalled files, you will likely find #outcommented lines describing howto set keybinds for your media keys. Additional details are provided in the doc//manpage of each of the window managers . -
