Edit the desktop file (as you did)

Then, in the main menu, click on Update or Refresh Menu

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

I understand now. You mean the start button on the left of the taskbar.

I already have sound, just one minor issue. Maybe there’s a solution.

If I run Seamonkey thru Menu -> Applications -> Internet -> Seamonkey , I have sound.

If I run Seamonkey by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Space and typing seamonkey and pressing enter, I don’t have sound.

        Any ideas?

        Thank you!

If I run Seamonkey by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Space and typing

            apulse seamonkey

            and pressing enter,

            there is sound.

I guess that’s the best solution outside of Menu -> Applications -> Internet -> Seamonkey ?

            Thank you!

You could set seamonkey as default browser in control centre > Preferred apps.

Then, the browser in the main menu should open seamonkey. Same with the browser on the taskbar

I don’t suppose you have a solution for Tor Browser with no sound? It was downloaded from Tor’s website, extracted to the hard drive’s NTFS partition, and it could run from there, just no sound.

Even if I extracted it to /home/user and run it from there, still no sound.

If there’s no solution it’s ok.

                  Thank you.

by the way, in Debian, it has sound in both the NTFS partition and in /home/user directory.

I think you still don’t understand the problem.
antiX uses ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) to manage sound. It is very lightweight and efficient, but on most other distros has been replaced with pulseaudio, which is heavier, and “bloatier” but gives some extra options you don’t have with ALSA.
Nowadays most browsers “expect” to find pulseaudio on your linux system, so out of the box they don’t work with ALSA. To solve this issue, apulse was developed to “translate” for the browsers so that it communicates with ALSA. That is why you executed “apulse name-of-browser” so that the browser “uses” apulse to “play” sound.
If you don’t want to do this for each and every browser/app, you could always install pulseaudio and use it instead, but don’t expect for audio/pulseaudio help in the forums as it isn’t the official antiX “sound engine”. And all antiX official programs like Sound Card Chooser, Adjust Mixer or any other Sound related program located in the antiX Control Center will NOT work with pulseadudio (instead you will need to use pavucontrol for your sound settings)

                    Getting pulseaudio in your system:

                    1. Installing pulseaudio:
                    Open a terminal and execute
                    sudo apt-get install pulseaudio pavucontrol

                    2. Make pulseaudio launch on startup
                    Edit startuo file
                    geany ~/.desktop-session/startup
Add a line that launches pulseaudio

                    #launch pulseaudio Daemon on startup
                    pulseaudio -D &

                    Save and exit

                    3. Making volume-icon use pulseaudio (and manage volume and properties)
right-click the volume icon in your systray and click on Preferences.
Have External mixer execute pavucontrol. It originally says:
                    External mixer desktop-defaults-run -t alsamixer
                    Replace it with:
                    External mixer pavucontrol

Reboot your system. From this moment on, you will no longer need to add “apulse” to your commands for any pulseaudio dependent browsers/programs.

I get it now. I got sound if I execute this line in terminal:

                      apulse ./start-tor-browser.desktop

                      Many thanks!

Sound was working with SeaMonkey, Firefox, music files, and Youtube last night. Now no sound at all. I went through all your detailed instructions again, and reboot number of times. What happened?

We cannot know. When you launch pavucontrol (from menus or with command
                            pavucontrol
and go to “Output devices” tab, is it correctly selected? Is it muted?
If you move back to “Playback” tab, Do you see Firefox/Seamonkey (whatever program) there? Is it using the correct Output device? Is it muted?

                              Hi Xecure,
Yes, it works now. Launched pavucontrol with command, Selected Output Devices, Front Left & Right sliders displayed, and can move back & forth.
Launched Control Center, selected Hardware, and Test Sound. All good!

Just curious as to why the audio crashed in the first place. I didn’t do anything out of the ordinary. Launched SeaMonkey, played some videos. Then launched Chrome and played some videos. That’s when the audio crashed. Thoughts? Thanks again!

See what is the order of startup commands in Control Centre > Session > User Desktop-session > startup
pulseaudio should be above the volumeicon entry. If not, move it, save and reboot just to see if now works properly as soon as it boots.

Yes, I made sure that order of startup commands in Control Centre > Session > User Desktop-session > startup
pulseaudio is above the volumeicon entry. Saved and rebooted. Works great in both SeaMonkey and Chrome or any browser.

Thanks again & Have a good weekend!
