My headphone did not work after installing. Launching Test Sound from the Control Center showed that everything was working fine. Nevertheless I could’nt get it to work by adjusting the mixer, only after installing pulseaudio things were fine.

That can be generalized. If you’re having trouble with sound in any software or hardware give pulseaudio a try.
