I just discovered that the heic image files created by iphones will not open in antiX 19 with Mirage.
I wondering what people are using to open these image files in antiX.

From what I understand, install this package: heif-gdk-pixbuf

I found the solution on this page:
        https://superuser.com/questions/1252004/how-can-i-view-heic-photos-on-linux

I verified that it IS in the debian repos.

Theoretically, once installed, it should just work. (I don’t have any heic/heif photos to test it on.)

(EDIT: It’s in antiX-21 repos; apparently not 19. See next post. Sorry.)

That package is not available for antiX 19 (buster).

          GIMP supports HEIC.

You could also change the settings in iPhone:

Go to Settings on your iPhone.
Tap Camera. You will be shown some options like Formats, Grid, Preserve Settings, and Camera Mode.
Tap Formats, and change the format from High Efficiency to Most Compatible.
Now all your photos will be automatically saved as JPG instead of HEIC.

This has been bugging me for a while so I looked into it some more.

Install imlib2-heic, and you can use FEH to open .heic images. FEH is a lot quicker to open files with than GIMP.

If you are using ROX-filer then you can right click on a heic image file, select “set run action” and paste “feh -F –auto-rotate –start-at “$@”” in the “enter a shell command” textbox. Now when you left click on heic images they will automatically open in feh.

The forum changed – – to –, should be – – but with no space inbetween.

              @blur13

              Thanks for the instructions.

I do not find imlib2-heic in Synaptic Package Manager for antiX 19.

                https://github.com/vi/imlib2-heic/releases/download/v0.1.0/imlib2-heic_0.1.0-1_amd64.deb

cd to the directory and install it using sudo apt install ./imlib2-heic_0.1.0-1_amd64.deb

I guess I should throw in a warning about how, since its not maintained by debian, there are no security checks or updates. But if you’re not too bothered by that then this is a good solution.

Thank you for the added instructions. I have questions below:

I am not using ROX-filer. I am using Space file manager and Ice window manager with antiX 19. Will this work like it does with ROX?

When you say “cd to the directory”, which directory are you referring to.

                    Hi greyowl,

you cd into the directory you download the package to in a terminal.

Sorry I wasnt very clear. I’m never sure how much detail to include. Like linuxdaddy said, cd into the directory you downloaded the deb file to. Usually it would be Downloads. The “./” is shorthand for “current directory”. You could also write out the whole path to the deb file. I dont use Space myself so not sure if it supports shell scripts like Rox does. You can always run feh -F –auto-rotate –start-at name.of.image.heic in the terminal. -F is for fullscreen, autorotate, well, rotates, and start-at loads all the images in the folder so you can use the left and right arrows to go to the next/previous image in the folder. Up/down zooms in/out. Holding down control key allows panning of image with the arrow keys.

Thank you for the further instructions.

It is working like a charm. 🙂
