      Hi,
I’ve been using Linux since Ubuntu 07.04, but I’m new to Anti-x. I want to try reviving a Dell mini netbook I bought in 2009. It copes with Lubuntu – just, but I really don’t need so much on it. I have a Nextcloud server with OpenOffice working nicely alongside it, and I can access my email via webmail (Sogo), so all I really need is an OS and a browser.
The plan is that the netbook will be my travel machine when I do a cycling tour up to Yorkshire in the summer. Today, I’m putting an ssd in it, then, if that works out, I’ll start experimenting with Anti-x. If that all goes well, I’ll invest in a new battery and it will be a successful project.
I tend to hammer forums a bit when I’m playing with new software. I ask for your patience.

        Hi welcome to antiXia,
Any device which will run buntu should be fine with antiX, it is different so take your time to explore.
The easiest desktops to start with are either ice or customised fluxbox, the scripting work of PPC is a
big help there. FT10 transformation, like aladins lamp for linux.

          Hi danceswithcats -Welcome to antiX!

Please, just be more careful with the distro’s name – it’s spelled with a “a” and an capital “X” on the end, no “-“! The Dev team likes when people use the correct name (and rightly so).
Other than that, like Moddit said – antiX should run way better than Lubuntu – less idle RAM, less idle CPU usage.
The interface menu and toolbar is very reminiscent of Windows 98- that’s why Moddit suggested that you could install the package “ft10-transformation” (and enable the FT10 toolbar and menu from the Preferences sub-menu in the antiX menu)- it was made to ease people transition to antiX, specially if coming from Windows 10, but it makes antiX behave a bit more users of modern OS’s expect it should. It’s not perfect, but it gets the job done 🙂
The sticky posts (some written by me) also help people learn how to do basic tasks in antiX, since it sometimes works very differently from what people expect…

          P.

                Olá Marcelocripe
                Isso Ă© Ăłptimo.
Correu tudo bem.

                That’s great.
It’s all gone well. I got it installed and I’ve been poking around with a couple of desktops – the main reason I wanted to try antiX was that I was interested in using Fluxbox. I’ve used Enlightenment on Bodhi linux, a long while ago, and so it’s not such a leap for me. There are a few glitches, but they seem to be the result of having so much choice – it’s the same situation with kde. After Gnome, the configuration choices seem overwhelming, but also a lot of fun.
Thanks to everyone involved. I am looking forward to getting to know it more deeply over the coming weeks.

@danceswithcats – I also used Bodhi for some time – it’s a great OS, perhaps the best Ubuntu available, specially if you consider it’s low resource usage!
If you want to make antiX prettier, try installing and activating ft10-transformation – you can take a look at the ft10 thread to see what it does and how it looks – I developed, initially FT10 to run on Fluxbox (that’s where the “F” from “FT10” comes from).

Side note- using online translators has some problems (something Marcelo knows well) – for example, Deepl translated “desktop” (meaning desktop computer) to something similar to “Tops of the desks” 🙂

“Tops of the desks” is rather lovely. 🙂
I will definitely have a go with FT10. I have located it in the install program and look forward to experimenting. I can’t find the thread just now, but I did find your description of installing antiX on a netbook that sounds very like mine. My main frustration at the moment is that I have remembered how terrible the trackpad on my little Dell is. With a mouse, it’s a beautiful machine and antiX is doing everything I want on it, but the idea was to take it with me on cycling trips, and carrying a mouse as well is an extra bit of nuisance.
Anyway, when I next have a day off, I will play around with FT10 and also look up keyboard shortcuts.
For now, thanks again. It’s a really unique thing you’re doing. I hope you are all proud of your work.
I’ll speak to you again soon.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

Peter (Danceswithcats) I thank you for your kindness in including the machine translation for me. Machine translations are often misleading and even confusing, sometimes they are completely incomprehensible, even when they are performed by different translation programs. But this is the only way I can communicate with other people who speak a language other than mine. For safety, and to avoid any misunderstanding that might be caused by the automatic translation, I include my original text, if necessary, any misunderstanding can be cleared up by a bilingual person.

I hope you can make good use of the tutorials that PPC has created, they were very important to me when I arrived here on the forum and on antiX.

PPC’s FT10 is another fantastic solution created by PPC, among many others that you can find in the antiX full ISO.

About Bodhi Linux, I tried to use this operating system, but without the help and technical support of the most experienced, it is simply impossible for a beginner in GNU/Linux to be able to use Bodhi or any other GNU/Linux or BSD distribution. Unlike this forum, where most people are friendly, respect each other, respect other people who have difficulties and mainly help other people by sharing their knowledge. In addition to being one of the few forums that accepted me, even without me knowing how to read and write in English.

This topic System Requirements for antiX and other Debians, lists some distributions that I tested, before getting here on this forum to stay.

Fluxbox has 4 ready-made configurations that are available in the full ISO, in case you haven’t found it yet, go to Menu, Desktop, Other Desktop, you will see Rox-Fluxbox, zzz-Fluxbox (this is the one that behaves most similarly to Windows XP), Fluxbox and Mini-Fluxbox (this is the one that consumes less resources).

And the last guideline in this post, whenever you ask for help on this forum, tell the ISO you installed of antiX on your computer and post the command output in the $inxi -Fxz terminal.

                          – – – – –
