Hello. I have used Antix live in the past, but this is the first time I have installed it. My daily distro has been a mixture of Debian, Devuan and Void in recent years; I have used Void every day for a few years, but have been looking for a backup alternative to run on a second computer.

It has only been a few days, but so far so good. I hate the all Desktop Environments, and use Openbox alongside Lxterminal, Tint2, etc. I also prefer to dispense with a Display Manager [eg slimski], and login from tty1, and “startx”.

I chose the Runit option as I am familiar with it from Void. I am a minimalist at heart, and always try to remove packages and services that I don’t need. As Antix evolves, I will have to work out how to live with new versions; Void is a rolling distro.

          Hello picamanic.

Welcome to antiX Linux and the Forum.

I don’t know how to write in English and send my texts translated by the internet translator. I hope you can understand everything. If your native language is not English, please translate my original Portuguese language text in Brazil directly into your language with the help of internet translators that you will get a much better result.

Regardless of your level of knowledge about GNU/Linux, I recommend you read these excellent tutorials created by @PPC:

What is antiX and how to try it out or install it.
Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie.
          How-to install applications – 2020 version.
How to: correctly use antiX forum.

When I started using Antix, I read the tutorials that the PPC created, these readings spared me a lot of my time and I think it saves the time of any new Antix user. Your time will not be lost with these readings, it will seem to be much easier than you could imagine. You will not waste your time with internet searches or even create new topics, on the contrary, you will earn a lot of time from these readings. I recommend you try the work areas that have “ZZZ” in your name. I usually use the “ZZZ-Icewm” or “ZZZ-JWM” or “ZZZ-Fluxbox” (each of these work areas have their own characteristics and consume more or less resources). ZZZFM will be the default file manager in your desktop, it is very similar to other file managers from other GNU/Linux distributions and Windows XP. To access the other Antix work areas, click the Antix menu (or right -click), desktop, switch between desktops and click on the work area name, instantly to desktop will be loaded.

In the Portuguese language area of this forum, there are several tutorials that may be useful for you . Use an automatic translator from the internet so you can understand the text.

Whenever you need to request technical help or support in this forum, explain in detail what is happening, do not save the words, be thorough when writing, enter the characteristics of your computer, such as the brand and the model. If possible, post the result of the command $ Inxi -zv7 of the terminal, copy and paste here in the message of the topic you create in this forum.

When you start a topic or participate with a post, remember to check the option “Notify Me of Follow-Up Replies via email”, marking this option, you will receive a message in your email box whenever there are answers from topic in question.

What is antiX and how to try it out or install it.
Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie.
          How-to install applications – 2020 version.
How to: correctly use antiX forum.

Warm greetings and welcome to the antiX Forum picamanic.

I see that a couple of our members have already greeted you and our Portuguese antiX advocate, Marcelo Cripe has already demonstrated that people all over the world actually CAN communicate thanks to the technology of language translation! It’s not “perfect”, and when people (particularly Americans) use “slang” terms – words that do not easily translate into other spoken languages and/or the actual “meaning” is lost. Other than that, we do rather well in many ways, sharing what we do know and how to make good use of our systems and technology.

Another thing that I’d like to bring up as we are sharing introductions: we come from so many different cultures, habits and interests. I hope that the majority of us will actually ENJOY and celebrate the rich cultural differences that we have. Usually it is our governments who argue and wage war, but the “average person”, no matter where they live and no matter what “customs” and practices they follow, most care about the well being of others.

During the course of my working career in technology, I can tell you honestly and with enthusiasm that the most interesting aspects of my work, once I passed the first few years, were the people I met, the differences we had, and the way we could share, actually enjoying learning about the different ways we live instead of fighting over who has the best this or that. I’ve enjoyed many “colors of the rainbow”, many ethnic differences, and though I’ll always practice what I know and I am familiar with, it doesn’t mean that I don’t appreciate others – I GENUINELY DO, and it’s always great to welcome another person here and share the very distinct differences of our small but gifted distribution and the forum that goes along with it.

May we always appreciate the differences and wonders all around each one of us!

How do you go about doing this? What are the benefits? I thought a DM was indispensable.

I hate the all Desktop Environments, and use Openbox alongside Lxterminal, Tint2, etc.

That’s why antiX does not include any Desktop Environments, only window managers. There’s a preconfigured tint2 toolbar and jgmenu available in the package ft10-transformation, but I think you would consider that somewhat bloated.
IceWM, specially in antiX 23 is so feature rich and easily configurable that it can be mistaken for a D.E. (it has GUI’s to manage the toolbar, the wallpaper, and everything in between).

Edit: long ago, I tested Openbox- I liked it, but since antiX already comes with several WM so well configured, I think I never tried to install it in antiX. but I think there’s a spin of antiX that uses Openbox.

                  P.

The original antiX came with Fluxbox. I recommended that we include IceWM and make it the default and have veterans configure other window managers. We’ve added JWM and herbstluftwm as additional options, and other window managers and even desktop environments are available in Debian repositories for those who want to configure something else on their own.

IceWM is the standard antiX window environment today with the most actively customized features. It’s also well maintained on the Internet.

Our Package Installer does include both LXDE and LXQT along with several other basic desktop environment configurations. The LX* desktops typically come equipped with Openbox, so you can get it there or from the Debian repositories.

Welcome picamanic, regarding rolling release, antiX is somewhere in between stable and rolling,
to get nearer to true rolling you can change your debian repos to testing, or if you want to live on
                        the wild side experimental.

You can also install a bunch of latest packages from the antiX pacvkage installer. Latest available for debian
antiX that is. For some packages you may wish to lok at unpacked appimage usage.

Testing is more stable than some major distros, been running that way for months without major issues.
MMMMM nearly a year now. Plus antiX 23 Beta which is very nice.

Regarding “dispense with a Display Manager and login from tty1, and “startx”, this used to be the default method in the early days, and for quite a few years many Slackware configurations, even those with a graphical user environment would still default to a command line; I’m sure there are still specific builds that continue to use this approach. While those of us used to going directly into a GUI, only having to login, then specify a single command isn’t all that difficult; it’s handy if sometimes you WANT to start in the console and sometimes start in the GUI, but if it bothers you, it’s easy to overcome it by putting a startx command directly into the login shell or a super convenient alias command.

I am glad that you are able to understand me through the machine translation texts and that we can communicate. If these automatic translation programs continue to evolve, maybe one day we will have robots like C-3PO from the Star Wars film series, which according to fiction, is a “fluent interpreter and social relations fluent in 6 million media” . As you always say here on the forum, with respect between people and each one respecting the difficulties or limitations of other people, this community is the friendliest and each time with a greater diversity of people from all parts of planet Earth . In fact, I am a supporter of antiX Linux in Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese/Portugal, but antiX also has to be translated into as many languages as possible, because only then will antiX be useful to all people in the world. planet Earth.

Usually it is our governments who argue and wage war, but the “average person”, no matter where they live and no matter what “customs” and practices they follow, most care about the well being of others.

And once again your words are inspiring and portray very well what I understand to be true for myself and for other Brazilians.

The original antiX came with Fluxbox…

Thank you very much for telling us a little more about the “History of antiX Linux”, now I have saved this important part of the story in my notes.

Usually it is our governments who argue and wage war, but the “average person”, no matter where they live and no matter what “customs” and practices they follow, most care about the well being of others.

@Marcelo: Both R2D2 and C3PO desired to bring fairness, and eventually peace to the Galaxy.

Isn’t it “ironic” that it wasn’t the “Republic”, it was the “Rebels”, who sought to return things to their natural and peaceful form, and that in order to do that, a twin brother and sister (who didn’t even realize they were twins) ended up fighting with their own father, only to eventually realize that he was their father? Moreover, the father also realized his yearning for more power and influence only brought darkness to his soul, and it was only when he sacrificed his own life that he was reunited with the spirit of the leadership he once honored and respected?

Even friends and family do not always agree, but when we nevertheless work together with a spirit of caring and cooperation, overall we achieve a lot more good than harm. It is only when selfish ambition and greed get in the way that we all suffer. Most of us realize these things in our hearts, yet even some of the best of us waver at times. I’m so thankful that in spite of our geographical, language, racial, political and other differences, that this organization, for the most part, sees beyond the futility of the nonsense I mention above and we instead work together with the common aim of making a few simple things better.

It’s a great honor to collaborate in this way and I thank each of you who have similar thoughts, goals, and simple aspirations to share rather than to seek the Emperor’s quest for “Unlimited POWER!” I’m much more interested in kindness, fun, and caring! Blessings to all who share that kind of spirit!
