      Hello All,

What a day – first ticked that saned to add it to group – it made no difference after desktop restart and a reboot so I removed it from the list. Have to admit that I was getting a little disheartened – tried logging in under default RoxIcewm to no avail – “no scanner detected.”
Tried another reboot but this time arrowed down to boot with the old kernel as I suspected there might be an issue with latest kernel.
I made sure the printer-scanner’s Wi-Fi was connected and its USB cable was plugged in to give best chance of scan app finding it. Graphics seemed to be slightly different and the scanner window was smaller but guess what – there was “Ready to Scan” but it would not scan – displaying a message about the doc feeder being empty even though it has no feeder – it is a flatbed on top of the printer. After selecting “multiple flatbed scans” it worked and then was able to select single scan – Phew 🙂 I was mentally exhausted but refused to give – up.

To prove a point I rebooted once more this time accepting the latest default kernel so that I could show that the scanner still could not be detected. Drat – it worked fine first time out.

I am therefore unable to explain what had been reset, changed or configured under the old kernel that allowed under booting to the latest kernel for it to work, having defied all previous attempts by me under the guidance of our forum. Perhaps it is a tiny bug? If there any terminal commands, user files etc that you guys require I will gladly assist 🙂 see screenshots in chronological order.

kindest regards to all – you can now relax as the old fool has now got a fully functional old but fast HP laptop with AntiX-22 LXDE desktop and other WMs.

Guess I can now proceed to try and break my mini-MAX branded desktop with digital streaming TV or video editing. For the first time ever; I opened 20 Ffox tabs using from 500 to 680MiB RAM depending on live tab content. So that was a non-test 🙂 Even playing a web page embedded video only uses 800MiB and that is with Terminal, Gimp and Libre Office Writer loaded ready to rock’n’roll 🙂

        What a day

        – good day.
But the solution remains somehow strange. There is now no clear concept that can be offered next time for someone in the same situation.Congratulations on your persistence.

Since we have a solution, but we’re still not 100% positive which activity led to the sudden solution, let me guess that temporarily adding the saned group enabled something in the hardware initialization to “take place”, in spite of the fact that saned is NOT required once the detection and initialization occurs naturally. This is a guess too, but lacking a better explanation, that variable seems to make sense.

Exactly why this helps or helped is unclear. Anyone who is positive they know what’s happening can feel free to explain it to everyone; to me, that appears to be one temporary change that made a difference.

Sorry Brian; this is definitely not the case – After removing saned and logging back into LXDE and rebooted it still was not detecting the scanner. It succeeded in finding it first by rebooting using the old kernel 4.9.0-326 – see first screenshot above.

            Cheers

Please come up with a better explanation since the one I suggested is so clearly incorrect.

I already did that – it has to do with the kernel

Do you not accept that after including and then removing “saned” followed by logging into different WM then back into LXDE and rebooting several times it still could not detect my scanner? Do you not accept chronological sequence of screenshots – I included the date and time to the second for this reason..? Cheers

Quite so – suppose it is as annoying and frustrating for you guys as it is for me.

BTW here is screenshot proof of ….

Also PPC wrote “And you miss interpreted a screen shot of a system running some 20 tabs open in Firefox…”

NO – I did not misinterpret Ft10-Trans – I have a good idea of what uses resource – even with many open tabs – 20 you say? See Below

This reminds me a bit of the behaviour of my SCSI connected scanner… It is also not found by none of the methods described and suggested to Andy in this thread, when not plugged and powered up on boot time already. When only powering up later, while the PC is running already, it wouldn’t be found, and SimpleScan comes up with exactly the very message.

I know a workaround for this, but since your’s isn’t a SCSI connected scanner, I didn’t mention this before:
I have always to install scsi-utils package from the repos and feed the included command rescan-scsi-bus in terminal. Only then the scanner will be recognised when not powered already at boot time.

So did you observe, whether your device was powered during boot time when it worked all of a sudden? In this case the advice caprea gave you already some postings above might apply:

Another thing that might be worth trying is to create an udev rule for the scanner.

This could make the system aware when the scanner is plugged only later to your system, just equivalent to what I have to do manually for the scsi-scanner by entering the rescan command. I don’t know a way how to invoke a rescan for USB devices manually the same way the rescan-scsi-bus command does for the SCSI scanner. But I believe it is just as caprea said: This should be handled automatically by udev for USB devices.

                    Just a guess…

                    Kind Regards
                    Robin

Hi Robin and thanks again for your time…

Sorry I can’t give a definitive answer to the USB printer cable being connected at the time of reboot – though I can confirm that I did try that trick some days back to no avail.

I can’t say if it was USB connected when I booted up using the old kernel 4.9.0 but made 100% sure USB and Wi-Fi were connected before clicking simple-scan and then overjoyed to see “Ready to Scan”.

I do not know if the screenshot below is of any use to you? see time and date 🙂 8th Nov.

                      kindest regards – Andy

I respect my elders, Mr. Andy, but you are lucky that this forum has so many good people willing to help out, other than me, since this is the last time I reply to any of your posts.

First of all could I thank our Έλληνες (Hellenic) friend for making the wonderful LXDE environment work so well under AntiX-22 and for keeping it going. For me it is the best OS+desktop I have used thus far.

Regardless of my rudimentary test finding that antiX + LXDE appears to have significantly larger memory footprint than stock antiX + IceWM or JWM, the above quote from your prior post appears to indicate that LXDE works very nicely with antiX in your experience. As I understand LXDE is your strong favorite among lightweight DE’s, which conviction I think I understand.

Also the above quote from your post appears to also credit your such successful creating a ‘perfect’ OS+desktop WM to a ‘Hellenic friend’, from which I infer you likely refer to anticapitalista himself as antiX creator from Greece. A bit of uncertainty is introduced by plural ‘Έλληνες’ vs. singular ‘friend’ though…

One way or the other it looks to me you created a perfect (in your experience) OS+Desktop combination, which is light, efficient and all appears to work to your satisfaction.
I might experiment with such combination of OS/DE out of curiosity myself, considering that anticapitalista has opened such possibility by developing a solution without the necessity to include libelogind0, making LXDE more friendly to antiX 22.

Hi Olsztyn – Please excuse my bad manners in not getting back to you sooner as you have posted here before – have been so tied up with the scanner issue. So glad to read your very positive attitude to make AntiX LXDE even more efficient and faster. Fantastic – thank you 🙂

So you have been around on this forum for four years so you know way more than I about antiX variations and releases than I do. I believe most serious AntiX users on this thread know exactly what the RAM is for all variants and know what you can whittle down in LXDE – some are very subtle in how they portray their results.

                                https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/antix-screenys-general/page/25/#post-84469

Perhaps you can shed some light (explain) that rather than lower the RAM usage we can see additions made to the panel to increase RAM usage! Then there is the simple remedy to clear leaking RAM issue. As you and I know those screenshots of WMs with around 100MiB RAM are little more than a graphic. So if we want to save some RAM in LXDE reduce….

….. perhaps you and I can start a new friendly topic under the “Tips & Tricks” category? 🙂 This could help new users with old low CPU-RAM computers to get up and running quickly with an ultra light efficient desktop. Then other more experienced and more knowledgeable forum members could contribute which may encourage our Hellenic friend to keep this desktop option going. Pity it is not supported at present as it works so well under AntiX.

You are correct about our Hellenic friend – It is my understanding that the people of Greece or Hellas do not like to be referred to as Greeks hence I was was trying to be polite, respectful and courteous. I have loved my Hellenic experiences.
As most Hellenic rural people are devoutly religious; they know little of their legends, myths, heroes etc – My mother used to recount these shocking stories to them in their language….! For me; my hero is Archimedes and the Ancient school of Mechanica – real engineers still applicable today to the surprise of my students or anyone else who will listen to the old fool 🙂

I digress – with my full monty AntiX-22 that I am currently running so efficiently and fast on this old HP G60 laptop – I have no need to get below 150MiB with LO and Gimp installed. At present if I log out of my LXDE session and then login under default Rox-Icewm it uses slightly more RAM plus there are issues – windows minimize, maximise and close have no icons displayed. There you have it; two tests on the same machine with same base OS and apps installed, within a couple of minutes of each other. See screenshots below 🙂

IMHO it does not matter which environment members use – each to their own. If they choose to load up with RAM consuming bloat and become like a Lotus Elise towing a caravan or an RV with a kitchen sink; so be it – no comment 🙂
Mathematically I think ‘twixt LXDE and those WMs there may be about 40MiB difference at idle so if we take my old HP’s 3000MiB (3GiB) of installed RAM this represents a tiny 1% as makes no difference. Still for the sake of efficiency, fun of it, dispelling myths, whatever; shall we proceed…? 🙂

Just to make sure to be clear:

                                  – Regarding experimentation with LXDE/antiX: I stated I might spend some time experiment further but rather for a different reason than yours. My objective would be to replace many components of LXDE, such as PCMfm, with antiX stock ones, which seem more advanced, such as SpaceFM/zzzFM. Possibly also replace openbox with JWM.
However I must decline to start a thread on such effort. Such task is not my priority. I have better things to do.

                                  – Personally I strongly suggest you stop referring to anticapitalista as your ‘Hellenic friend’, assuming you are indeed referring to anticapitalista. If you feel, as you expanded in your digression, that this is the best and most polite way to refer to anticapitalista, I must mention that although in Greek language such expression would assume a significant degree of familiarity, in English on the contrary it does not covey the same meaning. You must refer to anticapitalista with due respect as dictated by the language of your post. Therefore if you insist to stick to the terminology such as ‘Hellenic friend’ in reference to anticapitalista, then you must write your entire post in Greek language and carefully chose words including their proper case, declension and conjugation to ensure proper grammar, in order to convey such meaning more precisely. I suppose this should not present a major issue for you to write in Greek, as you you already used a Greek word in your prior post, although in plural rather than singular. I am looking forward to your posts in Greek then…

                                  – As much as the topic of LXDE + antiX is interesting in itself, your various digressions to unrelated and immaterial to the subject matters makes it difficult to focus on details and process to accomplish such task. I suggest we do stick to material information and progress in resolving issues rather than digressions and attracting attention to unrelated to the topic matters, such as relating travels to parts of Greece. I had traveled to Greece myself and in fact bought a small piece of land in Greece some time ago but I would not make such immaterial digression to distract from the topic.

                                  – My conjecture is that anticapitalista has already looked at possibility of LXDE as an addition, judging from previously posting a process to installing LXDE and not including libelogind0, which means LXDE would be compatible with antiX 22. Since he spent the time to define the way to do it, he must have seriously looked at this.

Do not take these my comments personally. I just want to stick to the subject, as the project itself seems rather interesting and it would be a waste if participants of this forum quit contributing due to abundance of unrelated digressions overwhelming this subject.
