Good evening you wise guys / gals of the forum, you newbs and all the others.

I’m a pretty newb myself when it gets to linux, most young (under 20) would even say I’m a newb when it comes to computers.
Growing up with DOS, Win and got stuck in Win7 after taking years to switch from XP to 7.

With them new phones and what-not I thought it might be a good idea to see what’s going on. The news about Win11 and how I already couldn’t cope with 10 brought to me think about my past, as Dad was running RedHat alongside OS/2.
A bit of youtube, a bit of searching lead to try out a few distros.
MXLinux worked right out of the box with my old Dell Netbook here. It kinda did what I wanted it to do, so I installed it and already had some woes with it (thanks to the MX Forum for the help).
A moderator suggested to give AntiX a try.

Well, so I did, here I am, and I have to admit it is running pretty awesome, though I don’t feel as at home as with MX – and I can’t put my finger on why.
      This is why I’m here.

Hope this little text was informative and a bit amusing, I bet we’ll see us in the next “help me my xxx is doing yyy wile zzz is up in flames” thread.

here a little info about the machine
hope the BBcodes are working, as it’s a bit weird compared to MX-Forum

      Cheers Julian

Info removed as I always get an error message.

Yeah, as soon as I try to send with inxi report it says
“unsave operation detected” and blocks posting.

Btw, why can’t I change my avatar?

              Julian,

              What is the file extension?

If there is none, put it in a .zip file or insert the text in the message (use the B-QUOTE button then /B-QUOTE).

              If it helps.

              Vive antiX !

                Why file extension?
I copy paste the terminal result here and set it in code brackets – that’s what it’s there for, isn’t it?

                testing code

                testing b quote

I rather think it’s something in the inxi results, that causes the forum to panic.
Speaking of panic, where would be the best place to get myself some air for rambling / complaining about quirks I found / I found are strange.
                like buttons not working
                windows to large
                stuff doing random things

all nothing major, but after the weeks now I still get confused by it, and wonder why things are the way they are.

Also, please read the forum’s sticky posts (some started by me) that can be helpful when a new user comes to antiX- This OS can do almost anything other distros do, but sometimes in a very different way. I found no buttons that did not work in antiX, and I’ve been using it for over 6 years now… I would go with what’s known as the “Apple defense” – “you’r using it wrong” 🙂

Quirks, this OS has many- ence the name, that sounds like “antics” – but I found no other full blow distro (by this I mena no tiny core, puppy linux, etc) that runs almost as well on a 32bits laptop and a quadcore desktop- with the right office suit, the right browser and the right media player, antiX works wonders even in the weakest hardware…

                    P.

😀 haha, yeah that’s exactly what came to my mind.
I read some of your posts already, and browsed through some of dolphins videos.
I think in there were already a few things that stopped my right in my tracks.

puppy linux was the very first i tried, but couldn’t get some things running and i was ported back into my past were all the things annoying me with linux came back up.

i think i first have to make my mind up what I actually want to achieve with this laptop, than turning the right screws will be a breeze.

What’s REALLY NICE about antiX is that you can start with a really efficient system, but if you have a reasonably powerful system and you want to add a few powerful features antiX provides the tools and capabilities to do whatever you want, as long as you learn and apply what you learn to customizing your system to suit your personal needs, or you can play it safe and stay with the defaults.

A great idea is to create the initial system and SAVE it on USB.

Then put it on an SSD or HDD and experiment; if you mess up, REINSTALL with the USB and try again and again until you are successful!

I had a decade or two of UNIX experience when I got into Linux. On the UNIX systems our development team happened to use a LOT of GNU utilities and that further eased my personal transition to Linux.

The third thing that helped me was that I read as many things as possible before venturing into Linux systems and rightly so because purchasing a decent computer, even a desktop, cost between $2000-3000.

I found a good one for around $2500 and spent another $200-300 on books and my first high speed home network!

All of them are much less expensive today but back then it was like 2-3 mortgage payments!

Excellent advice from rantanplan and masinick.

@masinick, fortunately, a good Linux box doesn’t cost $2000 to $3000 USD anymore.

Yeah, that’s for sure; I had to save a LONG time back then; I’m retired now, that would put me 100% out of the market for new systems; as it is, I usually either get something near the end of a sales cycle or during a major sale; ~$400 is about the top price I can handle; $200-300 is a much more favorable purchase; free is even better; some of my old gear are free acquisitions that others with money were ready to TOSS, if you can believe it?

                              Hello argonaut459.

Welcome to antiX Linux and the forum.

I don’t know how to write in English and I send my texts translated by the internet translator. I hope you can understand everything, if your native language is not English, please translate my original Brazilian Portuguese text directly into your language with the help of internet translators.

Regardless of your level of knowledge about GNU/Linux, I recommend you read these excellent tutorials created by @PPC:

What is antiX and how to try it out or install it.
Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie.
                              How-to install applications – 2020 version.
How to: correctly use antiX forum.

When I first started using antiX, I read the tutorials that PPC created, these readings saved me a lot of time and I think it saves time for any new antiX user. Your time will not be wasted with these readings, everything will seem to be much easier than you could imagine. You won’t waste your time searching the internet or even creating new topics, on the contrary, you will gain a lot of time with these readings.

I recommend you try out desktops that have “zzz” in their name. I usually use zzz-IceWM or zzz-JWM or zzz-Fluxbox (each of these desktops has its own characteristics and consumes more or less resources), zzzFM will be the default file manager for your desktop, it it is very similar to the other file managers of other GNU/Linux distributions and Windows XP. To access other antiX workspaces, click on Menu, Desktop, Other Desktops and click on the workspace name, instantly the workspace will be loaded.

Whenever you need to ask for help or technical support in this forum, please explain in detail what is happening, don’t mince words, be thorough when writing, tell your computer characteristics such as make and model. If possible, post the result of the command $ inxi -Fxz from the terminal, copy and paste here in the message of the topic that you are going to create in this forum.

When you start a topic or participate with a post, remember to check the option “Notify me of follow-up replies via email”, by checking this option, you will receive a message in your email box whenever there are replies from topic in question.

Independentemente do seu nĂvel de conhecimento sobre GNU/Linux, eu recomendo vocĂȘ ler estes excelentes tutoriais criados pelo @PPC:

What is antiX and how to try it out or install it.
Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie.

How to: correctly use antiX forum.

                                Hi argonaut469,
antiX is like many an old house house, a place full of tools, objects and
                                materials.
Once you work out how to get past the, its different phase and make your own
personal custom version out of it, in my opinion unbeatable.

Please do get used to making ISO Images of your system and when running live remastering
                                after bigger changes or updates.

If you run live and remaster changes but have no persistence setup you can explore experiment break things,
just reboot and you are back to work. Just save to live usb storage or other stick or internal disk.

If you want to live on the wild side run antiX sid. Its mostly harmless.

When windows do unexpected things it is usualy the application remembering last session.
Or a user who just switches off power instead of waiting a second or so for shutdown.

I have only ever had trouble with things not working correctly on a freshly installed users
