Actually I am old, my computer not so much! Last week I picked up an “obsolete” HP T620 Thin Client computer off eBay. Not a bad deal. It had a 16gb M2 2242 SSD and 4gb of memory. I’m used to Raspberry Pi’s so the challenge of using a low-spec machine was not so big, but which OS to use? I looked at my regular distros and none of them were suitable for this machine as I wanted to run a proper, fully-functional desktop. Then, quite randmomly I discovered Anti-X. It promised a lot and I was a bit sceptical but I loaded it up onto a USB stick and booted up the T620.

Well, I have to admit that I was blown away by the speed and power (of the OS), even on this slow machine, and I’ve decided to upgrade the SSD to a Transcend 128Gb and run Anti-X full time. I can’t believe the features on this distro – so impressive, and thanks to the developers for their work, I’m looking forward to being a regular visitor/cotributor here, so se ya later!

edit: I meant to add that peoples’ concept of “old” computers is interesting: mine was built in 2015 and 7 is not so old. They only wnt us to think that way!

          Hello T620user.

Welcome to antiX Linux and the forum.

I don’t know how to write in English and I send my texts translated by the internet translator. I hope you can understand everything, if your native language is not English, please translate my original Brazilian Portuguese text directly into your language with the help of internet translators.

Regardless of your level of knowledge about GNU/Linux, I recommend you read these excellent tutorials created by @PPC:

What is antiX and how to try it out or install it.
Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie.
          How-to install applications – 2020 version.
How to: correctly use antiX forum.

When I first started using antiX, I read the tutorials that PPC created, these readings saved me a lot of time and I think it saves time for any new antiX user. Your time will not be wasted with these readings, everything will seem to be much easier than you could imagine. You won’t waste your time searching the internet or even creating new topics, on the contrary, you will gain a lot of time with these readings.

I recommend you try out desktops that have “zzz” in their name. I usually use zzz-IceWM or zzz-JWM or zzz-Fluxbox (each of these desktops has its own characteristics and consumes more or less resources), zzz-FM will be the default file manager for your desktop, it it is very similar to the other file managers of other GNU/Linux distributions and Windows XP. To access other antiX workspaces, click on Menu, Workspace, Other Workspaces and click on the workspace name, instantly the workspace will be loaded.

Whenever you need to ask for help or technical support, post the output of the terminal command $ inxi -Fxz, copy and paste it in the message of the topic you are going to create in this forum.

When you start a topic or participate with a post, remember to check the option “Notify me of follow-up replies via email”, by checking this option, you will receive a message in your email box whenever there are replies from topic in question.

After this long introduction, T620user, indeed, antiX seems to be a GNU/Linux operating system from another planet. The configuration of the computer that you described is much superior to the configurations of the computers that I relive with antiX here in Brazil. We have many computers with around 1GB of DDR RAM (not DDR 2) and single-core processors. Just yesterday I revived a 64-bit Atom 425 with 2 GB of DDR 3 RAM, it manages to be slower than the 64-bit Pentium 4 with 1 GB of DDR RAM. The motherboard is terribly bad and the Atom 425 is always around 95% to 100% as per the system monitor of the rectangle closest to the system tray clock.

I’m looking forward to being a regular visitor/cotributor here, so if ya later!

We always need people interested in helping, we have several demands that need natives of several languages, whether in testing programs (scripts), translations, helping other users here on the forum, helping to develop and improve manuals and tutorials, etc. Any help is always very welcome.

What is antiX and how to try it out or install it.
Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie.
          How-to install applications – 2020 version.
How to: correctly use antiX forum.

I’m looking forward to being a regular visitor/cotributor here, so se ya later!

Thanks for the great intro – it really reflects the spirit of this community, Today I am setting up the T620 again (properly) now that I have read the links you sent me. The advice about using a zzz-desktop was very useful, and it has solved my problems here now.

Yes, I can see the problem – I think we tend to forget that not everyone has access to the same range of hardware, and this is why antiX is so good. My elderly relative has an Atom-based netbook which is still working but I had a lot of trouble finding an OS that would work on it.Unfortunately that was before I discovered antiX, but now I shall be upgrading her 🙂

I will spend this afternoon finishing the OS setup and will come back again over the coming weeks to share knowledge gained.

            Bye for now, Peter

Hi @T620user, welcome to the antiX forum and to antiX. If you’re anything like me you will soon find yourself putting antiX on everything you can find. It runs great on single-core with only 512MB of RAM and multi-core with 8GB of RAM and more. It also still fully supports 32-bit, unlike some of the other distros available today.

antiX is also very modifiable and if you are comfortable at the command line, or console, you will be able to massage it into working on just about any old computer with an intel x86 or x86-64 architecture. Not currently available for the RPi, although it’s sister distro, MX, has a version using Fluxbox that is starting to support RPi.

Peter, I’m glad you’ve read the PPC tutorials and enjoyed the PPC tips you’ve received and my tips. This community is just like that, one helps the other by sharing their knowledge with others. Soon it will be you who will be teaching me, because nobody knows everything.

Soon, another computer will have a new “life” with antiX.

I will spend this afternoon finishing the OS setup and will come back again over the coming weeks to share knowledge gained.

Tell us in detail what you think of antiX and what you did to customize the operating system to your liking.

                  name or term?
running antiX on a machine qualifies the machine as a rich-client.
