      Hello AntiX users,

An hour ago i registrated at the forum.
I was looking for linux usable for a very old eepc 701sd.
It has a SSD, but a 900 mhz processor.
Lubuntu was already to big, problems with hifi.
MX 32 bit was usable, also to big /slow.
Debian 32 bit was working, but also to havy. My sound card stopped working. Not solvable.
Then i saw antiX base 32 bit.
After installing it on the SSD it works fine.
Can use my eeepc as internetradio.
Starting a browser means 100% cpu till you minimize the browser window.
It has a nice sound with stereo speakers at both sides of the 840 x 400 screen.
      Only Debian recognises that.
Now i am installing antiX on a Dell Latitude d830. No problems, working fine.

      Best Whishes,

      Leo

        Welcome, Leolux!

I also found antiX to be the most lightweight out there. It has helped many in reviving old PCs.

If you have any questions let us know and we will try to help as best we can.

        Regards.

        antiX Live system enthusiast.

          Hi Leolux,

I had a few Dell models including the D series and I have an Inspiron 5558 now.
They work well with many Linux distributions.

Welcome to antiX and best wishes always.

Someone (not my expertise) should recommend what web browser (dillo?) would be usable on an eeePC

Hi, I did a quick search on the interweb (using duckduckgo.com):
This link (from 2019) suggests Midori and/or QuteBrowser (said to use vim keybindings), already available in the repositories; or to stick with FireFox but keep as little tabs open as possible.

I’ve used to run Linux on low-end PCs and I fell in love with text based browsers – Lynx/links2/elinks.
Works well with some news sites and dictionary at my home-country, speeds up loading the webpages and has minimal memory footprint.
My suggestion would be to try these text-based browsers and combine it with a richer one(s) (Midori, FF etc.) depending on what you plan to do.

I agree. Use a text browser for sites that do not require rich text, fancy content or HTML5.

I don’t know if either the Brave or Vivaldi Web browsers would be helpful but they may work for certain things. Palemoon is a browser that uses somewhat older technology than Firefox and it may help out for some sites. Waterfox is another Firefox derivative; not sure if it will provide a lighter footprint or not.

                    Hope you enjoy experimenting.

Not sure if all of the browsers I mentioned even support 32-bit processors. Check before downloading any of them. Sorry I didn’t think of that before mentioning them, but this is a reminder why some people have abandoned these older, fun systems.

Do let us know what works best. I do believe that antiX is among the few distributions that will work effectively with this hardware but it can still be a challenge. You have to conserve resources to get a good result.

                      Best wishes!
