      Hi there! I have 19.1-sid x64-core(Marielle Franco) frugal installed with grub entry and 5.5.0 kernel.I tried antiX-19.2-runit-sid_x64-core in usb.Runit-sid-core only boots in failsafe mode. So I tried to frugal install 19.2-runit-sid-core in failsafe mode.When I choose the frugal device (sda3) it boots into the existing 19.1 (Mariello Franco).The problem is display resolution is changed to 1024×768 in the existing 19.1. My display is LG19″ VGA with 1360×768 resolution.Now even when I boot through grub entry display remains at 1024×768 on 19.1 which has MATE desktop.I tried ‘xrandr’ it shows 1024×768 and lower resolutions only.Manually setting 1360×768 in ‘xrandr’ does not work.Also tried F7 in a live usb but there also no 1360×768.
      Here is my grub entry I use to boot antiX19.1-sid_x64-core+MATE:

      menuentry "antiX 19.1-sid (Marielle Franco) Frugal Install" {
          search --no-floppy --set=root --fs-uuid c7b4468c-27d0-4ab0-93e0-82c69e1eeec6
          linux /antiX-Frugal-5.5.0-antix.1-amd64-smp/vmlinuz bdir=antiX-Frugal-5.5.0-antix.1-amd64-smp buuid=c7b4468c-27d0-4ab0-93e0-82c69e1eeec6 vga=791 persist_static tz=Asia/Kolkata
          initrd /antiX-Frugal-5.5.0-antix.1-amd64-smp/initrd.gz
      }

      Edit: MATE display setting says ‘Unknown Monitor’ and shows resolutions as xrandr.

        When I choose the frugal device (sda3) it boots into the existing 19.1 (Mariello Franco).

        Are you expecting it to boot to the other new runit install? If this is the case, you will have to change it somehow. Hopefully christophe can explain how to.

        The problem is display resolution is changed to 1024×768 in the existing 19.1. My display is LG19″ VGA with 1360×768 resolution.Now even when I boot through grub entry display remains at 1024×768 on 19.1 which has MATE desktop

        I fear that it may be booting with the same boot parameters (failsafe) as your new runit edition. Inside your 19.1 Mate can you do this?
        cat /proc/cmdline
        and check
        inxi -G

        I don’t know how you are booting to 19.1 Mate, but you may need to change the boot parameters so that there is no failsafe option.

        Anyway, when you have time, take a look at it.

          Thanks for your reply.Here are the details you asked

          demo@antix1:~
          $ cat /proc/cmdline
          BOOT_IMAGE=/antiX-Frugal-5.5.0-antix.1-amd64-smp/vmlinuz bdir=antiX-Frugal-5.5.0-antix.1-amd64-smp buuid=c7b4468c-27d0-4ab0-93e0-82c69e1eeec6 vga=791 persist_static tz=Asia/Kolkata
          demo@antix1:~
          $ inxi -G
          Graphics:
            Device-1: NVIDIA GT218 [GeForce 210] driver: N/A
            Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.8 driver: vesa resolution: 1024x768~N/A

          I think the driver in use was nouveau.

          I don’t know how you are booting to 19.1 Mate, but you may need to change the boot parameters so that there is no failsafe option.

          I have voidlinux installed and Im booting antiX by grub entry.

            Device-1: NVIDIA GT218 [GeForce 210] driver: N/A

            probably nouveau has been blacklisted (if it was running before). Do you remember if you had it running before or if you installed nvidia driver?

                If you install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau and reboot, does the inxi -G change (and also the resolution)?

                  Thanks for your quick reply @Xecure. xserver-xorg-video-nouveau seems already installed.

                  demo@antix1:~
                  $ sudo apt install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

                  xserver-xorg-video-nouveau is already the newest version (1:1.0.16-1).
                  xserver-xorg-video-nouveau set to manually installed.

                    Try adding the boot parameter
                    nouveau.modeset=1
                    just for testing if it now will boot with nouveau driver loaded. I don’t know how this works in frugal, so it may be in the boot menu (hitting ‘e’ key and then F10), or you need to edit some grub file in frugal.

                      1.Added nouveau.modeset=1 to /etc/default/grub in antiX19.1. No success.
                      2.Added nouveau.modeset=1 to grub entry and updated grub in voidlinux. No success.
                      @Xecure I have a month old snapshot of this 19.1 and I written it to a usb.It runs with correct resolution when boot without selecting frugal option. If I select frugal and boot existing 19.1-frugal problem persists.

                        Can you check if the inxi -G is the same as the one in your current frugal 19.1 ?
                        If it is the same, I have no idea how to help with this. Hopefully someone who has a lot of experience with frugal can help here.

                            Working system:

                            Device-1: NVIDIA GT218 [GeForce 210] driver: nouveau v: kernel
                            Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.8 driver: modesetting
                            unloaded: fbdev,vesa resolution: 1360×768~60Hz

                            Problematic system:

                            Device-1: NVIDIA GT218 [GeForce 210] driver: N/A
                            Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.8 driver: vesa resolution: 1024×768~N/A

                            So, the working system has the device driver (nouveau) working, and the xorg setting of modesetting, while the problematic system has no driver for the graphic card identiied, and the xorg setting of vesa.

                            I will someday have to set up frugal and understand how it sets things up. On live-USB, the boot parameters are in /live/boot-dev/boot/grub/grub.cfg but fruigal must be different.
                            Let me read a bit the FAQ page to see if I can find something there.

                            I noticed one more thing in frugal installed 19.1:In lightdm suspend, restart, shutdown options greyed out.

                            This may help with that:

                            Reason: lightdm is expecting systemd. The fix is easy (for both) edit /etc/pam.d/lightdm-greeter with your preferred text editor (root privileges). Change
                            session optional pam_systemd.so
                            to
                            session optional pam_elogind.so

                            Then reboot.
                            If it still doesn’t work, you may need to install policykit-1 and/or pm-utils, but hopefully not.

                              The FAQ is not too clear, but in dolphin_oracle’s video
                              https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZGTBUW3bnA&feature=youtu.be&t=365

                              You could maybe edit some file in the /boot folder you can see on screen, or the grub.entry dolphin_oracle uses in this video.
                              The option nouveau.modeset=1 should load nouveau even if it is blacklisted, so adding it as a boot option should fix your problem (or so I believe).

                              You could also wait for a frugal expert to pop up and explain the correct way to do things.
