I have three T420 Thinkpads which have a problem with low sound playback (and microphone as well) volume in AntiX17. MX 17 has no problem with the sound on these same laptops . MX has Pulseaudio and Alsa (at 153%)
T420 is notorious for low volume.
With Pulseaudio installed from the Package Installer in AntiX, [Xfce or IceWM] all the settings are maxed to 153%, yet the actual sound remains the same low volume. The settings between MX17 and AntiX17 are the same.
Looked online for a solution, looked through many configuration files – nothing appeared to be awry.
Is there anything that can be changed to correct this?
Thank you.

::a couple of things.
have you maxed out the channels in alsamixer (pcm, speakers,whatever…)
if all else fails, in alsamixer we should have a preamp channel that will provide a boost to your audio. move it small increments, its small but mighty and distortion can set in if you move it too far. I would set your master volume to about 75% as a good baseline for volume.
Those older thinkpads have a mono speaker as well. I’ve got a T420 and it does have lousy audio. My T530 is much better.

::On my IBM T 430. I have buttons on the top L/H side of keyboard that work raising and lowering the sound also on this laptop.
I have PulseAdio also installed . Which makes alsa mixer D.O. give only one master volume slider. Since pauv control handles volume settings. Since the OP mentioned he is at 153% already on settings. All I can think of is key combo laptop default settings that are supplied by the hardware outside of the operating system.
22 Volume control buttons The built-in volume buttons enable you to quickly adjust the volume or mute the sound from your computer.

Ah yes, but alsamxixer simply treats pulseaudio as another sound card, so if you use the alsamixer “Select Sound Card” feature, you can still get to the old channels. And sometimes they are still set low. and the preamp will be there if need be.
also, on the T420, the master may point to the wrong channel, for instance Master_Surround instead of Master_Mono, PCM, or Speakers. so those are ares to explore. I tend to set all the alsamixer main outputs to max and then adjust with just the master channel. Of course, you don’t want to max out your microphone/input channels…that can be bad for your hardware.

Thanks Bro. I learn something new today. I saw the single control and let things be. Not thinking of selecting F6 to see what happens.

::I have attached screenshots and cannot find anything relating to “preamp”. Also looked on another AntiX17 computer that does not have Pulseaudio installed and could not find it there either. All my T420s are dual-booted with MX17 and AntiX17. Settings are pretty much the same except for the F6 screenshot where I raised the speaker volume in AntiX17 [to see if it would help -MM is supposed to mean mute anyway] – in MX17 that setting is at default -00/MM.
Included is a shot of MX17 F6 which has one other difference – an extra setting “beep”. MX17 has great audio and settings are all default. All other screenshots are AntiX.
“beep” option does not seem to be in AntiX F6 by default.
The “speaker-test” in the Multimedia menu responds with good volume.
Good tip regarding those hardware buttons – A long time ago spent a lot of time trying to figure out why the audio was so low on a T60 — did not know at the time to look there…
Thank you both for your assistance with this.

::Turn up the speaker slider in your last screenshot. I think pre-amp is the pcm slider, maybe? Beep is muted since you mentioned it. Hit the m key while there to unmute it if you wish.

::Thanks – this I had tried. However, the MM does not change and I think that means “mute”. How would I get zeros in there?

::Thanks – changed it to 00s – no change in the volume – went to 153% – once past 100%, there is no change in the volume in “output devices” and “playback”. Good to know how to change the MMs.

::an extra setting “beep”
misleading because, yes, the beep command (provided by same-named debian package “beep”) is not pre-installed.
FWIW, I _like_ beep (and use it to play musical notifications/alerts) but hey, it’s easily installed so its initial absence is no biggie, eh.February 21, 2018 at 9:25 pm #6825Forum Admin

::I am not sure on the pulse audio thing… does it not need to be added to the desktop startup to be effective?

::Found the problem, maybe.
Pulseaudio is noted to be blacklisted by an application that I use which defaults to Alsa only.
Without it, the volume is perfect. Never had this issue with Pulseaudio and the app before, so never suspected it.
Since the release of the news regarding Specter and Meltdown, and reports of complications with kernel installs, I have Firejail setup to open immediately in MX17 and now in AntiX. Apparently it needs to not blacklist Pulseaudio. So Firejail will only access Alsa.
Would never have suspected Firejail was the issue because there is not a low/no volume problem in MX17 which also has Pulseaudio.
The only reason I discovered this was, yesterday, on a laptop freshly installed with X86 AntiX, set up with Firejail, the same way, there was no audio at all in Mozilla, yet in Chromium, there was audio. I use Chrome and Chromium, but to watch Netflix, need Firefox in 32bit. The Netflix page had a dialogue box that said it needs Pulseaudio, so I installed it. Now at least the video played, just with no sound. Both ran normally with sound outside of Firejail.
Searched the internet and saw a small note connecting Pulseaudio being blacklisted by Firejail. Could not find any files relating to this. And why would youtube videos x86 run Firejailed in Chrome, but not in Firefox- maybe FF uses different audio in 32bit?
In x64, both run in Firejail, just low volume. Both run perfectly outside of Firejail.
I have been researching how to fix this and have tried quite a few suggestions to no avail.
I want to continue to use Firejail but cannot find files to edit regarding blacklisting.
Any idea of where they would be located? Or if this is even where the problem might be?
