      I have a Dell XPS 9360 running Antix 23 (Arditi del Popolo), and for the most part all working fine. But I have a problem with Wi-Fi connection to my local network. I noticed it because of running Synergy, which had quite bad lag on moving the mouse. Running ping from laptop to my desktop machine, I see this pattern repeating over and over:

      Over a few seconds, the response time slowly rises before falling back to sub ms. On a wired connection, it is very stable at between 0.5ms and 1.5ms. I see the same pattern no matter which end is sending the pings.

      I’ve also noticed that if I connect the Wi-Fi first, and then plug the Ethernet cable in, I still get the same ramping lag until I actually turn off the laptop radio. I’m not sure why it’s continuing to use the Wi-Fi rather than switching to the wired connection. I have the metrics set in the route table like this:

      The Wi-Fi is from a Netgear R8000 running Fresh Tomato, and I’m unsure how to work out which side is the problem. Is there anything I can try on the laptop to help resolve this?

              And, booting an arch linux live USB and connecting to the same Wi-Fi, I get consistent stable ping at 3ms–5ms. So hopefully this is something in the laptop config that can be fixed / updated.

                Doesn’t arch use 6.5 kernel? Maybe you can try a Liqourix or one of the newer kernels in antix package manager?

                  I installed 6.5.0-0.deb12.4-amd64 via cli-aptiX, and still see the same behaviour unfortunately.

                  The Arch live USB is running 6.7.6-arch1-2, but I didn’t see anything higher than 6.5 in cli-aptiX.

                  There are also messages in the output of dmesg; on one boot, I got no Wi-Fi at all, with this:

                      Thanks—I managed to get 6.7.8 from liquorix installed, and _still_ see the problem. I guess it’s not specifically kernel version :(.

                      I’m away travelling for a week now, so will come back for another go when I’m back. Maybe someone else might have an idea on what / how to find the source… I will also try a full Arch install on a stick, and see if that is different from the live USB.

                          Well, that was a bit of a rabbit hole. I wondered whether to try to switch to NetworkManager, only to discover that it is actually installed, but just wasn’t starting on boot (hence, after first installing Antix, I couldn’t see the network, wifi or wired, without manually configuring). So I’d just installed connman & system tray to get a graphical interface for finding & connecting to wifi, etc.

                          But, I noticed that if I reboot then switch to a plain tty, log in as root, and ping over wifi, the times were nice and constantly low. The moment I logged in via the graphical interface, the ping spikes would begin. So perhaps it was cmst that was causing the problems all along.

                          I can sudo NetworkManager after login, and all is well, so I will switch to nm instead I think.
