I tried different options in Other Desktop menu item; After I entered herbstluftwm I could not exit into the normal Antix screen even after reboot. After reboot I was left with either the same program or empty screen without menu after I ‘quit’ herbstluftwm. Finally, I accessed the terminal in herbstluftwm and removed it. Now I cannot login into Antix. I have MX on a different partition and see the Antix is still there… Is there a way to restore Antix as it was and access it? I assume I may use GRUB2 or similar but I expect to get into (at best) the same herbstluftwm conundrum. Any suggestions? Thanks.
P.S. ice desktop was not in the Desktop menu from scratch, but Fluxbox seemed to work well.

::lol This post made me smile to say the least. You killed Herbi noooo.
If you have never used a Window Manager type environment especially herbstluftwm before it is easy to enter no mans land. (Mod4 = windows key) Mod4+Shift+q quit
/home/YOU/.config/herbstluftwm/ there is a help.txt file that has the key binds for herbstluftwm. This should be an auto start.
Also you can change the desktop you wish to use from the logon screen with F1 key fluxbox , icewm , etc.
(I just install antiX-19 runit myself and haven’t stopped using it.) Just wish they had a bullseye version. sid is just out bit too out their for me.

Your answer to herbstluftwm was a bit too agresive. You could also have loged out from it (Super+Shift+q) and loged in to a different window manager. Then you could decide if you really wanted to kill herbstluftwm.
Your problem is not with grub, but with Slim loging you in to a non existent herbstluftwm.
When the login manager appears again (when normalbooting to antix) Hit the F1 key to change the session to a different session before loging in.
Asuming you only uninstalled herbstluftwm and nothing else, SLIM display manager should come up and give you the option to log in. If this doesn’t happen, let us know and we will try to guide you to fixing the antiX session.P.S. ice desktop was not in the Desktop menu from scratch, but Fluxbox seemed to work well.
Once you return to your normal antiX session, do this in terminal:
sudo apt install --reinstall desktop-session-antix- This reply was modified 2 years, 9 months ago by Xecure.

::Thank you for your prompt responses. I was surprised that choosing this herb thing could mess up the desktop so much. Super+Shift+q quits but does not change the manager. I did as you advised. I was able to boot into Antix from SuperGrub2 and Fn/F1 allowed me to switch to a normal manager. I was still not able to boot into Antix from HD, but I booted from MX on the same HD and MX Tools allowed me to repair bootloader. Now it is back to what it was. I am not sure this herba thing should be in the menu. I don’t think an average user needs this, and advanced users can probably install it as needed.
On the somewhat related note, samba configurator in the menu does not work and pops up on every login now. I wonder if and how I could remove it but I am hesitant to mess up the system again :). I configured smb.conf file directly and it’s fine. I suspect that menu configurator is deprecated… Thanks again for the F1 tip and the sesion command.July 13, 2020 at 5:08 pm #38820Forum Admin

Next time.
man herbstluftwmwill give you all kinds of info . Before clicking on something you have no clue about but like the cool sounding name.
herbstluftwm is anti’s preferred window manager. He built the iso. herbstluftwm is teeny tiny small. If it is less hassle leaving it in than out for him.
I am fine and dandy with that.In Tx. It is bad manners to look a gift horse in the mouth.

::Yes, I explored this menu when I got into herba first time. It obviously has its functionality, and I am not claiming that it should not be used or/and developed. Whether to have it in the menu or not is a question of what the OS intended for and for whom; it’s not always easy to decide… I suppose feedback helps to maintain the horse; sometimes more, sometimes less… but it’s up to the owner :).

I now see why there was no help file on my screen as I have a 27″ monitor on T430 with the laptop closed on a docking station.

herbstluftwm was the first windows manager I ever used and don’t worry I have been there too quiet a few year ago now.Today i3wm is my daily driver I also use spectrwm and bspwm (I would not use a GUI desktop if you payed me.)
The best things I like about antiX. Fast , non tied to any one desktop , low on resources , work awesome on older computers.

::Thanks for the response, again. I think Antix may be # 1 on the Distrowatch list. It’s portable with easy persistence setup, light on resources and has a good bunch of default applications. I also like command style, logic-based operations. For example, I liked to teach C much more than JAVA. Structured logic of C was easier and more enjoyable that clumsiness of endless JAVA libraries.
Having said that, Antix seems to be targeting a wide audience of general users, including beginners. This (accessibility) is one point of making a distro on the top of Debian. To appeal to the wide audience, GUI is a must. In a more technical sense, herbi is different from other managers (iceWm etc.) listed in the Other Desktop menu. Therefore, it would be more logical to place it among Accessories or to let users install it as needed. This is just a suggestion not intended to offend herbi creators or Antix developers.
Perhaps, my live USB ISO was defective. It did not have iceWM in the Dektop menu. After I removed herbi from the HD installation and ran apt install — reinstall desktop-session-antix, the menu was repaired and I got working iceWM entry. However, on the USB the last command did not change anything (bad iceWm). This leaves me with an option that removing herbi on HD fixed the problem. Don’t ask me how :). I wonder if others had a similar issue.

::I can’t see how removing herbstluftwm would damage iceWM but that does depend on how you removed herbstluftwm. To me I would not even worry about it now you can always make a new live usb but if have set up your system just backup of your home folder and use your config files from your backup.
In saying that I don’t like GUI is just a personal thing, as I have been using a WM for so long I find using GUI desktop is hard to handle and messy I’m not saying that it is for everyone. 95% of users would be GUI.
Don’t agree with taking herbstluftwm out of the install it just an antiX thing and the help.txt is auto starting if you want to logout reading it helps.

So, I’m just wondering why you only give antiX a score of 4/10 in the Distrowatch reviews?

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.
