Rather experienced Linux user here: RHEL 6 & 7, Oracle EL, Ubuntu Server, and Kubuntu.

I joined because a friend of mine has an older system, combined monitor and system, that I need to update and 32-bit isn’t available for my usual distros anymore.

Basically, I’ll get her up and running with antiX. I’ve already played around with an install that mimics her specs via VirtualBox. Questions:

1.) Has anyone run TeamViewer on their antiX setup? I’ve already installed it on the VM and the test connection seemed to take way longer than normal.
2.) Should I install KDE or leave things as is?

      Best,

      James

Hi James, welcome to the forum.

I would keep things as-is, regarding KDE or not. For 32-bit, the setup will be much snappier as-is.
        (But it is doable.)

          Sounds good.

She’ll probably be surprised by its speed then!

            Welcome JWKrych.

antiX is set up very nicely with several desktops. I would not suggest adding KDE. If you decide you want KDE I would look into using Q4OS instead. That distro focuses on both Plasma and Trinity versions of KDE and supports 32-bit. It also runs very well on old equipment. Nothing runs as good as antiX on old computers though.

What are the specs of the machine?

              Hello JWKrych,

Welcome to antiX Linux and the forum.

I don’t know how to write in English and I send my texts translated by the internet translator. I hope you can understand everything, if your native language is not English, please translate my original Brazilian Portuguese text directly into your language with the help of internet translators.

Regardless of your level of knowledge about GNU/Linux, I recommend you read these excellent tutorials created by @PPC:

Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie and How-to install applications – 2020 version.

Remember to show the person who will be using the computer these tutorials.

KDE is available by default on other GNU/Linux distributions, KDE itself slows down many technologies on this desktop. If the idea is to have the old computer (you haven’t specified the computer in question yet) working in acceptable condition, it makes no sense to install KDE on this computer with antiX as its operating system. But, nothing prevents you from installing KDE. antiX has window manager and file manager combinations that suit many tastes and many different computer configurations.

Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie e How-to install applications – 2020 version.

1.) Has anyone run TeamViewer on their antiX setup?

I used it all the time, about 1 year ago or so, in antiX 19.X, with no problems at all

2.) Should I install KDE or leave things as is?

Well, you can install KDE, but antiX runs this fast because every single detail is configured to run light and fast. Using a heavy D.E. in 32bits may slow antix to a crawl.
If you want a different look, even quite similar to KDE’s, you can install (and then use Menu > Preferences) the ft10-transformation package – you see how it looks like over at FT10’s thread.

                P.

It’s an older Dell all-in-one. I last messed with it in 2013. I believe it has 2 GB of memory and two cores.

Okay, so that no one is left hanging…

The model was a Dell Inspiron One. Well, while getting it ready, the power supply, which also had its grounding prong removed, shorted and everything became data recovery.

That mostly went well except for four!!! files in a folder with pictures that caused all sorts of problems. Long story short, I got everything that was needed.

I really appreciated the help here.

                    Very respectfully,

                    James

Well, glad you got everything that was needed.

But, it’s always sad when a computer dies. 😉
