It looks like this iMac might be one of those with the gpu/cpu cooling compromise?
I ran inxi -Fxxxrz a few minutes later and the temperature had increased from 57C to 63C
Was there some detail about to handle a hot running iMac?

            • This reply was modified 11 months, 3 weeks ago by Articules. Reason: added gpu ambiguity (in my mind) whether it is a cpu/gpu thing

Some roughly estimated timings running on a physical device rather than a virtual one.
              All timings in seconds
              14 welcome to GRUB!
17 splash screen with install options
22 echo of install happenings (seems based on timeout timings at 5 seconds?)
              61 login user/password screen
              66 desktop settles down
In its previous lives this computer rarely seemed to match that at all

When I had an Imac 12.2 (from2011) I had not temp issues at all
Instead with older Mac(s), from 2007 and 2008 I had a lot of problems.

You can try macfanctld that is tailormade for Macbook Pro, on that you should fine tune the speed of the fans.
On other Macs I usually use Psensor

                Edit:
As far as GPU temp is concerned, please take into consideration to install the Nvidia driver
