      Greetings all!

After falling in love with MX, I thought I’d give antiX a spin on my ancient 2008 laptop. The laptop struggled to even open a browser page in almost all other distros I’ve tried (& that’s a long list).

With antiX, I’ve managed to turn this old laptop into an audio engineering workstation. And it flies!

Many thanks to the devs for making this amazing OS!

      Cheers x

Hi Stæmpunk! Very cool to hear you’re able to use antiX for audio. I’ve got an even older 64-bit desktop from around 2005 that I’ve tried installing Waveform Free on, and I couldn’t get it working. Audacity and Ardour works fine, but I do like Waveform, so any tips you have on making it work on antiX would be appreciated. Also, I’m still scratching my head over getting Jack to work, so for the time being, I’m still running ALSA. Got a Steinberg UR22 from around 2014 that works fine. It’d be cool if you could make a video on using antiX for audio!

@Stæmpunk: Since you happened to mention that “I’d give antiX a spin on my ancient 2008 laptop”, I happened to be going through my Blog entries from 2008 and found these comments about antiX from 2008:

“If you want fast and flexible, another community MEPIS project is for you – the antiX project. M7.5 is the current release and the motto: “Lean and Mean” certainly applies. you have the choice of either Fluxbox or IceWM as a window manager to use with antiX. In the upcoming M8.0 release, the default window manager is changing from Fluxbox to IceWM to improve initial ease of use. Very early in the testing cycle, antiX M8.0 is, nevertheless, shaping up as a VERY GOOD release.”

                Reference blog post: https://brianmasinick.blogspot.com/2008/11/sidux-antix-and-simplymepis.html

I’m not implying that this software is available or useful today, I’m just going back into the history of antiX and locating a few things I wrote about it in the past in my personal blog. I’ve been a follower and user of MEPIS, antiX, and MX Linux from their beginnings and continue to support and use antiX and MX Linux today. I’m on one of my newer systems, and I’m using MX Linux there now; when I’m on one of my older systems, antiX is my favorite and featured distribution there, and on a couple of them, it’s the only thing I run.

@Stæmpunk: If you feel in love with MX, then you probably will enjoy using antiX with the FT10 transformation pack – If you do, covering it in your YT channel would be a great idea…

The laptop struggled to even open a browser page in almost all other distros

It probably can do even better if you use seamonkey or palemoon browser (they are both available in antiX’s Package Installer)

Since you are into video, probably the best way to use that laptop to view HD video is installing xine media player (it’s the package “xine-ui” available in the repository) – that application seems downright like black magic, running on devices with very few resources…

                  P.
