So what led me here? I have installed on old D600 Latitudes before disposing (Antix 17 I think). But the real reason for moving away from all the other distributions stems from this enlightening web page: https://sysdfree.wordpress.com/2023/03/02/363/
It wasn’t my first choice as I wanted to explore systems that were not only free of systemd but also Pulse Audio, the inventor of both, surprise, surprise is now employed by Microsoft (who are also now getting their foot in the BSD door by offering OpenBSD on their Azure marketplace!). I have tried Venom Linux to no avail when it comes to installing the DE’s other than the default OpenBox it comes with. I thoroughly enjoyed playing with GhostBSD, which I also enjoyed but could not get the Canon TS-8151 to print (something I still need to sort out in Antix, but hopefully the Canon drivers will sort this out. Have tried Cups having already installed Gutenprint, but getting the same issue as I had with GhostBSD – the printer makes an indication it is going to make the test print, gets to 49% in CUPS web page then dies (screenshot attached). Just got rid of pulse and bluez as no bluetooth on this desktop! Thanks for a great experience so far. Enjoyed installing SoftMaker Office 2021 .deb file by just dragging to the terminal following your advice page on installing applications not available in Antix. Great thread.
I should add in respect of the printer, CUPS reports that the user is ‘withheld’ – does this indicate I am not a member of the ‘print group’? I made sure I was in GhostBSD but still had the same issue.Just installed the Canon Linux driver and all working and all good! Yay!

::Well Swarfendor, I am not sure it is the lack? of pulseaudio but since installing antix the other day, I’ve found the audio on my system is superlative to anything previously encountered in any other Linux distro of recent years. Maybe though it’s attributable to more than native pulseaudio or lack thereof – and I’m not sure that pulseaudio isn’t still part of antix is it? but whatever it is the system works so much more fluid in my observations.

::Hello swarfendor437.
Welcome to antiX Linux and the Forum.
I don’t know how to write in English and send my texts translated by the internet translator. I hope you can understand everything. If your native language is not English, please translate my original Portuguese language text in Brazil directly into your language with the help of internet translators that you will get a much better result.
Regardless of your level of knowledge about GNU/Linux, I recommend you read these excellent tutorials created by @PPC:
What is antiX and how to try it out or install it.
Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie.
How-to install applications – 2020 version.
How to: correctly use antiX forum.When I started using Antix, I read the tutorials that the PPC created, these readings spared me a lot of my time and I think it saves the time of any new Antix user. Your time will not be lost with these readings, it will seem to be much easier than you could imagine. You will not waste your time with internet searches or even create new topics, on the contrary, you will earn a lot of time from these readings. I recommend you try the work areas that have “ZZZ” in your name. I usually use the “ZZZ-Icewm” or “ZZZ-JWM” or “ZZZ-Fluxbox” (each of these work areas have their own characteristics and consume more or less resources). ZZZFM will be the default file manager in your desktop, it is very similar to other file managers from other GNU/Linux distributions and Windows XP. To access the other Antix work areas, click the Antix menu (or right -click), desktop, switch between desktops and click on the work area name, instantly to desktop will be loaded.
In the Portuguese language area of this forum, there are several tutorials that may be useful for you . Use an automatic translator from the internet so you can understand the text.
Whenever you need to request technical help or support in this forum, explain in detail what is happening, do not save the words, be thorough when writing, enter the characteristics of your computer, such as the brand and the model. If possible, post the result of the command $ Inxi -zv7 of the terminal, copy and paste here in the message of the topic you create in this forum.
When you start a topic or participate with a post, remember to check the option “Notify Me of Follow-Up Replies via email”, marking this option, you will receive a message in your email box whenever there are answers from topic in question.
The antiX doesn’t come with PulseAudio installed, but you can install it if you want. However, the various tests I did, made the computer slow and the processing levels increased a lot. antiX 22 is the current edition and is free of SystemD and EloginD. It makes no sense for you to use edition 17.

What is antiX and how to try it out or install it.
Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie.
How-to install applications – 2020 version.
How to: correctly use antiX forum.
O antiX 22 é a edição atual e é livre do SystemD e do EloginD. Não faz sentido você utilizar a edição 17.

::Welcome to the forum. Mr S. such long usernames make tired fingers :-).
antiX uses alsa, pulse is a further layer which can be added but still depends on the
base alsa sound system.My personal experience with pulse is muddled muddy gritty sound from a pretty good audio setup.
Card is audigy in a PCI slot, that also makes a big difference to output quality.April 23, 2023 at 5:02 pm #105298Member

::Glad to hear of your success on the cannon printer and welcome to the antiX community.
I wanted to explore systems that were not only free of systemd but also Pulse Audio
I, too, found myself here with a checklist of stuff I strongly disliked. Both systemd and pulse audio were on the check list.
When you have an opportunity, review @marcelocripe links. He works very hard to help new antiX users engage with the community and he is super helpful. Seeing how you have been distro-hopping, most of the basics you may already know so it should be a quick read.
Also, take five minutes to familiarize yourself with inxi. A awesome and very useful utility by @h2 which can by used to redirect (> inxi.txt) to text and attached to posts.
sudo inxi -v7zv = verbosity and z = filter potentially sensitive information

You wrote … “My personal experience with pulse is muddled muddy gritty sound from a pretty good audio setup….”
That indeed matches my experience thus far. Sound sounds much better sans Pulseaudio IMO.April 24, 2023 at 7:22 am #105317Memberswarfendor437
::Thanks for the warm welcome fellow Antix users. I was introduced to GNU/Linux back in 2002 by a young technician at the school where the Integrated Resource where I worked gave me my first taste, Knoppix 2.9 – was blown away. For those who don’t want to type my full name I am known as swarf’ on other forums. I became a big fan of Freespire 1 and 2, community editions of Linspire (Lindows previously). I had to recover a student’s data from floppy on a Dell Latitude D600 – Knoppix failed to pick up either the DVD drive or the external floppy drive used to recover the corrupt floppy data – Freespire picked up everything instantly and was able to recover the student’s work. When Freespire went under following the shenanigans of Michael Robertson I was keen to support a distro that had a similar feel to Windows to get Windows users off Windows, so I discovered ZorinOS which I had been using since iteration 4 dual-booting, up to ZorinOS 15. I’d had a bit of an argument at home and in an upset state had wiped Zorin in error instead of the drive I had intended to install something else. I wrote the unofficial manual for Zorin 12, translating it into Italian, Greek, French, and German. Was going to do Spanish version but a kind member from Argentina did that for me. I had cheated using Google docs, sadly! The last unofficial manual I did was just in English for Zorin 15 Core. Was in start of writing unofficial manual for Zorin Lite when my eldest ended up on Life Support (Lupus) thanks to misdiagnosis. During Lockdown I began using FerenOS as my daily go to, then became aware of Devuan, which I used from Lockdown to my retirement, so 18 months of working from home to reduce vectors of Covid in respect of eldest with Lupus. The only thing I needed Windows for as a VM in virt-manager was to access a shared mailbox in Outlook (work requests sent to all personnel who were involved in transcribing documents into Large Print and Braille) and Braille Blaster Braille Translation program that worked in FerenOS but not in Devuan, so had to use the Windows version after migrating from FerenOS. All that is behind me now but I still give advice on the Sensory Impairment Forum and advise on where to source books from that need transcribing. My current issue with Antix is to do with fsck. I get a C12 error for /home (sda6) and also receive advice that e2fsck needs updating, so that is my only issue. I too have an Audigy RX 7.1 Surround Card (but only have a 5.1 Logitech Sound System!).

::Hi swarf :-),
No idea which antiX version you are running.
Wordfence is a total pain in the rear. Temporarily banned me from logging in a couple of days ago.regarding fsck, suggest using the antiX 23 beta live from USB stick, that gives latest available
debian version of e2fsprogs. Testing and Sid both have vers. 1.47.0-2As that is a system tool installing testing package to Bullseye or older might cause trouble.

::Testing to see if Wordfence permits attaching the inxi results if using “.txt”
—
@swarfendor437, Wordfence permits attaching if you append .txt to the file. Yeah, I know, not great security, but Wordfence is better than nothing. The forum has been attacked many times. Necessary evil considering the cms platform.

::Hi swarfendor437, what triggers the forum software blocking your inxi output is the word data followed by colon.Don’t ask me…
This should not be the case if the inxi command is executed without sudo, because then the information about the memory is omitted.

Too funny. I just tried posting using data[COLON] and Wordfence does in fact block the post. How strange is that?!
@caprea, nice catch.
