      Hi, good evening…

Past 3 days i just tried Antix for old laptop. Im pretty much newbie (zero exp for linux). So i am kinda lost here.
So im setting it up for my dad. I am trying to make simple desktop for elder to understand as possible
and light computing work like office and so on.

Please allow me to explain step by step what i already tried to achieve new antix system first from personal perspective
(Windows User) just in case someone need it in the future.

      1. First disable 3 monitoring at the system tray because i feel more distraction factor than function.
I mean we already have conky right?

Menu -> Setting -> Preferences -> Taskbar -> DisableTaskbarShow CPUStatus, MemStatus & netStatus -> Save Modifications.

Idk is that proper way but looking good.

      2. I set zzz-icewm and Theme

      3. In my case Sound not work properly so go to AntiX Control System -> Hardware -> Sound card chooser -> test sound (succeed for me)
-> Adjust Mixer -> Headphone, Speaker, Pcm? to 100 and Pre Amp is 20.

      4. Setup Screen Brightess because i feel too bright. In my case backlight brightess not saving after reboot.
So i go to AntiX Control Panel -> Session -> User Desktop -> add

      ## Brightness Startup
      backlight-brightness -s 50

and save. Took me half day try and error around this issue and credit to username dave for solving it.
After that i make toolbar for backlight brightness

Menu -> Application -> AntiX -> IceWm Toolbar -> Add Icon -> Backlight Brightness
and voila, i can set brightness from Desktop. πŸ˜€

      5. In my case my repo not work properly because ip6 so i need disable ip6 system wide i guess?
Pretty much hard time too for this issue. T_T
      So i follow this instruction : http://linuxhint.com/debian-disable-ipv6-on-interface/
After that repo looks functional at this point. Dont know in the future.

      6. Edit some /etc/sysctl.conf not sure about this one, just found it because disable ip6 issue and
uncomment all additional setting ( maybe can i uncomment all of them? ) assuming its kinda anti netcut
      or something?

      7. Add app shortcut to my desktop
Right click File Manager or AntiX FAQ in my desktop -> new -> Desktop App -> (yourchoiseapp) and thats the shortcut.

      8. Enable double click
Right click File Manager or any shortcut -> Desktop Setting -> untick single click opens file in general and desktop tab.

      ———————————————————————————————————————————
And yeah thats it and im pretty much happy with Antix at this point. But i still have several issue.

      1. Some key not work properly Like escape, some of f key and n key. (i think its hardware issue) And yeah i write this thread without
n key working. And using copy paste trick. (painfull)
Is that possible i can using bluetooth keyboard and mouse keyboard?
I cant open bluetooth manager -_- its kinda not working
(priority issue) already tried click bluetooth manager and bluetooth adapter and nothing happened. Try saw in conman too and nothing.

      2. I have generic bluetooth speaker. Can i using it too?

      3. My touchpad not working too (optional but glad if i can fix it)

      4. I saw Youtube Video Player from multimedia, can i change default resolution to 720p or 480p. I cant see
how to change it. Just in case my dad want explore Antix in the future

      5. Any simple way to install and using DnsCrypt? Just for quad or next dns. Avoid mitm especially my ISP.
But i assume this give me headache, lol.

      6. Any basic security advice for Antix system?

please assist me to solve the issue. Thank you in advance.

On setting up a system for a ex-windows user, you may want to check out FT10 transformation pack (search for it’s thread here in the forum)…

        On your problems:
1- The keyboard, probably is an hardware problem
2- Probably you can setup a bluetooth speaker- install and configure pulseaudio and search for bluetooth here in the forum
        3- Try installing “synaptics”
4- To configure smtube default resolution try this: click the second menu “View”, then “Settings” then you should be staring right at the default youtube video resolution

        P.

        Edit: corrected a typo

          1. Yeah its likely because hardware thats why i ask how to solve bluetooth problem so i can connect with Bluetooth Keyboard And Mouse.

          4. Smtube is different than youtube video Player right?
And for smtube idk why its not working and got hijack by my isp ads. Thats why i ask dnscrypt.
but youtube video player is working

            Hi again

4-Smtube is identified as such in the antiX menu… (Please note If you try out FT10, in the “tiled” menu, it has a Title called simply “Youtube” with youtube’s icon).
I just tested out smtube and it’s working perfectly. If you installed antiX 19.X probably the system is not using “yt-dlp”.
Try installing that package, and then try out smtube.
There are some applications that stream youtube videos, both GUI and in terminal, smtube is just the one that comes, by default, with antiX. It uses a simple web browser to display a webpage that allows access to youtube videos and then opens the selected video using a media player (mpv, by default, if I’m not mistaken) using yt-dlp to download the video and send it to the video player- no adds are displayed.
Just in case you you don’t know how to install a package, try: menu > Terminal
            sudo apt install yt-dlp
Press enter and enter your password if asked to.

antiX comes with an inbuilt ad blocker (to access it, go to menu > Control Center > “Network” tab > Adblock and change it’s settings, and see if your problem with adds is solved.

            P.

/etc/sysctl.conf not sure about this one,

Just remember. antiX is a systemd free distro.

              When in doubt
              sudo updatedb

              locate systemctl

If the above returns nothing. It should return nothing. It means you do not have it.

Any time I see systemd commands in a tutorial. I close that web page.

Im assuming Option that i have for setup default resolution is only for smtube right not for youtube media player. (im in AntiX 21)

This is what i mean youtube media player

but ill take the suggestion to try Antix 19.X and FT10 tho for my homework list

For adblock by host i dont think it resolve my issue because its not only ads im aware of. Because my isp block some forum too.
                But thx for suggestion sir.

Idk for pros cons about systemd, ill dig it about it.

About my primary issue about bluetooth i just thinking about can i install windows driver to linux system if no linux way to solve it? or maybe external bluetooth receiver? IDK i feel lost. πŸ™

You can try solving your bluetooth problem by installing “blueman” from the antix Package Installer. Then run blueman and see if it works with your hardware. This has 2 steps: the bluetooth chip on your computer has be detected and work with antiX, and then your bluetooth devices (keyboard, mouse, column) has to be detected and correctly configured with your computer.
Do not try to install “windows drivers” in Linux. Unless you are sure they are somehow compatible with Linux (antiX, up to version 21 used to have a tool to install Windows wireless drivers in antiX, that was a very particular case).
If you can’t detect your bluetooth card, then you can try a bluetooth usb dongle (they are not very expensive) that is compatible with Linux (they usually say so on the box).

PS: One way to solve your keyboard problem is not using a bluetooth keyboard, but a wireless keyboard (they come with a small usb receiver you plug in a free usb port). the same applies to a wireless mouse. These wireless devices usually are way cheaper that the bluetooth ones (and the battery lasts much more)…

                  P.

Sound logical to me, i think my final attempt is give it try with Antix 19.X and recommended setup.
My dad already have bluetooth keyboard and bluetooth mouse. He usually use it with his Tablet computer. But idk what kind. ill see it next morning.
                    – So my objective is USB dongle (must compatible with linux)
                    – or wireless keyboard and mouse wireless
                    – or back to win 7 (yikes, badsecurity+bloatware)

thanks for the headsup tho, hope you guys are well
ill try comeback to give the feedback. Cheers.

Ps: feel free if anybody want give some additional tips setup for newbie πŸ™‚

/etc/sysctl.conf not sure about this one

? roky misread “systemctl” for “sysctl” ?

                      sudo tail /etc/sysctl.conf
and you’ll find that lines intended to disable IPv6 are preinstalled (but, by default, they are outcommented).
If you edit /etc/sysctl.conf` (AsRoot), remove the leading # character from those 3 lines mentioning IPv6, and save the edited file…
changes will take effect after you reload sysctl (or reboot)

                          1. Some key not work properly
Sometimes with old laptops there is simply dirt, small crumbs under the keys that don’t work.
I cant open bluetooth manager -_- its kinda not working
blueman should be installed by default on antiX21-full and is bluetooth manager.
It might could help to reinstall it.
What happens if you click on “search” in bluetooth manager(aka blueman)Can you see the same as on the screenshot?
To start it from the terminal with
                          blueman-manager
                          might gives hints what’s wrong.

                          2. I have generic bluetooth speaker.
For the bluetooth speaker you need to install pulseaudio, like already mentioned
                          control-centre > programms > package installation > audio
the daemon needs to be started afterwards with
                          pulseaudio -D &

but I guess you first have to manage your problems with bluetooth manager to use the speakers.

Edit: Just seen you are probably using a broadcom-card for bluetooth, there is no mention of a bluetooth adapter in the inxi.
                          The ouput of
                          dmesg | grep bluetooth
                          could be helpful

Edit2: Hopefully, these temperatures do not reflect the truth.

                            Hi again,

After some time read here and there and tried this and that, i think already got answer for my issues.

Installed AntiX-19.5 and i like it. I cant tell why, its kinda stable. i just feel it. I know feel
not scientific way but whatever. And Bluetooth manager worked this time but unfortunately adapter not
found. I decide over dongle tho so enough sudo things today. πŸ˜€
I like the background too, even its simple but kinda has artistic value. nice
For SMTube yup, i like that.

-For Bluetooth problem i tried Wireless mouse and succeed. I tried with cable keyboard too. I didnt know
notebook can use that even with linux. Just plug and worked! Im noob, i know, lol. Just feeling stupid
because using copy paste hundred times before.

For bluetooth dongle cant confirm just yet because device still on the way. But ill mark it as a solved.
if bluetooth keyboard over dongle undetected still got cable keyboard so its ok.

-For Dnscrypt i think its solved too. I read instruction from https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/is-it-possible-to-install-dnscrypt-proxy/#post-63474
but for my case with small modification with connman and personal toml setting. Ill re-edit my main
post after this (But i cant see edit post). Ill just write it in the next post (feel free moderate it).

-For systemd thing i think im gonna stay away from that for this time. Just read some article but they say
controversial. How casual user like me understand that. not IT guy. I just self-taught
without not really people interest about computer around me.
But base from wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Systemd i just bold about systemd is a software suite that provides an array of
system components for Linux[6] operating systems. And Core components and libraries. So i might start from
that. πŸ˜€ (well at least i learn somethin new)

                            @caprea
                            1. its solved but optional good idea too. For AntiX-21 yeah i noticed blueman already instaled, and i believe
i reinstall from Package Installer too. If im not mistaken i got notification to enable bluetooth. both from ok and other
already tried. At some point i notice something on tray but instant killed. Unfortunately uninstall 21 so yeah.
maybe because legacy thing? im pretty sure install uninstall 21 like 4 or 5 times at least 1 with non legacy.
And bluemann not working. But blueman AntiX-19 is worked. But no adapter tho.

                            2. i think ill try over dongle but noted.

                            3. lul, i live at equator and not far from beach not mentioning ring of fire (volcano) stuff. So i cant
expect otherwise without AC. Thanks for noticing tho, i think i still got external cooler. so i got that.

im kinda sleepy rn so ill re-edit my first post when i can. I just cant thinking anymore. Gn and Thankyou.

                              Re-Edit my first post

                              Hi, good evening…

Past 3 days i just tried Antix for old laptop ( Acer Aspire One ).

                              1. I set Desktop -> Other Desktops -> Space-IceWM
And set theme from settings -> themes

                              2. Disable 3 monitoring at the system tray because i feel more distraction factor than function.
I mean we already have conky right?

Menu -> Setting -> Preferences -> Taskbar -> DisableTaskbarShow CPUStatus, MemStatus & netStatus -> Save Modifications.

Idk is that proper way but looking good.

                              3. Control Centre -> Desktop -> Choose Wallpaper -> Change Static to Random wallpaper timed -> Apply -> Close

                              4. In my case Sound not work properly so go to AntiX Control System -> Hardware -> Sound card chooser -> test sound (succeed for me)
-> Adjust Mixer -> Headphone, Speaker, Pcm? to 100 and Pre Amp is 20.

Menu -> Application -> AntiX -> IceWm Toolbar -> Add Icon -> Backlight Brightness
and voila, i can set brightness from Desktop. πŸ˜€

                              6. In my case my repo not work properly because ip6 so i need disable ip6 system wide i guess?
Pretty much hard time too for this issue. T_T
                              So i follow this instruction : http://linuxhint.com/debian-disable-ipv6-on-interface/
After that repo looks functional at this point. Dont know in the future.

                              6. Edit some /etc/sysctl.conf not sure about this one, just found it because disable ip6 issue and
uncomment all additional setting ( maybe can i uncomment all of them? ) assuming its kinda anti netcut
                              or something?

                              7. Setup DnsCrypt by this Instruction https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/is-it-possible-to-install-dnscrypt-proxy/#post-63474
Not sure about point 5. Is this the correct way or not

                              edit dnscrypt-proxy.toml ->
                              – server_names = [‘quad9-dnscrypt-ip4-nofilter-ecs-pri’, ‘quad9-dnscrypt-ip4-nofilter-pri’, ”, ”]
                              – block_ipv6 = true (because im using ip4)
                              save and exit

Ps: Reboot first time it didnt work IDK why, maybe need 2x reboot??

And i try go to menu -> Internet -> Connman UI Setup -> Details Tab -> Configuration -> Nameservers ->
                              127.0.0.1

                              Reboot again and it worked!
And im happy this time. πŸ˜‰

                              8. Add app shortcut to my desktop
Right click File Manager or AntiX FAQ in my desktop -> new -> Desktop App -> (yourchoiseapp) and thats the shortcut.

                              9. Enable double click
Right click File Manager or any shortcut -> Desktop Setting -> untick single click opens file in general and desktop tab.

And yeah thats it and im pretty much happy with Antix at this point. But i still have several issue.
                              ( Solved )

                              1. Some key not work properly Like escape, some of f key and n key. (i think its hardware issue) And yeah i write this thread without
n key working. And using copy paste trick. (painfull)

Thank you for this! Thats been bothering me for a long time. Installed another package to do the same thing but it didnt work because “backlight-brightness” seems to have primacy. A lot of the antix-tools are terminal applications so next time I’ll look into exactly what commands are triggered when running them.
