What is reputed more effective than cotton tee shirt or tea towel is to add a material layer made from a vacuam cleaner bag of HEPA type or stripped out of a HEPA room air cleaner filter. The higher the filtration standard the better but it does get more restrictive so a good seal mask to face is vital.
The suggestion seems pretty sane to me, copper does negate virus so a copper or bronze scrub pad might be worth taking a look at. Putting copper foil on door grips or a piece of copper water pipe over those made of stainless or aluminium might be sensible. Serious publications suggest active time is higher on Stainless and plastics than on copper, silver zinc.
Get a good seal around the nose, not so easy if like mine it has been broken a couple of times. a strip of soft closed cell expansion foam tape and a couple of wire type freezer bag closures works pretty well.If I am needing to go in a crowded place for any reason I will tape mask to cheeks and nose bridge as well as wearing an improvised spit and droplet face shield.
Use any reasonably transparent plastic for that, I stapled one to a baseball cap, looks silly but times are not such that looking cool keeps us out of hospital. or a hearse.
