AntiX 17: I’ve tried a Package Manager search and got no MP4a hits but enough MP4 hits to confuse me.
Tried Package Manager to install XMMS2 – MPEG-4 plug-in and got this:
`W: Download is performed unsandboxed as root as file ‘/root/.synaptic/tmp//tmp_sh’ couldn’t be accessed by user ‘_apt’. – pkgAcquire::Run (13: Permission denied)’.
What did I miss?

::First you go to Control Center / System and choose guided application installer.
There you add missing multimedia codecs, let it install and exit.
Then you change to Synaptic and mark ‘vlc’ for install.
It’ll add all it needs EXCEPT of one package.
See the arrow? Make sure you add it.
Install and have fun.
That way, you should be able to play almost any audio & video file that crosses your path.

::mpv , which is already preinstalled on antiX should play m4a , MP4 audio-files.
W: Download is performed unsandboxed as root as file ‘/root/.synaptic/tmp//tmp_sh’ couldn’t be accessed by user ‘_apt’. – pkgAcquire::Run (13: Permission denied)The message you get is not an error, but a warning. The question about it rarely appears in the forum, but now and then.
skidoo has suggested a solution herehttps://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/bug-in-synaptic/#post-4375

Codecs can also be installed from Control Center

Control Center > Drivers > Install Restricted Codecs
If that is not the issue, please ignore this reply. When I googled “https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/bug-in-synaptic/#post-4375”
Don’t google the antix forum (it is not in google). Simply click the link caprea has provided and it should open the forum post.
Anyway, the answer linked by skidoo that is linked by caprea, is the 7th reply on that page, also by skidoo. If you have trouble finding it, this is what skidoo says:aptitude & synaptic utilize the user _apt to download packages.
This error occurs when _apt lacks write permission for either
/var/cache/apt/archives/partial/ or an existing file /var/cache/apt/archives/partial/whatever_file_name.deb
so it downloaded the file as root.solution:
ensure /var/cache/apt/archives/partial/ and everything below it are writeable for _apt, e.g. by running
sudo chown -Rv _apt:root /var/cache/apt/archives/partial/
sudo chmod -Rv 700 /var/cache/apt/archives/partial/- This reply was modified 3 years, 8 months ago by Xecure. Reason: quoting skidoo's answer

Don’t google for it, it’s a link and should be opened as a link , just click on it, or right-click with mouse and then “open link in new tab”The codec from above is also installable by
control-centre -> driver -> Codecs Installerbut it’s anyway not relevant here because it’s a pure video-codec (mainly for dvd)
OK. Lets make a new start.
Did you try mpv ?
It is installed by default and relatively easy to handle.
It’s in the menu ->applications -> entertainment media -> mpv
You can drag and drop there your audio-files.Or from terminal
mpv /path/to your audio-file
vlc probably plays them too, but mpv is already installed.
Oops, Xecure just beated me answering nearly the same.
