      I found another way. See: https://askubuntu.com/questions/149054/how-to-change-lcd-brightness-from-command-line-or-via-script

      I found out max brightness, then set it lower, then increased it again…

      $ cd /sys/class/backlight
      bobc:/sys/class/backlight
      $ ls -l
      total 0
      lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Sep 12 13:00 intel_backlight -> ../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0/drm/card0/card0-eDP-1/intel_backlight
      bobc:/sys/class/backlight
      $ cd intel_backlight
      bobc:/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight
      $ ls -l
      total 0
      -r--r--r-- 1 root root  4096 Sep 12 13:00 actual_brightness
      -rw-r--r-- 1 root root  4096 Sep 12 13:00 bl_power
      -rw-rw-r-- 1 root video 4096 Sep  1 18:10 brightness
      lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     0 Sep 12 13:00 device -> ../../card0-eDP-1
      -r--r--r-- 1 root root  4096 Sep 12 13:00 max_brightness
      drwxr-xr-x 2 root root     0 Sep 12 13:00 power
      lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     0 Sep 10 12:04 subsystem -> ../../../../../../../class/backlight
      -r--r--r-- 1 root root  4096 Sep 12 13:00 type
      -rw-r--r-- 1 root root  4096 Sep 10 12:04 uevent
      bobc:/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight
      $ cat bl_power
      0
      bobc:/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight
      $ cat brightness
      937
      bobc:/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight
      $ cat max_brightness
      937
      bobc:/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight
      $ echo 400 > brightness
      bobc:/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight
      $ echo 937 > brightness

        @BobC:
        That’s pretty close to what the ‘backlight-brightness’ attempts to do – there is a function ‘find_controller’ that searches in ‘/sys/class/backlight/’.
        A function ‘set_brightness’ then echo’s the value to found controller.

        If the method you described works for you and ‘backlight-brightness’ does not, then the script ‘/usr/local/bin/backlight-brightness’ should be modified/extended to handle your case.
        Unfortunately, there is no author mentioned in it.

        Also, I did a search ‘apt-cache search backlight’ and the output contained:
        brightness-udev (not installed), brightnessctl (not installed), xbacklight (installed, [‘which xbacklight’ points to a] binary in ‘/usr/bin/xbacklight’).
        Calling ‘xbacklight’ results in output
        RANDR Query Version returned error -1
        in my case.

        As usual, there is an exhaustive ArchWiki page on this topic:
        https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Backlight#Xorg:_adjust_perceived_brightness_with_xrandr

          sybok, Yes, I hadn’t investigated it thoroughly. My battery only lasts 9 minutes from full charge now, so I’m looking for any way I can to stretch it a few minutes. I’ll have to look at that code. Thanks for explaining.

            @BobC Ok I’m back and I ran this command per your suggestion:

            xrandr --prop --verbose | grep -A10 " connected" | grep "Brightness"

            It shows that the max brightness is already 100%. I will try the next method you found now from this post: https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/how-do-i-adjust-power-settings/page/2/#post-88666

            Will report back soon.

              Ok @BobC my max brightness was 15625 and it won’t go any higher than that. I tried and it gave me an “invalid argument” error. I don’t know what else to do. All I know is there is something that controls the brightness when on battery alone and when plugged in. I just have to find the right file to edit to make the change I want. There has to be some config file or script that handles this. It doesn’t make sense. When running on battery alone, it brightens up a lot and then when I plug the power adapter in, it goes dim. I have looked on the net for a solution and scoured this forum but no solid answers yet. I do greatly appreciate your help and @sybok ‘s help too. Hopefully we can figure this out or someone else will know what to do. It’s not a real big deal but is annoying. Makes it hard to see what I’m typing unless I get real close to the screen like I am now lol.

                Look at sybok’s comment below, it won’t save any power using that.

                Did you try backlight-brightness?

                It cam be run from the command line as well as the menu

                  @BobC Yes, I already tried that. It’s as high as it will go.

                    Is your BIOS the best one available? If there is a newer one, maybe it got fixed.

                    Search web for other DV1000 with related issue/solution

                    Try booted from USB to see if problem same…

                    Try booted from USB with old style Kernel to see if problem same…

                    As you can see, I’m fishing for wild guesses at this point 🙁

                      Not sure but I will look and see. I’ll try the Live USB to see if there’s any difference. I have to use a CD and my Live USB to do that though lol. Two part system here. Also, I found this after reading that Ubuntu article you posted. The screenshot is below. I think that in this directory lies the setting I’m looking for. Just now sure which one to edit.

                        @BobC I figured it out!!! With the help of the net of course per your suggestion! I searched, “hp dv1000 screen goes dim when plugged in”. I found this answer:
                        “It’s a software setting that’s easy. Brightness is usually controlled via Action center or Fn+F7 or F8 keys, and when the PC should remember each setting separately for when plugged in and when plugged out. So, with the laptop plugged into the wall outlet, adjust brightness as you wish.”

                        So I tried Fn+F7 but that didn’t work. So I tried Fn+F8 and it worked!!! Problem solved!!! Who would have known that it would be something so simple!!! Lol!!! Thanks ya’ll for all of your help!!!

                        By the way, I forgot how to mark topics as Solved. If anyone can mark this as Solved, that would be greatly appreciated!!!
