I’ve always used IceWM as window manager in antiX, now I’m trying to get to know Fluxbox so I’m doing some tests.
I would like to understand how the slit works.
I tried to see if the slit was compiled in Fluxbox, opening the terminal and giving the command:
      fluxbox -i
      Ok, it’s compiled.
Then, to give it a try, I installed two dockapps to use in the slit:
      wmclock and wmcalc
I tried to see if they worked by launching them from the terminal. They work: a small box appears on the desktop.
Then to make sure that the slit, with these two dockapps, appears when Fluxbox opens, I opened the file ~/.fluxbox/startup, and before the line:
      exec /usr/bin/fluxbox
      I added these two lines:

      wmcalc -w &
      wmclock -w &

      Then in the file ~/.fluxbox/slitlist
      I added these two lines:

      wmcalc
      wmclock

Unfortunately if I restart fluxbox the slit doesn’t appear. What am I doing wrong?

        excerpt from fluxbox manpage:

        Slit
Initially you won’t be able to see the slit. It is there (per default configuration),
but it isn’t being used yet, which confuses some people initially. Think of it as
a dock where you can place smaller programs. The SLIT manpage section, below,
goes into detail about the options you have.

Before wading further through the manpage, inspect the slit-related settings specified in your current init file

        cat ~/.fluxbox/init | grep slit

My off-the-cuff guess in response to what you have described:
fluxbox default init file, as-shipped, specifies top-right as the slit location ~~ and, whoops, is being hidden by (obscured by) “the conky”

          Hello Spartak77 and skidoo
Omit the “-w” in the /startup file. (when using a wm dockapp.)
Do Not fill in the /slitlist file, because this is written by fluxbox.

          With
          wmclock &
          wmclock &

in the /startup file, as you have done, the wmclock will show two instances in the slit upon log-in. (example) (I do wmmoonclock!!)
If it is not visible, then we can look into /init for slit qualities. as skidoo suggests.

            Thanks Skidoo and thanks Ile.

I removed the flag “-w” from
wmcalc and wmclock and the slit works.
            I wrote in ~/.fluxbox/startup

            wmcalc &
            wmclock &

            before the line exec/usr/bin/fluxbox

It isn’t essential to write the file ~/.fluxbox/slitlist to get to appear the slit, it only serves to indicate the order of the dockapp sequence. It is overwritten if you write these lines while you are inside fluxbox. However, antiX is handy because it has multiple window managers. I modified this file while I was inside IceWM to ensure that the file was not overwritten. Then I switched to Fluxbox … the slit worked perfectly.

            Thank you guys
