I can see AntiX is one of those distros that is stupidly complicated. Took me a while to even figure out how to post a question. How do you boot to a live desktop? Tried 32-bit core and see a login and password but “root” doesn’t do anything.

::Hi, jocatone.
Core has no “desktop” — it’s for those who don’t want X-windows installed (yet), and want to build their system themselves.
USe “base” or “full.” (Use “full” if you can; that is, if you have a dvd or usb that it will fit onto). It boots straight to the live desktop.
And with that, I think you’ll find it ridiculously easy to use (even “stupidly” easy, one might say). đ

::antix is geared towards a particular type of user of which, @ jacatone, you are probably not. why not use something easier to save yourself some frustrations.

::You need either the base or full ISO in order to have a preinstalled GUI. There are a lot of stupidly complicated things, but this is a case of not reading the instructions.

Hi!
Yes, sometimes, antiX is more complex than other distros (like Ubuntu, Mint, etc.), but do have to be fair: taking a while to figure out how to post a question is a forum user problem, not the Operating System fault.
I’ve been using antiX for about 3 years, and I never, ever heard of a user not being able to “boot to a live desktop”- you choose a version of the distro that simply does not allow that… why not read the web site and download the “regular” Iso?
And never ever, login as “root”- it’s dangerous, unless you know exactly what you are doing- and it seems, from the question that you posted here, that you are not yet an advanced user…
If you like light Operating Systems, but you want something a bit more mainstream and user friendly, try MX-Linux, the regular XFCE ISO (choose 32 or 64 bits)- burn it to a dvd or create a live usb, and it’s certain that you’ll boot the a desktop. If you like to have a even lighter system, log off MX, choose “Fluxbox” on the hamburger menu at the top, and log back in and test the MX Fluxbox desktop- it will save you some system resources, but has a very particular User interface… From the menu, use the Toolbar option to switch to the legacy tint2 toolbar- that will make the system look and act a lot more like mainstream OS…But antiX is a relatively user friendly OS – the current full version offers, right at first glance, everything you need to use your computer- if you have problems setting up the Wi-fi, use the Menu > Control Centre > Network, to launch the wi-fi manager (connaman) and you’r set.
antiX provides GUI’s for nearly everything a user may want to do, like setting up wi-fi netwrorks, updating the system, installing new software…
I hope you stick around…P.

::Sorry for my frustration. Would this distro work on old Pentium 4 WinXP machines or does it require something newer? Thanks.

::Yes. Many people have had good results with antiX on P4 machines.
The modern internet is hard for our older computers to keep up, but there are loads of threads here detailing how people use antiX productively on old equipment.
A note: when you do a search on the forum, only use the search block that is under the “REGISTER” button, where it says “Search Forums,” on the right side of the screen (not the upper right magnifying glass icon).
So, welcome to the forum! I hope you enjoy antiX. đ

::Don’t feel bad. It’s hard to learn a new paradigm. Yes, antiX can be hard at first, at least when compared to some other systems. The first thing you need to learn is that antiX comes in several versions. Make sure you download the appropriate “iso” file for your use case If you want a “desktop” environment out of the box then choose the “FULL” version. The “Core” version does not have a desktop by default. It is console based.
You will find the “Full” version to be much more to your liking. It will probably boot to a nice desktop and find your internet connection automatically. But don’t worry if it doesn’t. There are good graphical user interface tools to help you get online. And there is a “failsafe” boot mode to help get to the desktop on any computer.
Yes, a Pentium 4 will work great. Especially if you have at least 1GB or RAM. I have antiX running on several Pentium 4’s and Pentium III’s, even a few Pentium II’s.
Welcome to antiX.

::Works on my P3 IBM T23 with upgraded 1 gig of ram . The original os was Windows 2000 .
Older machines require a little more tweaking during install. No one wants to support them anymore.
We still do. Maybe not like how you would prefer. But. Beggars can’t be choosey.Every time I read command line is hard this and that.
This high school dropout just moves on.
Can’t relate.I ran command line wallpaper when I was confused. Then another window open for browser search. It is real easy to highlight a word and use right click> search with google. Then I decided I better learn how to improve my internet search skill. I wrote a little how to long ago.
I am not going to post the link. Could be your first lesson on how to search for some answers. Then I decided How to learn to search forums. Learned that also. Pretty much self taught < with a lot of cheering from members here and hand holding >Good luck.

Hello Jacatone, how are you?
Welcome to antiX and this forum.
I’m also new to antiX and on this forum, I don’t know what your level of computer knowledge is …
You may have noticed, that there are good people here and willing to help, that you will not find easily in any Linux distribution, I speak this from experience …
Be patient, if you can install one of the full versions of antiX (antiX-19.2_x64-full.iso or antiX-19.2_386-full.iso) you will have several work areas, there are so many that you will ask yourself “why so many? “, today I know how important it is to have so many work areas available.
If you have time take a look at the topic https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/system-requirements-for-antix-and-other-debians/, it will help to clarify some information about Linux distros that Seaken64 and I put together “about memory consumption / processing”.
About Pentium 4 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentium_4), try to check your processor version if it is not 64 bits, then probably the ISO (antiX-19.2_386-full.iso) will it work on your computer.
You will be amazed by the antiX 19.2 Full.
For that matter, I don’t speak English, so you will receive a text translated by online translators.
