How do you see/mount an external USB Hard Drive?

Hello all – another stupid question probably however having had a search through the forums I cant see an obvious answer here. I have an external 1tb Samsung hard drive that has a complete back up of loads of my files, however when I plug it into my Antix system I cant see it anywhere. Is there a quick and easy way to get it to mount/be visible?

If automount is enabled, then the device should be mounted in /media. Otherwise, the easiest way for me is to open SpaceFM file manager which lists devices on the left.

Im probably missing something really silly here however I am still struggling to see this hard drive. I know its working as it lights up the way it normally would but I cant see it in disks under control centre – unless I am just not recognising it. would the fact that I had been using it on my macbook have anything to do with it? Its a 1tb USB hard drive that is split into two partitions, one for time machine, and the other as just a general storage drive. Any ideas anyone?

IIRC I had this on a fresh intallation of antix17, too.
I had to go to control-centre , disks, automount configure
and click the apply-button.
This I had to do only one time and since then the automount worked, so I’m not sure, but you can try.
You sure already tried different usb-ports.

Caprea and dolphin_oracle each have suggestions that should help, if you understand what they have suggested.

Regarding the file manager, Space FM is a file manager that usually shows the available devices on the left side panel. If you try it, see if it displays anything not previously seen.

The suggestion to configure automount may also help. Having automount configured and the devices connected should allow everything to be seen.

Try each of the suggestions and then restart or reboot the system. With the configuration in place, verify that it is still available when you restart.

Start with either

sudo fdisk -l

or Gparted.

Does the drive show up? If it shows up in gparted as mounted with right click.

cd /media

Hit enter key

ls

Compare folders shown with what fdisk -l or gparted shows. That was how I rolled in the old days. Before AntiX went into automount and I don’t have to think about mounting anymore.

Back in the old days. I used to make my own /media directories/folders like sdb , sdc, sdd and so on. Then use Slitaz mountbox in the antix control control center to mount my usb drives. But. I have no need to do that anymore. Another useful command I used to learn with was

man mount

ID-2: USB /dev/sdb model: USB_Flash_Drive size: 1.0GB

What is that? Pull it out < Unmount properly using unplug device in the taskbar since you are in Icewm > if running and use that usb port instead. To troubleshoot in case the usb port you plugged that “Samsung hard drive ” is not working. I have encountered snafus on my atom netbook. Where changing usb port rectify s mount problems also.

I don’t know where Rocky got the Mac bit from, but if that drive has a Mac file system on it, you may have to install a handler program for it, (HFS?).

Hard for me decipher what gets posted on the internet sometimes. Because face to face gets more details. So I assume things mostly sometimes. From things not said in a post. I find most problems are solved by what the original poster did not say. Because of shyness, lack of knowledge, or embarrassment.

I still have no idea how to get this working side from going out and buying another macbook 🙁 the disk lights up when I connect it through the USB but it just isnt showing up anywhere! I go in to control Centre > disks and try to mount it and it just isnt listed. Nor does it show up in SpaceFM. Surely there must be a way of getting this system to see this disk? Ive been using it for a few years on my macbook (which I have now sold) as a time machine back up but also a separate partition for general storage (its got all my music and pictures on it so I really do want to get at those!)

btw I have just doenloaded and installed anything HFS related!

Ive no idea how its formatted tbh, as I said it was used on my macbook however I had thought I had created two partitions on it – one for the timemachine backup utility and one 750gb partition which was just a general storage drive. Ive tried devmon in terminal and I just get my normal internal hard drive for the PC showing up, cant see the external one
