      Well Hello There!

      I was having a bit of fun messing about with the DE settings in antiX. I just wanted to set the number of workspaces from two to three. Figured it out in pretty short order for Ice-WM and Fluxbox.

      But not with JWM for some reason. I went to the ~/.jwm/preferences file and changed <Desktops count=”2″> to <Desktops count=”3″> but the number of workspaces showing on the task bar seemed fixed at four.

      Is there a different setting I should be looking at instead?

      Thanks!

        For JWM:
        Add

            <Desktops width="2" height="1">
            </Desktops>

        in ~/.jwmrc file after </RootMenu>, then restart jwm

        For ICEWM:

        In ~/.icewm/preferences, line 57:
        WorkspaceNames=" 1 "," 2 "
        Just change like this to have 2 workspaces, save and restart icewm.

          I managed to figure out how to set the number of work spaces for Ice-WM and Fluxbox already.

          I’s JWM I’m having trouble with to set the number of work spaces.

          I can see where it should be set, but it doesn’t seem to work for me for some reason.I can’t seem to set to three work spaces

          I looked through JWM Guide site and I thought changing the Desktop Count statement in that XML file would do the trick.

          This is what I found in ~/.jwm/preferences:

          <!-- Virtual Desktops -->
          <!-- Desktop tags can be contained within Desktops for desktop names. -->
          <Desktops count="2">
          <Desktops height="1" width="2">
             <!-- Default background. Note that a Background tag can be contained within a Desktop tag to give a specific background for that desktop. -->
          </Desktops>

          I thought changing to <Desktops count=”2″> to <Desktops count=”3″> would do the trick, but no such luck! Then I noticed there were four workspaces in the taskbar, even though the desktops count said 2. Or 3. I tried fiddling with the Desktops height field too, but that didn’t do anything either.

          It’s not a big deal if I can’t set the number of virtual desktops to something I would prefer in JWM. It seems to be working just fine otherwise. It’s just a personal preference sort of thing, that’s all.

          Thanks again!

            Did you logout and login again (doing so might be necessary)

              Here in ~/.jwm/preferences

              <!-- Virtual Desktops -->

              <Desktops height="1" width="3">

              </Desktops>

              for three workspaces. Changing the width changes the count.

                I figured it out! Whoo-hoo!

                First thing I did was follow skidoo’s JWM Link

                So, then I figured the key is the width=”[number]” part.
                So, I changed that to 3. Still no luck.

                Then, with a bit of trial and error (mostly error, of course), I made this change, commenting out a dubious line:

                <!-- Virtual Desktops -->
                <!-- Desktop tags can be contained within Desktops for desktop names. -->
                <!-- <Desktops count="3"> -->
                <Desktops height="1" width="3">
                   <!-- Default background. Note that a Background tag can be contained within a Desktop tag to give a specific background for that desktop. -->
                </Desktops>

                I didn’t see the word ‘count’ used in the Desktops statement.
                So, I commented that out, restarted JWM and, voila, it worked!

                So getting rid of the <Desktops count=”3″> did the trick! Not sure why that line is in there, but that was the problem. As long as that line is there, the height and width values are set to their defaults of 1 and 4 respectively.

                So, anyway, if anyone else wants to set set the number of desktops in JWM, you have to nix that <Desktops count=”3″> line.

                Hope someone else finds it useful.

                  I added:

                      <Desktops width="2" height="1">
                      </Desktops>

                  in ~/.jwmrc file after </RootMenu>, then restart jwm

                    for three workspaces. Changing the width changes the count.

                    Hi, caprea.

                    I figured it out just before you posted in reply. I did do as you suggested, but I noticed that there was that one erroneous line in ~/.jwm/preferences that ought not be there that was the problem. Got rid of that, and the desktops settings are as they should be.
