      Hello.
Can not use alternative app to open word (.doc) files in “Pale moon” Browser

I have Libre office and Free Office installed in my AntiX (last version)

In pale Moon browser “Free Office’ set as default app for any Word Files.
It happened because Free Office was Installed the last.
libre office is not show as an option to open DOC files.
I would like to have option to choose between those two.

I was truing to open DOC files by adding it manually to the option menu in Pale Moon
by pointing shortcut of Libre Office in:
      usr/share/applications

but it doesn’t start the program at all.

I was trying to search, but can not even formulate the question properly.

      ===============
Basically I don’t know how to point the application correctly to “open with”, so Pale Moon actually run the program I have pointed.

        Changing setting in

        /home/yourname/.config/mimeapps.list

        Should fix your problem

Sorry for not answering for such long time.

I am completely new to Linux.

I there any way you can be more specific in details.
          I have find the file.
          What exactly to add there?

          There are two paragraphs:
          [Added Associations]
          [Default Applications]

As I understand I need to add something to [Added Associations]
Should I duplicate ALL FreeOffice lines and add LibreOffice addresses instead?
So in the menu I will get BOTH Free and Libre Offices…

          UPD
          Tried… Doesn’t work this way…

          UPD 2
          SOLVED:
          I went to
          /usr/bin/libreoffice
and have chosen LIBREOFFICE from there.

If I am not mistaken, SpaceFM lets you set up default application for different files (by right clicking, open with, choose an app and mark it as default) and that should also change the mimeapps.list
You could do it this way for future file types and see fi it works.

Hi jc120, maybe you figured things already, this time more info as may be of help for other new users as well.
If you are able use the method given by xsecure, it does not work on our browsers, I think due hardening.
In any case it is always useful to get to know the background . (dot in front of name =hidden textfiles
which control and customize your desktop..

/home/YourUserName/.config/mimeapps.list This is an Example file. I recommend to save a backup before editing on a used system. Just open in editor of choice and add -bak to save as. That way you can always revert
              to the original settings.

              x-scheme-handler/about=firefox-esr.desktop
              x-scheme-handler/unknown=firefox-esr.desktop

To make this more complete, this way changes user settings only.
To change system settings you would need to edit /etc/mime.types as root.

I was wrong then. Sorry about that. I haven’t really tested this on browsers, and only knew about SpaceFM modifying mimeapps, but these changes do not wor for browsers.
I have only changed things through commands or using the Alternatives Configurator, but never tested it on the browser. I normally download and open from the Download folder, and never usually “open” instead of downloading.

                Thanks for your explanations, Moddit.

Hi Xecure, I did not claim you are wrong, we have a user.js on both Palemoon and Firefox, the one on Palemoon is
together with No Script intended to get users to download and open from the Download folder, and never just “open”
files which is the same as you do. Maybe a freshly installed Browser will be different.
We also generally just use Rox RoxTerm Bash with Icewm, I am not familiar with SpaceFM.
Working with config files, either with commands, Alternatives Configurator or text editor works on all desktops, all Linux distros which came my way, Rooted Android as well as BSD and with any application.
I tend to encourage exploring any, better all of those possibility’s, often the incentive is a GUI method failing or leading to unexpected results.

May I return thanks, we work together and get problems fixed, just wish the rest of the world could do the same.

Yes, you are right. We all work together and try to help solve a problem based on our own experience. As you say, the best solutions will come from exploring. There is always so much to learn!

                    Cheers.
