I’m new to linux. I’ve got an external HDMI monitor connected to my HDMI port, but it’s dead in arandr. (it’s switched on!) How do I access it please??

xrandr –auto doesn’t do anything and xrandr –query says

VGA-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

      Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1366 x 768, maximum 8192 x 8192
LVDS-1 connected primary 1366×768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

      Many thanks
      Andy

HiAndy* not dead in xrandr, disconnected, means the hdmi port is inactive.

xrandr --query output was HDMI-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
        Please try
xrandr --output HDMI-1 The external monitor should be connected when you boot.

You will probably have to unmute sound to HDMI in alsamixer and set a reasonable level.
use left and right arrow to move between channels or devices, M key will toggle mute unmute.
Please be careful with pre amo level, set it low, about 18 at first, you can go higher later.

Have no device details, some need BIOS settings or have specific keys to switch output to external.

Should you have no handbook a search for device name then manual should be successful.
Whenever possible I have a copy of user manual and service manual kept localy.

Hi @moddit, this alas doesn’t work. Any further ideas please? I’m searching “dual monitor debian” and things like that but so far there’s not much and it’s way over my head.

Connect and turn the HDMI monitor before you boot.

After you boot use Arandr to make it active.

Try Forum >> Search with HDMI randr to see previous threads

            look at this one: https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/monitor-display-configuration/

BTW, when you make it active, you might also need to rearrange the layout, etc. Once you have it all the way you want it, you need to save the layout to ~/.screenlayout/default.sh

According to the inxi output this is a hybrid graphic laptop.I don’t have any experience with hybrid graphic, i hope BobC has.
Are both cards enabled in the Bios? Might the Hdmi port belongs to the nvidia card.

Yes, 3 of my laptops have optimus/intel/nvidia video with HDMI, and I sometimes hook a 44″ screen to the laptop via HDMI. The others are all normal video, but some have HDMI as well.

The issue I mentioned above was the problem I was having.

                    @caprea,here is xrandr –listproviders
                    Providers: number : 1
Provider 0: id: 0x45 cap: 0xf, Source Output, Sink Output, Source Offload, Sink Offload crtcs: 2 outputs: 4 associated providers: 0 name:modesetting

                    dmidecode is attached.

I looked inside the BIOS and I couldn’t see anything relevant. There is one reference to VGA, no other reference to graphics or graphics cards, no reference to HDMI, and everything is enabled.

Did you look at my suggestion above?

Did you make sure the HDMI cable and screen were connected and on before booting? If not, do that.

Then run and post the results froma terminal when you of run:
                      xrandr
